Ambu® Res-Cue Pump™
Hand Held Portable Suction Unit
1. Warning and caution statements
WARNING
• Read instructions before use. The pump should only be used by persons with
training in suction techniques.
• The use of the suction device may require that appropriate infectious disease
precautions be taken. Precautions should be taken during use, cleaning of the device
and disposal of the tubing and the container (as per your protocol).
CAUTION
• U.S. federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician
(USA and Canada only).
• Performance values given are achievable under test conditions. They may vary
during actual use.
• Never immerse the pump unit in water or other liquids. If this happens, the pump
should be replaced.
• If the pump is contaminated with liquids from the patient it should be replaced.
Otherwise cross-contamination might occur.
• Following each cleaning and reassembly the pump should be tested for correct
function (see section 7).
• Use only the supplied suction tubes and connectors.
2. Intended use
The Ambu® Res-Cue Pump™ is intended to provide quick and effective pharyngeal and
tracheal suction for multiple emergencies.

4. Description
Ambu Res-Cue Pump is a light portable suction unit that can be powered by one hand
and allows the other hand free for other important duties. This suction unit was designed
to provide simple operation and maintenance. The adjustable stroke knob will provide
different suction pressures.
5. Operating instructions
Select appropriate size tubing (according to the size of the patient) and attach it to the
adapter (if not attached already). Attach the adapter with tubing to the cap of the
container. The container should be attached to the pump.

6
7
CAUTION
• The pump shall not be shaked while pumping or during use.
• The pump should not be tilted for the angles more than 45 degree while pumping
or during use.
If the pump handle becomes difficult to operate, a blockage may have occurred.
Do not continue suctioning until the source of the blockage has been determined
(remove the blockage from either the catheter, the adapter or the cap).
CAUTION
It is very important that the container cap is attached all the way to the pump body.
Use of Ambu® Res-Cue Pump™
The Res-Cue Pump is operated by a simple squeezing action of the trigger. The
adjustment stroke knob will enable it to produce various suction volumes (see below).
Pull or squeeze the trigger toward the pump handle. This squeezing mechanism will
generate the vacuum in the pump and suck the fluids into the container. Once suction
is completed, remove tubing slowly from the patient. Remove filled container by
unsnapping the container (and tubing) from the pump. Place container along with the
tubing in the poly bag. Discard disposable tubing and container appropriately.
If required, place a label on the container for transportation to the laboratory.
Adjust the stroke
To adjust the stroke of the handle, turn the adjustment stroke knob. With the stroke
adjustment knob seated at horizontal position, the stroke provides a maximum vacuum
of -450 mmHg. With the stroke adjustment knob turned 90° counter-clockwise to vertical
position, the pump will generate a maximum vacuum of -225 mmHg.
Overfill protection mechanism
The collection container is equipped with an overfill protection mechanism. Once the
collection container is full, the overfill protection mechanism will be engaged. When the
mechanism is engaged, it is not possible to squeeze the handle for further suctioning
(extremely high resistance will be felt when trying to do so). When this happens, empty
the container or use a backup container for further suctioning.
The overfill protection mechanism will ensure that the fluid will not enter the pump
housing once the container is full.

Adapters
One grey adapter tip for finger-tip connector and one adapter for funnel shape
connector is included with the Res-Cue Pump. To use catheter with finger-tip connector
and funnel shape connector for suction, attach larger end of the adapter tip to the
canister cap and catheter to the smaller end of the adapter tip. Standard suction catheter
tubing with finger-tip connector and funnel shape connector is not included. Follow
your local protocol for all suctioning practice.
Note: If the pump is turned upside down, the overfill protection mechanism will be
engaged making it impossible to suction. If sudden resistance is felt during suctioning
and at the same time container is not full then the overfill protection mechanism might
have become engaged. If the overfill mechanism is activated and the valve blockage
occurred, the container should be removed from the pump unit to deactivated the
overfill mechanism and release the stuck valve. If it is still difficult to operate the pump
handle and resistance is felt, check for the blockage as described earlier.
6. Cleaning - disinfecting - sterilising
Disassembly
Remove the container by unsnapping the cap with attached container ②and tubing ①
from the pump ③.
Disinfect the pump and handle (by scrubbing with warm soapy water, mild detergent,
bleach solution etc.) before placing into storage.
Assembly
To assemble the Res-Cue Pump after cleaning screw a new container ⑤ into the cap ④
and push the cap firmly onto the connector of the pump ③ until it snaps in.
Select appropriate size tubing ① (according to the size of the patient) and select it to
the adapter (if not attached already). Attach the adapter with tubing to the cap of the
container ②.
7. Test for correct function
Check the handle’s condition and the pump function before returning it to service.
Mount a container, occlude the suction port by thumb or palm and squeeze the pump
handle to check for the vacuum.
