CMSH DTM and FDT frame application
5
1 CMSH DTM and FDT frame application
1.1 DTM and FDT
A Device Type Manager (DTM) is used for parameterisation of field devices. The DTM runs in frame
applications that have been implemented according to the Field Device Tool (FDT) standard.
FDT and DTM are cross-manufacturer concepts. Application of these concepts enables access to
different field devices from different manufacturers with one program.
A HART gateway or a HART master is required for hardware communication with a HART field device.
Software-side communication is via a Communication Device Type Manager (CommDTM). A CommDTM
provides a communication path to a HART field device for a specific fieldbus protocol. FDT frame appli-
cations have their own CommDTM or equivalent interfaces. Both the device DTM and the CommDTM
must be implemented according to the FDT standard so the DTM can be used in FDT frame applica-
tions.
1.2 Getting to know CMSH DTM
1.2.1 Functions
A DTM is available for the positioner CMSH with HART communication. The functions may be displayed
differently in different FDT frame applications.
The DTM includes the following functions:
–Offline and online configuration of the device
–Upload and download device configuration
–Save device configuration
–Import and export device configuration
–Monitor device health
–Execute device-specific functions
1.2.2 System requirements
–The device DTM, the corresponding hardware with the associated driver and a CommDTM must be
installed.
–The DTM supports the FDT 1.2.x specification and conforms to the FDT style guide.
–The DTM supports the HART 7 protocol.
1.2.3 Interface
The DTM user interface is available in German and English. The height and width of the user interface
can be adjusted. Content that is not displayed in the navigation area and application area can be
displayed using the scroll bar.
Additional information can be found in the FDT style guide for the FDT Group.

Application and action area
All device parameters are displayed in the application area. Some device parameters can be changed.
If a device parameter has been changed, a symbol è Tab. 1 Icons in the application area after
changing a parameter appears next to the selection field or the input field. All changed device
parameters are only accepted after pressing the ‘Apply’ button in the action area.
Symbol Meaning
The parameter value can be changed.
The admissibility of the entry is constantly checked.
If a parameter value is not allowed, this symbol appears.
If a parameter value is uncertain, this symbol appears.

Button Function
All changes to the DTM environment are applied.
The entire DTM environment is restored. The last saved parameter
values are displayed and the pencil icon disappears from the applica-
tion area.
The entire DTM is closed.

Status area
Status information about the DTM and the device is shown in the status area. The following informa-
tion is displayed:
–The connection status of the DTM
–The feedback of an active communication between DTM and device
–The source and state of the displayed data
–The device status according to NAMUR recommendation NE 107 of the currently displayed applica-
tion parameters
–The active user role
1.3 Functions of the FDT frame application
The FDT frame application PACTware 4.1 is used for the display. The display can vary depending on the
FDT frame application.
Function Description
Connect An attempt is made to establish a connection between DTM and the
device via the communication path defined in the project.
In the project view of the FDT frame application, all participating DTM
and the CommDTM are highlighted. If the connection could be estab-
lished successfully, the corresponding icon is displayed.
If communication with the device could not be completed successfully,
an error message appears.
Disconnect The connection is automatically disconnected when the FDT frame
application is closed.
When a CommDTM is disconnected, all DTMs connected above it are
disconnected at the same time.
Load from device If there is a connection between DTM and device, the DTM starts to
read data from the device.
Which data is read from the device is specified in the DTM. The applica-
tion area can display the data successfully read from the device.

Setting up CMSH DTM
Function Description
Store to device If the connection has been successfully established, the DTM begins to
write data to the device.
The data written to the device is defined in the DTM.
Parameter The functions and parameters accessible via the DTM are called via this
function.
Add device This function can be used to add another device to the project view of
the FDT frame application. A catalogue of all DTM that can be used for
a CommDTM is offered.
Exchange device This function allows a device to be replaced with another equivalent
device.
Delete device This function removes the selected device from the project. In the case
of a CommDTM, all devices connected to it are also removed.
Properties <CMSH> CMSH This function is used to call up information about the selected DTM and
the field device.

2Setting up CMSH DTM
2.1 Installing CMSH DTM
Requirement: a FDT frame application must be installed.
1. Download the latest DTM installation package from the support portal è www.festo.com/sp.
2. Close all running programs.
3. Run the installer and follow the installation instructions.
4. If the DTM installation package has been installed successfully, start the FDT frame application.
ÄThe FDT frame application recognizes the DTM.
5. Update the FDT frame application project view.
ÄThe newly installed DTM is visible in the project view of the FDT frame application.
2.2 Updating CMSH DTM
•Reinstall the DTM to update it è 2.1 Installing CMSH DTM.
ÄThe previously installed DTM version is available in the project view of the FDT frame
application. The old DTM version will be overwritten.
2.3 Open functions of the FDT frame application
The process is described based on the FDT frame application PACTware 4.1. The process may vary
depending on the FDT frame application.
•Right-click on the desired DTM in the project view of the FDT frame application.
