Introduction1
Fig. 1.1. The Building Status Unit II (BSU II).
A companion product to the NetGuardian 832A, the Building Status Unit II (BSU II) provides local annunciation
whenever an alarm occurs. The BSU II has a large visual indicator that will alert technicians to alarms. You may
acknowledge alarms locally on the unit, which will in turn acknowledge the alarm in the NetGuardian as well.
Audible levels may be adjusted from the side panel thumb wheel. The BSU II will interface to the NetGuardian
via 4-wire RS485 interface and may be located up to 1500 feet away. The NetGuardian will issue an alarm any
time the communication to the BSU is interrupted, so you will have constant visibility of your network alarm
system.
Features and Benefits1.1
• Bright visual indicator for quick status reference
• Loud audible alarm notification
• Adjustable volume control
• Communication status LEDs
• Easy DIP switch configuration settings
• Large acknowledge button for new alarm notifications

The BSU II support is available for the NetGuardian. Contact DPS for BSU II support for KDA, IAM or T/Mon
N
OC.
Use the following steps to connect the BSU II to the NetGuardian:
1. Remove the screw-lug barrier plugs from the bottom of the BSU II.
Note: requires small screwdriver to work with small connectors.
2. Connect communication wires from data port 8 located on the back of the NetGuardian — see Figure 6.1 and
Table 6.A.
3. Connect communication wires from data port 8 to the 4 position barrier plug — refer to Figure 6.1 and Table
6.A.
Note:
N
etGuardian version 3.0H and above is required to connect the BSU II — see Section 8 for additional
N
etGuardian configuration. The NetGuardian must have port 8 built with RS485 hardware.

Fig. 6.2 2-position barrier plug.
Use the following steps to wire the BSU II for power:
1. Connect a –48VDC power lead and a GND lead to the corresponding terminals of the 2-position barrier plug
— see Figure 6.2.
2. All barrier screws should be seated firmly but not over-tightened so as to nick the bare wire.
3. Push the plugs firmly back into their appropriate location on the bottom of the case.
4. Once the hardware connections are complete, power the unit(s) by applying -48VDC to the power lead.
Note: Always observe electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions.

Configure the BSU II7
Setting Internal Address7.1
Each BSU II must have a separate internal address. The address is defined by how the DIP switches 1-4 are set on
the unit. Refer to Figure 7.1 and Table 7.A and B for DIP switch definitions of the corresponding addresses.
Note: The addressing begins at address 1 and increments in sequences up to address 12.

Setting the COM Port Baud Rate7.2
Each BSU IIs baud rate must match the NetGuardian baud rate setting. The baud rate is defined by setting DIP
switches 5-7 — see Figure 7.2 and Table 7.C for DIP switch baud rate definitions.
Note: The required baud rate for NetGuardian interface is 1200.

Configure the NetGuardian8
The NetGuardian must be provisioned to operate the BSU II. You'll need to specify the number of BSU IIs on the
communication bus, the data port baud rate, and Sound On Timer duration. Use the following sections to
p

Using NGEdit8.1
Fig. 8.1 Configure BSU II support in NGEdit > Ports Tab.
Note: NetGuardian Firmware 3.0H and above required to configure the BSU II. 4-wire 485 mode is enabled
automatically at 1200 baud. The supported communication rate for BSU II applications is 1200 baud.
