box sizes and buiLding tiPs
The material of choice for building a strong box is 3/4” to 1” MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard
or HDF (High Density Fiberboard). For a large dual boxes more than 2 Cu.Ft. adding additional
cross bracing using strips of this material is a good idea to help reduce panel vibration. Don’t use
particle board is not very good for speaker enclosures. It soaks up water like a sponge, is flexible
and will crumble when you try to screw the woofer in. A solid bead of wood glue is recommended
for joining two pieces of wood together along with 1-1/4 to 1 1/2” drywall screws or 1-1/2”
staples.
Remember the glue will be doing almost all the work once it has dried. A fastener placed about
every 3” will hold the box together good enough until the glue dries. After assembling the box
and allowing the glue to set up, use silicone sealer to make absolutely sure the corners and other
visible seams are perfectly sealed.
The sizes below are a guidelines according to our in car testing and computer analysis. Don’t
worry if you box is a little larger or smaller than the below recommendations the world will not
come to an end, the sun will come up tomorrow and you will probably won’t hear the difference.
Usually a change of more than .15 Cu.Ft. is needed before even someone with golden ears is able
to hear the difference.
