The Operating Instructions contain information and safety regulati-
ons which are to be observed without fail for safe operation in the
described conditions. Non-observance of this information and these
instructions can have serious consequences or it may violate regu-
lations. Please read these Operating Instructions carefully before
starting to use the device! In the event of conicting information the
details specied in the Operating Instructions, Ex-Safety instructions
shall apply. In case of any doubt (in the form of translation or printing
errors) the English version shall apply.

2. Functional description / operating instructions
Please read these operating instructions carefully so that you
are familiar with, and are able to use, all features of the Ma-
gnet-Ex 12. For your own safety and information please read
the instructions on the following pages carefully!
2.1 General
The Magnet-Ex 12 can be used to detect quickly and pre-
cisely magnetic elds on solenoid valves, spools, transfor-
mers, relays and owmeters. The LED of the Magnet-Ex
12 responds to all types of magnetic elds, no matter if the
magnetic elds are alternating, direct and permanent elds.
The LED responds even if the probe is not in direct contact
with a solenoid valve, for example. The built-in test magnet,
which is located in the cap of the housing, allows you to run a
self-test and to check the battery simultaneously.
2.2 Application
Before each use, it is recommended to run a functional test.
This can be done by using the test magnet and placing it
close to the probe. The LED of the probe should light up.
The probe of the Magnet-Ex 12 can then be placed near to
a suspected magnetic eld of, for example, a solenoid valve.
If there is a sufciently active magnetic eld, the probe lights
up. The Magnet-Ex 12 detects via the magnetic eld if a so-
lenoid valve is working properly.

An intrinsically safe multimeter can only measure the current
or voltage of a valve, but the Magnet-Ex 12 will indicate as
to whether or not there is a sufciently active magnetic eld.
This way the operator can detect a fault of the valve spool.
If the valve does not work properly although the probe has
detected a magnetic eld, the valve is probably jammed.

2.3 Battery replacement
When the power of the batteries is becoming exhausted, the
LED becomes perceptibly darker while the sensor unit still
works faultlessly. Use the test magnet, which is located in the
cap of the housing of the Magnet-Ex 12, to check the bright-
ness and the proper functioning of the LED. If the LED is be-
coming darker or does not light up at all, you have to replace
the batteries (always outside the Ex-area). Only type-tested
batteries are to be used (refer to the table with type-tested
batteries in the separate safety instructions MAS-0153).

The use of any other type of batteries is strictly forbidden.
In order to replace the batteries, rst remove the cap of the
housing by unscrewing in an anti-clockwise direction.
Replace the batteries. Close the cap of the housing by rmly
screwing it in a clockwise direction.
- Always replace all batteries simultaneously.
- Pay attention to the correct polarity.
- Please ensure that all used batteries are properly
disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
- Make sure that the cap of the housing has been screwed
rmly.
3. Disposal
Old electrical devices as well as „historical“ old electrical de-
vices from Pepperl+Fuchs SE are supplied for disposal at
our expense and disposed of free of charge in accordance
with European Directive 2012/19/EU and the German elect-
rical law of 16/03/2005. The costs associated with returning
devices to Pepperl+Fuchs SE are to be borne by the sender.
The symbol has the following meaning:
Old electrical devices should not be disposed of along with
normal or household waste.
In accordance with “Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and
accumulators and waste batteries” we are obligated to provi-
de you with the following information:
Your device contains an alkaline battery.
Depleted batteries should never be disposed of along with
normal or household waste. Old batteries can contain harm-
ful substances that are hazardous to health and damaging to
the environment. Please return the batteries. Return is free
of charge and required by law. Please only dispose of di-
scharged batteries in the designated containers.

Note: The battery used in this unit poses a re hazard and
can cause chemical injuries if it is used improperly. Neither
the battery nor the battery cells should be opened or disas-
sembled and they should not be burned or exposed to tem-
peratures exceeding 100°C.
If the battery needs to be disposed of, it can be removed as
described under point (2.3). The disposal regulations speci-
ed above are also applicable for old devices.
All batteries can be recycled. Precious raw materials such as
iron, zinc and nickel can therefore be reused.
4. Cleaning, maintenance and storage
- Only use a suitable cloth or sponge to clean the unit.
Do not use any solvents or abrasive cleaning agents when
cleaning.
- It is recommended that you have the functionality and
accuracy of the unit inspected by the manufacturer every
two years.
- The batteries should be removed from the unit during pro-
longed periods of storage.
- Do not allow storage temperatures to exceed or fall below
the permitted range of - 40 °C to ... 60 °C.
5. Warranty and liability
In accordance with our general terms and conditions
Pepperl+Fuchs SE provides a warranty for this product for a
period of two years regarding its function and material under
the specied and permitted operating and maintenance con-
ditions. This excludes all parts that are subject to wear and
tear (e.g. batteries, probes, calibrations, LEDs, etc).
This warranty does not extend to products that are used
improperly, have been modied, neglected, damaged in
accidents or exposed to abnormal operating conditions and
inappropriate handling.
Any claims under the warranty can be invoked by returning
the defective equipment to the manufacturer. We reserve the
right to repair, adjust or exchange the device.

The aforementioned guarantee conditions are the sole and
only right of the purchaser to compensation, are exclusively
valid and replace all other contract or legal warranty obliga-
tions. Pepperl+Fuchs SE assumes no liability for special,
direct, indirect, accompanying or consequential damage
as well as losses including the loss of data, independent of
whether it was caused by violation of the warranty obligation,
lawful or unlawful action, action in good faith or any other
action.
If the limitation of a legal warranty as well as the exclusion
or limitation of accompanying or consequential damage is
not permissible in certain countries, it may be that the afore-
mentioned limitations and exclusions are not valid for every
purchaser. Should any such clause of these warranty conditi-
ons be declared ineffective or unenforceable by a competent
court, then the effectiveness or enforceability of any of the
other conditions of these warranty conditions shall remain
unaffected by such a judgement.
6. EU Declaration of Conformity
The EU Declaration of Conformity is enclosed with the sales
packaging as a separate document. Please also observe the
information provided underneath the table of contents.
