EA-SX Manual / English
1. Introduction
Dear customer,
Thank you for choosing the ADAM Audio External Amplifier Unit.
The ADAM External Amplifier Unit EA-SX has been designed for driving the following
studio monitor models externally in order to be able to flush mount these monitors into
the control room wall: S2X, S3X-H, S3X-V, S4X-H, S4X-V, S5X-H, S5X-V.
The 19“ / 3U rack unit contains the same electronic circuitry together with the
comprehensive control setting options of the amplifiers that can be found in all SX
monitors listed above.
This manual is intended to provide you with information about the External Amp Unit and
the SX monitors you are driving with it. It contains important information regarding
safety, setting up, handling, and warranty. We request that you read these sections
carefully to ensure easy set up and prevent potential problems.
If you have any questions about this or any of our products, please don’t hesitate to

2.1 Important Information for set up
We recommend using high quality XLR cables to guarantee optimal performance.
We recommend that you retain the original packaging, as it is the best way to
guarantee safe transportation should the need to do so arise.
Please note that with the use of the EA-SX external amp unit the option to retrofit
the SX monitors with the ADAM DA-SX 24 bit/192 kHz D/A converter will not be
available anymore.
2.2 Connecting the external amp unit to the monitors
a) Before connecting the loudspeakers to the 19” external amp unit make sure that
your audio source is switched off.
b) Connect each monitor to one EA-SX amp unit by using one Speakon cable. You
can order cables in either 5 or 10 meter lengths from ADAM Audio.
Please note that in order to connect the monitors to the external amp unit you must
use the ADAM Audio ready-made Speakon cables.
Attention owners of the S5X-H!
You will find two Speakon jacks on each monitor that have to be connected to
one EA-SX amp unit per monitor. Please make sure you do not cross the two
cables while connecting them to the external amp unit. The respective Speakon
jacks on both the monitors and the external amp unit are labelled with Speakon 1
and Speakon 2 and have to be connected correspondingly.
c) Connect your mixing desk/DAW to one EA-SX per monitor channel using the XLR
connector on the back panel of the external amp unit.
d) Check if the specified voltage matches the voltage of the power supply you use. If
this is not the case do not connect the EA-SX to a power source! Please contact
your local dealer or national distributor.
If the voltages match, use the included power cables to connect the EA-SX to the
AC socket.
e) Power on the external amp unit at the back panel first and then at the front
(Standby switch).
f) Turn on your audio source and adjust the volume carefully.
2. Quick Start

EA-SX Manual / English
3.1 General recommendations
Please make sure that there are no obstacles in the way from the monitor to your ears.
You should be able to see the speakers completely.
The loudspeakers should be aligned with the listener’s position.
Please note that vibrating parts of nearby objects can mask the sound.
Mechanical adjustments: If you plan to modify the speaker cabinet (e.g. drilling
holes), please contact us before doing so. Usually, we will handle your warranty
obliging.
3.2 Flush mounting the monitors
Should you consider to flush mount your monitors, this would bring some acoustical
benefits. Cabinet edge diffraction and also low frequency reflections that would
normally occur from the wall behind the speaker can be avoided that way. The result is
an improved mid and low frequency response.
Regarding the orientation of the monitors please make sure the acoustical axis of each
monitor points directly to the listening position. In larger control rooms the monitors
should be angled in the vertical plane so that the acoustic axis meets in the middle of
the standing and seated listening position. In the horizontal plane the monitors should
be placed according to the standard stereophonic (60° between L/R channels) or
multichannel (ITU-R BS.775-1) setup recommendations.
For further information on installation we recommend contacting an acoustics
specialist or a professional recording studio design/construction company.

4.1 The front control panel
On the front of the amp unit you will find a control panel that allows detailed
fine-tuning of your loudspeakers to your particular room acoustics and personal
listening preferences. The following tips are intended to assist you at using the
controls in the best manner.
Please note that using the controls may have a great impact on the overall sound
characteristics of your loudspeakers. We recommend using the controls with
utmost care and only after several audio tests with familiar recordings.
4.2 Standby switch and LEDs
While the main power switch can be found on the rear of
the external amp unit, there is also a switch for power on/
standby on the front panel. In standby mode, the switch glows
orange, in power on mode it glows green.
To the right of the standby switch you can find
two LEDs:
• In case of an overload, the OL LED will flash red. The protective circuit will safe
your speaker from damage.
• The D/A LED on the EA-SX is without function as the D/A converter option is not
available with the use of the external amp unit.
4. Speaker Adjustment

4.3 Input Controls
There are two different controls to regulate the overall input
sensitivity:
• One control allows for coarse settings from -20dB to +8dB. The
control works in 4dB steps.
• The other control is intended for fine tuning in 0.5dB steps,
ranging from -1.5dB to 2dB.
4.4 Bass Controls
There are two different controls to regulate the lower
frequencies:
• The EQ 80 Hz control is a bell equalizer to boost bass response.
• The <150 Hz control is a shelf filter that allows to progressively
raise or lower the frequencies below 150 Hz (see Fig.).
4.5 Tweeter Controls
There are two different controls to regulate the high frequency
range above 6 kHz:
• The Gain control alters the input sensitivity of the tweeter
within ±2dB (0.5dB steps).
• The >6 kHz control is a shelf filter that allows to progressively
raise or lower the frequencies above 6 kHz (see Fig.).

All ADAM products are designed and manufactured to the highest quality
standards. However, if any problems with your speaker occur, we recommend
to proceed as follows:
5.1 Problem: The LED shows normal operation (green) but there is either no
or only a distorted audio signal.
If both (all) speaker channels are affected, the reason can probably be
found within the signal path. If only one speaker is affected, the problem
will probably be within this speaker or the external amp unit.
a) Check the wiring.
Is the cable defective? Are all cables connected correctly?
b) Check the signal path.
Interchange the cables of both external amp units. Does the problem
change with one of the cables?
Connect the external amp units as directly to the signal source as pos-
sible. Is another part of the signal path (e.g. mixer, subwoofer) defective?
If the answer to all these questions is ‘no’, the problem is being caused
by the loudspeaker or the external amp unit with the utmost probability.
If the answer to at least one of these questions is ‘yes’, there will prob-
ably be another defective device within the signal path.
5.2 Problem: You hear parasitic noises (like humming, buzzing, soughing,
cracking).
Please disconnect the signal cables.
If the noises disappear, check the signal path.
If the noises can still be heard, check for other electrical devices close to
the speakers (mobile phones, switching power supplies, etc.). If there is
no interfering device the speaker will probably cause the problem.
