3. Installing and operating the water heater
Read these instructions carefully before commencing installation. For any additional questions,
please consult our customer service department (see contact details).
Installation, commissioning and maintenance must be carried out by specialists as per the
applicable regulations (including EN 1717, DIN 1988, EN 12828 and VDI 2035 regulations for local
distributors, country specifi c rules and regulations) in a frost free area, on a surface capable of
holding the fully fi lled water heater.
A means of draining must be fi tted to the mains water feed. We recommend fi tting an Airfi x
diaphragm expansion vessel to the mains water feed pipe.
The TW safety valve must be fi tted in an easily accessible place as it needs to be inspected
regularly and must be fi tted with a drain connection (see mains water connection diagram). A
plate bearing the following legend must be affi xed close to the safety valve blow off pipe or on the
safety valve itself as appropriate:
For safety reasons, it may be necessary for water to escape from the blow off pipe while the
system is heating up. Do not shut off or obstruct the blow off pipe.
Before commissioning, please check that the Mg anode is properly earthed (if a separate earth
connection is available) and fl ush the entire water heating system. If using an impressed current
anode (standard from 1500 l), please consult the accompanying operating manual. If using fi nned
tube heat exchangers, insulation joints must be used (see Flamco calorifi er accessories).
Additional electric heaters must be fi tted as per the instructions supplied; they must be regularly
inspected and serviced. Only additional electric heaters with potential equalization resistance may
be used (see the manufacturer's documentation for the possibility of using fi nned tube heat
exchangers in combination with electric heaters).
Unused connections must be professionally sealed. Make sure that condensation, which could
cause damage, cannot build up in unused coiled pipes.
The seal tightness of the system as a whole must be checked under normal operating conditions
and during maintenance and, if necessary, the fl ange couplings must be tightened. The safety
valve must be checked at regular intervals.
The water heater must be included in the equipotential bonding.
Temperature control/gauge:
Up to 500 l: The temperature sensor in the control unit of the heater and, if applicable, the solar
controller and/or the sensor of the integrated thermostat (if fi tted) are fi tted into the vertical
immersion sleeve under the control box with the clamping spring supplied. The height of the
component determines the switching point for reheating. In water heaters with an operating
temperature above 55 °C, the sensor should be positioned above the respective water supply
connection. The thermometer's remote sensor is fi tted into place above the component (approx.
20 cm down) with additional clamping springs. The clamping springs must be internally attached
to the sensors in such a way that their attachment cannot interfere with readings. The immersion
sleeve can accommodate up to three sensors (see foldout).
750 and 1000 l: The sensors can be positioned individually using the sensor connecting block;
however, this depends on the requirements of the boiler/solar unit manufacturer. The particular
contours of the insulation may make it necessary to install the sensors on the water supply side or
move them there. The temperature can be read from the thermometer supplied. It is to be fi tted
on the front of the unit in the G½ fi tting.
3

1500 and 2000 l: There are two G¾ fi ttings in the front of the unit to hold the sensors (in immersion
sleeves) or thermostats, as appropriate. Once again, the position of the component determines
the switching point for reheating. The temperature can be read from the thermometer supplied. It
is to be fi tted on the front of the unit in the G½ fi tting.
If applicable, suitable protection against scalding must be fi tted to the hot water outlet.
Finally, attach the supplied type plate in a visible position.
4. Installing the foam insulation (from 750 l)
Up to three people will be needed to install the insulation, depending on the size of the water
heater. In the case of variants intended for retrofi tting (specially labelled), internal installation can
take place before the insulation is installed.
1. The insulation should be raised to room temperature before use (R). The expansion behaviour
of the insulation surface changes in the event of low room and/or ambient temperatures. For
PVC surfaces: Installation can only take place when the insulation has reached the
recommended temperature of approx. 20 °C (S). Installation is extremely diffi cult and may
even prove impossible if this temperature is not reached.
2. The perforated cut outs must be cut out as required with a suitable blade before applying the
insulation (R). The insulation can be used for different types of water heaters. Please note
which parts are needed!
3. Place the insulation over cut outs/inspection fl anges, etc., and lay it evenly around the water
heater (S). Starting at the centre of the insulation, stroke and tap it with fl at hands evenly in
both directions to achieve a good fi t around the water heater, without air bubbles (T).
4. Slowly zip up the fastener/adjustable hooks (fi rst or second rest position) while pushing the
foam surfaces (W) together.
5. If necessary, readjust the insulation by tapping with fl at hands and retighten the hook strips, if
applicable (T).
6. Insert the round top foam section in line with the cut outs and put on the deep drawn cover or
secure the polystyrene lid with an angled strap (Y).
7. Glue or mount the escutcheons in place and mount any fl ange insulation as required (Y).
8. Additional assembly of the water heater must be performed in accordance with the installation
instructions and applicable technical regulations (Z).
Warning: do not use pliers, tension belts, etc.!
Warning: do not expose the insulation to fi re or naked fl ames as it is fl ammable. Maintain
minimum distances from heat sources.
5. Further information
No liability shall be accepted for damage that is caused by failure to follow the installation and
operating instructions.
The required maintenance measures must be carried out by specialists or by the user on the basis
of local operating conditions and standards based on experience. The system must be subjected
to annual inspections and documentation under the terms of an agreement.
Protective gloves must be worn when cleaning inside the unit. The fl ange seal must be replaced
after cleaning.
The water heater must be situated to allow easy access for maintenance, operation, any repairs or
replacement. The construction measures required for this are not the responsibility of the
manufacturer or the responsible distributor. Furthermore, facilities for the secure collection and
drainage of water in the water heater must be provided to avoid water damage.
Warning: Hot water may escape from the safety valves or when draining the water heater; Danger
- risk of scalding. The system operator must prevent untrained persons from being put at risk.
Inspect the Mg-anode after two years of operation, and subsequently each year thereafter, replace
if necessary.
In hard water areas a commercial descaler may be fi tted in series, as the water heater
manufacturer is not responsible for natural limescale build up.
In principle, a minimum conductivity of 100 µS/cm must be adhered to, whilst the other properties
of water guaranteed in the relevant legislation on mains water must be adhered to. If in any doubt
the manufacturer should be consulted.
Sediment traps are recommended for both mains water and hot water systems. They, too, must
be regularly inspected in compliance with the system conditions.
Avoid electromechanical corrosive infl uences and mixed installations.

In
