1 Introduction / Overview
1.1 Product Description
This manual covers the installation and operation of an Axis AX-PENN and AX-PENN/ST7 Peripheral Expansion
Network Node module for use on Advanced Ad-NeT-PluS networks. The AX-PENN is a Class B network interface
module, while the AX-PENN/ST7 is a Class X (A/Style 7) network interface module.
AX-PENN (/ST7) peripheral expansion network node modules provide an on-board Axis AX peripheral bus (PBUS)
allowing for the connection of any Advanced peripheral bus module remotely from the Axis AX fire alarm control panel
(i.e.: switch LED modules, audio amplifier modules, relays, etc.).
Each AX-PENN or AX-PENN/ST7 peripheral expansion network node module can support an optional AX-DSP
graphical keyboard display for localized network monitoring and control.
This equipment is constructed with static sensitive components. Observe anti-static precautions at all
times when handling printed circuit boards. Wear an anti-static ground strap connected to panel
enclosure earth ground.
CAUTION: Before installing or removing any printed circuit boards remove all sources of power (AC and
battery).

2 Installation
2.1 Mounting
The AX-PENN (/ST7) is designed for mounting within any Advanced enclosure. The module mounts wherever an
Advanced peripheral bus module can be mounted. In addition, the module can be mounted to a single aperture plate
for single aperture opening installation (see figure 1 mounting locations).
To ensure EMC immunity to fast transient and surges the AX-PENN (/ST7) must be connected to an earth ground.
Each installation screw of the AX-PENN (/ST7) module provides a ground connection to its associated mounting plate
for eventual earth ground connection via the mounting plate/enclosure.
Failure to tighten screws will defeat the protection circuitry designed to protect the card from damage due to
lightning and static electricity.

2.3 Wiring
The AX-PENN (/ST7) peripheral expansion network node module is designed to be easy to install and wire. Pluggable
terminal blocks are provided for all wiring which can accommodate up to 14 AWG wire. Confirm wiring sizes are
adequate to deliver the required load current and maintain compatibility with the device voltages.
Note: Disconnect all sources of power (AC and battery) before installing components or servicing the module.
All wiring must comply with local, state and authority having jurisdiction requirements, in addition to Article
760 of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Refer to Axis AX Wiring Guide Section 4.

2.3.1 24VDC Power Supply
The AX-PENN (/ST7) module must be powered from an ANSI/UL listed 24VDC fire alarm power supply/charger (i.e.
AX-PSU-6). Wire the 24VDC supply to the FEED 1 24V and 0V IN terminals (see figure 3). If utilizing the supply
voltage for other power requirements, wire the 24V and 0V OUT terminals to the other 24VDC device.
2.3.1.1 Power Supply Monitoring
If the AX-PENN (/ST7) is powered from an external listed power supply/charger, the power supply/charger must be
monitored for trouble conditions. To monitor the external power supply/charger, wire the AX-PENN (/ST7) terminals I/P
SW+ and SW- terminals to a “normally open” failsafe trouble contact of the power supply/charge and terminate with the
supplied 3.3K end of line resistor (see figure 4). If monitoring an intelligent internal power supply/charger (i.e. AX-PSU-
6) place the supplied 3.3K end of line resistor across the I/P SW+ and SW- terminals.
2.3.1.2 Intelligent Power Supply Monitoring
If the AX-PENN (/ST7) is powered internally by an Advanced AX-PSU-6 power supply charger, connect the supplied 4
pin connecter to the PL2 plug-in connector on the AX-PSU-6; connect the other end of the supplied 4 pin connector to
the PSU COM (PL3) plug-in connector on the AX-PENN (/ST7) [see figure 5]. In addition, within the PC-NeT
programming tool, under Panel Details, Trouble Notification; program the AX-PENN (/ST7) for intelligent power supply
monitoring by placing a check in the associated box (see figure 6).

2.3.2 Ad-NeT-PluS Network Connection
Based on the installation’s Ad-NeT-PluS network, Class X (A/Style 7) or Class B, the correct AX-PENN (/ST7) module
[AX-PENN (Class B) or AX-PENN/ST7 (Class X)] must be installed.

2.3.2.1 AX-PENN (Class B) Ad-NeT-PluS Network Wiring
Wire the Ad-NeT-PluS network, A OUT, B OUT and SCN (shield) from the previous node to the A IN, B IN and SCN
(shield) terminals of the AX-PENN module (see figure 7). Wire the A OUT, B OUT and SCN (shield) of the AX-PENN
module to the next network node. If the AX-PENN module is the last node on the Ad-NeT-PluS network, place the NET
485 EOL (J2) jumper in the IN position (see figure 7).
2.3.2.1.1 Class B Ad-NeT-PluS Network
32 Network Nodes (requires 150Ω filtering resistor at the beginning and at the end of the network)
Maximum Overall Cable Length 5000ft
Cable wiring must be minimum twisted shielded pair 18AWG to 20AWG. Connect the shield to the designated shield
terminals only.
The “IN” terminals on the first node and the “OUT” terminals on the last node are not used. Connect an end of line
filtering resistor (150Ω) between A and B on the unused terminal blocks.
2.3.2.2 AX-PENN/ST7 (Class X) Ad-NeT-PluS Network Wiring
Wire the Ad-NeT-PluS network, A OUT, B OUT and SCN (shield) from the previous node to the A IN, B IN and SCN
(shield) terminals of the AX-PENN/ST7 module (see figure 8). Wire the A OUT, B OUT and SCN (shield) of the AX-
PENN/ST7 module to the next network node. If the AX-PENN/ST7 module is the last node on the Ad-NeT-PluS
network wire the A OUT, B OUT and SCN (shield) to the first Ad-NeT-PluS network node, terminals A IN, B IN and
SCN (shield) [see figure 8].

2.3.2.2.1 Class X Ad-NeT-PluS Network
200 Network Nodes
Maximum Cable Length between Nodes 5000ft
Maximum Overall Cable Length 66000ft
Cable wiring must be minimum twisted shielded pair 18AWG to 20AWG. Connect the shield to the designated shield
terminals only.
Wire from the last network node “OUT” terminals back to the first network node “IN” terminals to form a complete loop
“ring”.
2.3.3 Peripheral Bus (P-BUS)
The AX-PENN (/ST7) can support sixteen (16) of each type of Advanced peripheral bus modules. Peripheral bus
modules must be located within 20 feet of the AX-PENN (/ST7) module within the same room. Below is a list of
available peripheral bus modules:

2.3.3.1 Wiring
Wire the Peripheral RS485 terminals A OUT and B OUT to a peripheral bus module RS485 (PBUS) terminals A and B
(A to A, B to B) [see figure 9]. Place a 150 Ohm filtering end-of-line (EOL) resister on the last peripheral bus module.
Note: Though the AX-PENN (/ST7) can support Class A PBUS (peripheral bus) wiring, this feature is presently
not available, as existing peripheral bus modules do not support Class A communications.
2.3.4 Optional AX-DSP Keyboard Display
The AX-PENN (/ST7) can support a standard Advanced AX-DSP keyboard display, simply wire the keyboard display
cable to the AX serial port on the AX-PENN (/ST7) [see figure 10].
