Introduction

Overview

The Gigabyte WLMA102 Dual-Band Notebook Adapter Card delivers to you with today’s

fastest available wireless connection, and prepares you for the future. Without having to

swap notebook adapters, the WLMA102 lets you connect seamlessly to both 2.4GHz,

802.11b/g and 5.0GHz 802.11a wireless networks.

With Gigabyte’s exclusive SmartSetup 3, setup is a breeze. Connect and secure with

WPA in no time. The 802.11a wireless network operates in the less crowded 5GHz radio

band, so its becoming more popular as 802.11b/g networks get crowded with traffic.

The 32-bit PC Card WLMA102 Super G Wireless Adapter communicates over the 2.4GHz

802.11g wireless standard with throughput up to 15 times faster than the 11Mbps 802.11b

while still remaining fully backward compatible with that standard.

Notebook PC’s equipped with wireless adapters communicate with Wi-Fi Application

Points and wireless routers giving you the freedom of mobility, and the convenience of

getting online virtually wherever, and whenever there is a wireless network – keep in

touch with friends and family via email, instant messaging or just surfing the net, from

home, the airport, coffee shop or convention halls .

This manual will help you understand more about the powerful features and options of

Operating Modes

The GN-WLMA102 Notebook Card can operate in all of today’s wireless radio

bands:

Super G Wireless NotebookAdapter

•802.11b (11b) – The 802.11b wireless radio has a range of about 50

meters and a maximum throughput of 11 Mbit/s, however a significant

percentage of this bandwidth is used for communications overhead; in

practice the maximum throughput is about 5.5 Mbit/s. Although it’s

slower than 11g, it’s still the most commonly used network today.

•802.11g (11g) - In June 2003, a third standard for Wi-Fi was ratified:

802.11g. This version works in the 2.4 GHz band (like 802.11b) but

operates at 54 Mbit/s raw, or about 24.7 Mbit/s net, throughput like

802.11a. It is fully backwards compatible with 11b and uses the same

frequencies.

•802.11a (11a) - The 802.11a standard uses the 5 GHz band, and

operates at a raw speed of 54 Mbit/s, with net achievable speeds in

the mid-20 Mbit/s. The speed is reduced to 48, 36, 34, 18, 12, 9 then 6

Mbit/s as required to connect to slower AP’s. 802.11a has 12

non-overlapping channels, 8 dedicated to indoor and 4 to point to

point.

Chapter 2

Installation

Installing Drivers & Ez-Link Utility

You should use the drivers that are included on the CD-ROM rather than

the default Windows drivers. The Gigabyte WLMA102 drivers have special

features and utilities that give you more stability and security than

Window’s default “Wireless Zero Configuration”.

Follow stepsA through G below to install the Wireless LAN drivers and

Ez-Link Utility.

A. First, insert your Setup CD-ROM into your notebook PC’s CD-ROM

drive. The Splash screen will automatically open.

Install Wireless LAN Utility – Click to begin automatic wireless Utility

and driver installation

Visit the Gigabyte Website – Click to visit the Gigabyte support pages

Acrobat 5.0 – Installs Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Browse the CD – Opens Windows Explorer to view all files on the CD

Exit – Click to Exit the WLMA102 Welcome menu.

B. Next, insert your WLMA102 notebook card into your notebook PC.

With the label side up, insert your WLMA102 NotebookAdapter into

the free PCMCIA slot on your notebook PC.

C. Click “Install Wireless LAN Drivers and Utility”.

D. The Install Wizard will open as shown in figure 3 below. Click Next>

to let the WLMA102 drivers and Utility install.

E. You will get a message to install your Notebook Adapter now, if you

have not already done so. Make sure your Adapter is firmly inserted,

and click OK..

F. If you receive a message “The software you are installing has not

passed Windows Logo testing”, this is normal, and the software has

been tested to work with Windows. Click Continue Anyway. Follow

the installation prompts, and after completing installation, click OK.

Restart Windows, and remove the Setup CD-ROM from the CD-ROM

drive.

G. When the driver installation is complete, click Finish to close the

wizard. You will see the Utility Quick Start icon in your tray (the 4 bar

icon). If one or more wireless access points are available, you will

also see the information bubble message on your tray.

Congratulations. Installation of your Wireless Adapter is complete.

The Gigabyte WLMA102 default wireless settings are:

Infrastructure Mode, NO security, accepts all 2.4GHz and

5GHz wireless traffic, Super A/G mode ON, and power

save mode = ‘normal’. To change these or other settings,

please see Configuring the WLMA102 in Chapter 3.
