1. Safety and compliance

1.1 Denion of Warnings and Cauons

NOTICE:

For safe operaon from the start, read these instrucons carefully before you install

or commission the equipment and keep them safe for future use.

Read all the safety instrucons in this secon and the rest of this manual carefully

and make sure that you obey these instrucons. The equipment must only be

operated and maintained by trained personnel in the proper condion and as

described in this instrucon manual.

Obey local and state requirements and regulaons. If you have any quesons about

safety, operaon or maintenance of the device, please contact our nearest subsidiary.

Important safety informaon is highlighted as warning and cauon instrucons. Obey

these instrucons.

WARNING:

If you do not obey a warning, there is a risk of injury or death. Dierent symbols are

used according to the type of hazard.

CAUTION:

If you do not obey a cauon, there is a risk of minor injury, damage to equipment,

related equipment or process.

NOTICE:

Informaon about properes or instrucons for an acon which, if ignored, will

cause damage to the equipment.

1.2 Trained personnel

For the operaon of this equipment “trained personnel” are:

▪ skilled workers with knowledge in the elds of mechanics, electrical engineering,

polluon abatement and vacuum technology and

▪ personnel specially trained for the operaon of vacuum pumps

1.3 Safety symbols

The safety symbols on the products show the areas where care and aenon is

necessary.

The safety symbols that follow are used on the product or in the product

documentaon.

Warning/Cauon

An appropriate safety instrucon must be followed or cauon to a po-

tenal hazard exists.

Warning - Corrosive substances

The substance is corrosive.

Warning - Dangerous voltage

Idenes possible hazards from dangerous voltages.

Warning - Environmental hazard

2. Important safety informaon

2.1 Mechanical hazards

WARNING: VACUUM HAZARD

Risk of injury. Do not expose any part of the human body to vacuum as it can cause

injury.

WARNING: OPERATION SAFETY

Risk of injury or damage to the equipment. Do not operate the pump with an open

and accessible inlet. Make sure that the vacuum connecons, oil lling and oil

draining ports are not open during the operaon of the pump.

2.2 Electrical hazards

WARNING: HIGH ELECTRIC VOLTAGE

Risk of electric shock. Covers marked with this symbol must only be opened by

trained electricians aer the pump is Lockout and Tagout.

1. Disconnect the unit from the power supply before you start any work on the

pump.

2. Always operate the pump with a properly connected protecve earth conductor

and make sure that the motor connecon box is closed.

3. Lay the connecng lines so that these cannot be damaged. Protect the lines

against humidity and contact with uids.

4. Avoid thermally stressing the lines by unfavourable laying. Provide strain relief for

the connecng lines so that the plugs and the line connectors are not subjected to

excessively high mechanical stresses.

5. Lay the electric feed lines so that there is no risk of tripping over them.

2.3 Thermal hazards

CAUTION: HOT SURFACE

Risk of burn injury. During operaon the pump is hot and some surfaces can reach a

temperature higher than 85 °C (185 °F). Switch o the pump and let it cool down

before any intervenon or take appropriate precauons. It is recommended to use an

oil casing or pump touching protecon at high ambient temperatures. Make sure that

you wear protecve gloves before you touch any part during or just aer the pump

operaon.

2. Never remove the oil-ll or oil-drain plugs when the pump is in operaon. There

exists the risk of suering burns. Always wear protecve gloves and protecve

goggles also for protecon against the oil.

2.4 Hazards caused by materials and substances

1. The pump is not designed for:

▪ pumping of dusty, aggressive, corrosive, ammable or explosive gases or gases

mixtures

▪ pumping of oxygen or other highly reacve gases with a greater concentraon

than the atmospheric concentraon (> 20%)

▪ working in a ammable or explosive environment.

For all these cases, special materials must be used. In case of doubt, contact

us.

Also, see the limits of use indicated in the CE declaraon of conformity.

2. Depending on the process involved, dangerous substances and oil may escape

from the pump. Follow the necessary safety precauons.

3. Take appropriate precauons to make sure that the pump cannot start.

4. If the pump has pumped hazardous gases it will be necessary to determine the

nature of the hazard involved and take the appropriate safety precauons.

5. Take adequate safety precauons before you open the intake or exhaust port.

6. Follow the instrucons for environment protecon when you dispose of the used

oil or exhaust lters.

7. Some pumps use peruoropolyether (PFPE) as a lubricant. When handling (PFPE)

you should observe the following: During thermal decomposion at temperatures

over 290 °C toxic and corrosive gases are released. When handling PFPE keep it

away from open res. Do not smoke with PFPE on your ngers.

8. Touch the inner secons of the pumps only while wearing clean gloves and use a

clean tool. Do the necessary work in clean and dry rooms.

2.5 Danger of pump damage

1. There is a risk of severe damage if any object falls in the pump. Make sure that no

objects (screws, welding beads, nuts, washers, pieces of wire, ngs etc.) enter

through the intake port of the pump.

2. Make sure that liquid and solid parcles do not enter the pump. Install adequate

lters, separators and/or condensers. In case of doubt contact us.

3. Do not connect the intake line of the pump to a device with over atmospheric

pressure. The exhaust line must be designed so that the pressure will not exceed

1.1 bar absolute (0.1 bar relave).

4. Make sure that the pump exhaust is not closed or restricted.

5. The pump is designed for indoor use only and must be operated below 2000 m sea

level.

6. If you operate the pump without oil or with incorrect rotaon direcon for a long

me, it can destroy the pump and create dangerous situaons.

7. Never use discarded seals. Always use new seals for assembly.

8. The pump must be packaged in such a way that it will not be damaged during

transport and so that no harmful substances can escape from the package.

9. Pumps having no frequency converter (standard single or three-phase motor) and

having an exhaust port smaller than DN40 are not suitable for a connuous

operaon above 100 mbar absolute inlet pressure. Such operang condions

above 100 mbar absolute can damage the pump or its motor and lead to oil leaks.

Typically, these pumps are used on equipment requiring an inlet pressure usually

lower than 30 mbar absolute in connuous operaon.
