Thisﬁreplacemodelisawoodburningﬁreplace

intendedandapprovedforinstallationineither

residential homes or buildings of standard

construction. This ﬁreplace system requires

the utilization of FMI PRODUCTS, LLC’s 8",

double-wall, and snap lock ﬂue pipe system.

Optional glass doors in several ﬁnishes are

available for this ﬁreplace (see Replacement

Parts and Accessories on page 16).

Before beginning the installation of the

fireplace, read these instructions through

completely.

its components are safe when installed

according to this installation manual. Use

of any components that have not been

designed and tested for this fireplace

system may cause a ﬁre hazard.

FRAMING

1. Frameopening for ﬁreplace usingdimen-

sions shown in Figures 2 and 3.

2. If ﬁreplace is to be installed directly on

carpeting, tile (other than ceramic) or any

combustible material other than wood

ﬂooring; ﬁreplace must be installed on a

metal or wood panel extending full width

and depth of ﬁreplace.

3. Set ﬁreplace directly in front of opening

and slide unit back until nailing ﬂanges

touch side framing.

4. Check level of ﬁreplace and shim with

sheet metal if necessary.

GLOSSARY

Flush Installation - type of installation

where front face of ﬁreplace is even or level

with wall.

ChaseInstallation-typeofinstallationwhere

chimney is enclosed.

Perpendicular Side Wall - applies to

minimum clearance between side wall and

ﬁreplace opening.

Nailing Flange - extended part on both

sides of ﬁreplace face that secures ﬁreplace

to wall.

Termination - cap that is placed at end of

chimney pipe.

SELECTING LOCATION

To determine the safest and most efﬁcient

location for the ﬁreplace, consider the follow-

ing guidelines:

• The location must allow for proper clear-

ances (see below).

• Considera location where the ﬁreplacewill

not be affected by drafts, air conditioning

ducts, windows or doors.

• Alocationthat avoids the cutting of joistsor

roof rafters will make installation easier.

• If an outside air kit is to be installed, ac-

cessibility to outside combustion air must

be considered. This can also be achieved

throughaventedcrawlspaceinsomecases

(see Optional Outside Air Kit on page 6).

• Ifgaslineis to beinstalled,considerlocation

of gas supply.

5. Before securing fireplace to prepared

framing,ember protector (provided) must

be placed between hearth extension (not

supplied) and under bottom front edge

of ﬁreplace to protect against glowing

embers falling through. If ﬁreplace is to

beinstalled on a raisedplatform,aZ-type

ember protector (not supplied) must be

fabricated to ﬁt your required platform

height. Ember protector should extend

under ﬁreplace a minimum of 1". Ember

protector should be made of galvanized

sheet metal (28 gauge minimum) to pre-

vent corrosion (see Figure 5).

6. Using screws or nails, secure ﬁreplace to

the framing through ﬂanges located on

sides of the ﬁreplace (see Figure 4).

HEARTH EXTENSION

Ahearthextension is required to protectcom-

bustible ﬂoor constructed in front of ﬁreplace.

Thehearthextensionisnotincludedandmust

be fabricated, The hearth extension must

projectat lease 12" onesideand20"on other

side of ﬁreplace opening.

Hearth extension must be made of noncom-

bustible,inorganicmaterialhavinganeffective

thermal conductivity of K=0.84 BTU IN/FT,

HR. F (or less) at 1" thick.

Thermal conductivity "K" of materials can

be obtained from manufacturer or supplier

of noncombustible material. The minimum

required thickness ofr any material could be

obtained by the following formula:

K factor at 1" = thickness required

0.84

For example, if the material selected has a K

factorof0.25,suchasglassﬁber, the following

formula would apply:

0.25 x 1.0" = 0.30" thickness required

0.84

If hearth extension is to be covered, use non-

combustiblematerial such as tile, slate,brick,

concrete, metal, glass, marble, stone, etc.

Provide a means to prevent hearth extension

from shifting and seal gap between ﬁreplace

frameandhearthextensionwithnon-combus-

tible material (see Figure 5).

WARNING:Hearthextensionis

to be installed only as described.

MANTEL CLEARANCES

Woodwork such as wood trims, mantels or

any other combustible material must not be

placed at least 9" above opening of ﬁreplace

(see Figure 6, page 6).

Combustiblematerialsabove9" and projecting

more than 1 1/2" from the ﬁreplace front face

mustnotbeatleast 12"aboveﬁreplaceopening

(NFPASTD 211, Sec. 7-3.3.3).

Mantels or any other combustible material

may also come up to the side edge of the

black metal face of the ﬁreplace. Clearances

from side of ﬁreplace to any combustible

material and wall should fall within the limits

show in Figure 7, page 6.

OPTIONAL OUTSIDE AIR KIT

(Models AK4 or AK4F)

The installation of an outside air kit should be

performed during the rough framing of the ﬁre-

place due to the nature of it’s location. Outside

combustionairisaccessedthrough andexterior

wall(AK4)oraventedcrawlspace(AK4F).See

Figure 8 and Accessories on page 16.

Avoid installing outside air eyebrow in areas

whereinlet opening may be blockedbysnow,

bushes or other obstacles. It should also be

located beyond the reach of children.

CAUTION: Air ducts must

not terminate in attic space or

garage.

The maximum height for the

air vent can not exceed 3 feet

below the ﬂue gas outlet of the

termination.

For further details on installation of outside air

kit, please refer to instructions included with

air kit. For operating instructions, please refer

to your owner’s manual.

Outsideairhandleis located on left-hand side

of ﬁreplace refractory (see Figure 9 on page

7, Model 36R shown). To close, pull done; to

open,pushup.Alwaysopen mechanismwhen

starting a ﬁre to provide adequate outside

combustionair. Close mechanism when not in

use to prevent cold air from entering room.

CHIMNEY SYSTEM

Chimney Height

Minimum chimney height measured fro

bottom of ﬁreplace to ﬂue gas outlet-end of

termination is:

Straight run 14 feet

Run with one elbow set 15 feet

Run with two elbow sets 24 feet

An elbow set consists of one starter elbow

and one return elbow. Uncommon circum-

stances such as neighboring hills, tall trees,

orstrong wind areas can causedowndraftsin

chimneysystem.Insuchcases,goingbeyond

minimum recommended height would be

preferable to provide a better draw.

Maximum height approved for any chimney

run with this ﬁreplace system is 60 feet as

measured from ﬁreplace bottom to ﬂue outlet

end of termination.

Double Wall Chimney System

The FMI PRODUCTS, LLC chimney system

consistsof12",18", 24" 36" and 48" snap lock

doublewall pipe segments, planned formaxi-

mum adaptability to individual site require-

ments.Actuallinealgainforeachismeasured

after each section is fully connected. Lineal

gain is the actual measurable length of a part

after two or more parts are connected.

Each double wall chimney section consists

of a galvanized outer pipe, a stainless steal

inner ﬂue pipe and a wire spacer. Pipe sec-

tions must be assembled independently as

chimney is installed. When connecting chim-

neydirectlytoﬁreplace,innerﬂuepipesection

must be installed ﬁrst with lanced (female)

side up (see Figure 10). Outer pipe section

can then be installed over ﬂue pipe section

with hemmed (male) end up. Press down on

eachpipesectionuntillances securely engage

hem on ﬁreplace starter. The wire will assure

proper spacing between inner and outer pipe

sections.

Continue to assemble chimney sections as

outlined above, making sure both inner and

outer pipe sections are locked together.

When installing double wall snap-lock chim-

ney together, it is important to assure the

joint between chimney sections is locked.

Check by pulling chimney upward after lock-

ing. Chimney will not come apart if properly

locked. It is not necessary to add screws to

keep chimney together. However, if desired,

use screws per directions provided on page

8, Figure 11.

USING CHIMNEY OFFSET

To achieve desired offset, you may install

combinations of 12", 18", 36" and 48" length

of double wall pipe (see offset chart and

Figure 11 and 12).

Chimney weight above offset rests on return

elbow. Straps must be securely nailed to

rafters or joists (see Figure 13, details A &

B, page 9).

Maximum length of pipe between supports

(return elbow or chimney support V12S-8-

DM) is 6' of angled run. Maximum of two 6'

angled run sections per chimney system.

FIRESTOP SPACERS (FS-8DM)

Firestop spacers are required at each point

where the chimney penetrates a ﬂoor or ceiling

joist space. Their purpose is to establish and

maintain the required clearance between the

chimney and the combustible materials.

When the pipe passes through a framed open-

ing into a living space above, the ﬁrestop must

beplacedontothe ceilingfrombelowasshown

in Figure 14. When the pipe passes through a

framed opening into an attic space above, the

ﬁrestop must be placed on the attic ﬂoor as

shown in Figure 15.

SUPPORT SECTIONS (12S-8DM)

The chimney support section is a 4-strap 12"

length of pipe. A chimney support is required

at the 30' level above ﬁreplace after a straight

chimneyrun(seeFigure16).Thissupportis de-

signed to relieve extra weight load on ﬁreplace

and elbows when high chimneys are installed.

PENETRATING ROOF

Tomaintaina 1"clearancetopipe onaroofwith

a pitch, a rectangular opening must be cut.

1. Determinethe center point through which

pipe will penetrate roof.

2. Determinecenterpointof roof. Pitch is the

distancetheroofdropsover a given span,

usually 12". A 6/12 pitch means that the

roof drops 6" for each 12" one measure

horizontally down from roof rafters.

3. Use roof opening chart (Figure 18) to

determine correct opening length and

ﬂashing required.

4. Remove shingles around opening mea-

sured. Cut out this section.
