Symptoms:
1. When attempting to print from Tray1 the message “No Paper” appears on the LCD even
though paper is loaded in the tray.
2. There is a loud clicking/snapping noise when warming up or printing.
Possible Causes:
These symptoms are usually due to one or more of the following:
1. The Paper Empty (PE) Actuator may be stuck out of position.
2. A component within the tray drive assembly in the left frame of the machine may be damaged.
3. One or more gears on the left side of the tray may be damaged.
Explanation:
The root cause of these issues is the improper loading of paper into the tray, by either setting the
rear guide incorrectly or loading too much paper into the tray.
1. When the rear paper guide in the tray is set to a paper length that is longer than the paper
loaded in the tray, there is a gap between the front of the tray and the paper. The PE Actuator
will hang into this gap so that it is unable to detect the paper. With the actuator hanging in this
gap in front of the paper, the edge of the paper stack will catch on the actuator when an
attempt is made to remove the tray. If enough force is used while attempting to remove the
tray, the PE Actuator will be pulled out of position.

2. If the paper loaded in the tray exceeds the maximum level, or if the PE Actuator is out of
position as described above, the Paper Plate in the tray is prevented from moving up when it is
driven by the paper feed system. As a result, some gears in the paper feed system become
immobile while the other gears continue to rotate against them. This produces the clicking
noise and eventually results in gear damage.
Recommendation:
Perform the following steps to determine which of the above issues apply and repair accordingly:
1. Switch off power to the machine.
2. Remove the paper tray. If the tray is stuck, perform steps a-e below:
a. Push the tray back into the machine.
b. Turn the machine around and remove the Duplex (DX) Tray.
Removing the paper tray will result

c. The paper in the tray should be visible through the opening where the DX Tray was
installed. Carefully lift the edge of the paper and then remove it through this opening.
d. Reinstall the DX Tray.
e. Turn the machine around and remove the paper tray.
3. Remove any paper remaining in the tray.
4. Verify that the three paper guides in the tray are set to the correct paper size.
5. Examine the left side of the tray to determine whether all of the components labeled below are
present and undamaged.
a. Each gear can be ordered as a separate part for replacement.

6. Immediately to the left of the Roller Holder Assembly are two black plastic actuators. The
longer actuator is the PE Actuator. Check each of the following statements which describe the
correct position and movement of the PE Actuator when the machine is in its normal upright
position:
a. The part of the actuator that is hanging down should be angled slightly toward the back of
the machine.
b. The actuator should easily rotate up and toward the rear and should immediately return to
the original position when released.
c. The actuator should not be able to rotate toward the front of the machine from its resting
position.
▪If the PE Actuator is stuck or out of position, continue to step 7.
▪If the position and movement of the PE Actuator are correct, proceed to step 16.
7. While holding the Document Cover closed, tilt the machine to lie on its back so that the front is on
top.

8. Remove the Roller Holder Assembly:
a. Press down on the Lift Arm to release the Roller Holder Assembly.
b. Rotate the Roller Holder Assembly toward the front of the machine.
c. Slide the Roller Holder Assembly to the right.
d. Remove the Roller Holder Assembly by sliding it at an angle to the left.
9. Remove the Separation R Shaft Bearing:
a. Release the hook on the bearing.
b. Push the end of the Separation Roller Drive Shaft to the left far enough to clear the hook on
the bearing.
c. Remove the bearing.

10. While holding the PE Actuator in place, slide the Separation Roller Drive Shaft to the left far
enough to clear the hole in which the bearing was located. If Side Cover L has not been removed,
the sliding the shaft until it stops against the cover will put it in the correct position.
11. Rotate the PE Actuator down. With the Separation Roller Drive Shaft free of the machine frame
on the right side, the actuator should now be able to move freely enough to return to the correct
position.
NOTE: Be careful not to detach the EG Actuator Spring when performing this step.
12. Return the Separation Roller Drive Shaft to its original position by sliding it to the right.
13. Reattach the Separation R Shaft Bearing.
14. Reattach the Roller Holder Assembly.
15. Return the machine to its normal upright position.
16. Reinsert the empty paper tray into the machine.
17. Locate the Paper Level Indicator on the front of the tray on the right-hand side and verify that
the blue plastic fills the slot from top to bottom.

18. Switch on power to the machine.
19. During the warm up process the blue Paper Level Indicator should move all the way to the
bottom of the slot.
a. If the Paper Level Indicator moves to the bottom of the slot, then the machine is now
operational.
b. If the Paper Level Indicator does not move to the bottom of the slot, a component within the
tray drive assembly in the left frame of the machine is likely damaged. In this situation it will
be necessary to replace Main Frame L (part number LS7238001).
c. If the serial number of the machine indicates that it was manufactured prior to December,
2009, then the PE Actuator should also be replaced with an updated version (part number
LU7935001) in order to prevent the issue from occurring again which may result in severe
damage to the machine.

Procedure for Replacement of the PE Actuator:
This process is to be performed on machines with serial numbers prior to M9J000001 to replace the
PE Actuator with the new design of the part.

1. Switch off power to the machine.
