4 4900 USB Analog Terminal Adapter
Introduction
Algo’s USB Analog Terminal Adapter enables the
use of a traditional analog wired or cordless
telephone, TTY/TDD terminal, fax machine (refer to
footnote on page 5), or other analog device with a
Nortel IP Softphone 2050 (Version 2 B254 or newer)
for Business Communication Manager (BCM) or
Communication Server 1000 (CS 1000).
Ring voltage and Caller Line Identification are
provided for inbound calls to the 2050 and outbound
calls are easily made with DTMF (touch-tone)
dialing. The USB ATA is powered entirely by the host
PC’s USB port to minimize cords and connections.
The USB ATA conforms to all relevant Windows Plug
& Play specifications making installation fast and
simple.

1Fax functionality requires G.711 Codec (no T.38 Support). Fax
performance may vary with PC and network capability. For this reason,

Connections
Installation
1. Connect the 4900 USB ATA to the PC using
the supplied USB cable.
2. The first time the USB ATA is plugged in,
there will be a pause while Windows
configures the device and locates the
appropriate driver software. During the
installation there may be a prompt to supply
the original Windows CD ROM so that
Windows can locate the drivers.

Troubleshooting
If the USB ATA is not functioning correctly, please try
the following in order:
1. Verify that you have Windows 2000 or
Windows XP. This can be done by clicking on
My Computer and selecting Properties.
2. Check that “Universal Serial Bus controllers”
appears in the Windows Device Manager. If it
does not appear, confirm USB is enabled in
your computer’s setup menus.
3. Check that “USB Audio Device” appears
under “Sound, video and game controllers” in
the Windows Device Manager. If it does not,
and the above conditions are correct, then
see the troubleshooting section under USB in
Windows Help.

Other steps you can take to verify proper operation
of the 4900:
Check Equipment and Connections
Lift the handset or go off-hook on your Telephone or
device. Verify that IP Softphone 2050 indicates off-
hook as well. If it does not, check the following:
•Telephone is properly connected to ATA via
Telephone cable
•ATA is properly connected to PC via USB
cable
•If USB Hub is used, ensure that the Hub is
line powered (ATA is a high power device
that requires 500mA)
•IP Softphone 2050 version meets minimum
requirements: Version 2 B254
•IP Softphone 2050 is successfully connected
to server and can go off-hook using the 2050
interface instead of the ATA
•Telephone is functional (try connecting to
standard analog line instead)

Check for Dial Tone
Lift the handset on your Telephone and listen for dial
tone. If there is none, check the following:
•IP Softphone 2050 indicates off-hook state
•Audio settings in the IP Softphone 2050 are
correct
Check Dialing
Lift the handset on your telephone and dial an
extension. The digits dialed should appear in the IP
Softphone 2050 Window and the dialed telephone
should ring. If not, check the following:
•IP Softphone 2050 indicates off-hook state
•Telephone is set to tone dialing (not pulse).
You should hear the tones in the handset of
the telephone when dialing
•Dial using the IP Softphone 2050 keypad
instead. If this does not work, verify that the
telephone number that you are trying to dial is
correct
Connect with another Telephone
Make a call to another Telephone. Verify that you
can hear the other party, and that they can hear you.
If this does not work, check that the audio settings in
the IP Softphone 2050 are correct.
