1 General
References in these instructions to British Standards and
Statutory Regulations and Requirements apply only to the
United Kingdom.
For Ireland the rules in force must be used.
The instructions consist of two parts, Installation and
Servicing Instructions for the Fire and the Instructions for
Use. The instructions are an integral part of the appliance
and must, to comply with the current issue of the Gas
Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, be handed to
the user on completion of the installation.
1 General Notes and Information
There are three cardboard cartons, which together contain
all the parts necessary for the fitting of the fire.
You may also have a cardboard carton with a spacer kit in
and a cardboard carton with a gas supply kit in.
Chatsworth (black) only. The brass coloured badge on
this appliance can be replaced with a silver coloured
badge.

MANIPULATION.
1.1 Important Notice
This fire is for use only on G20 gas @20mbar supply
pressure.
The fire is fitted with a safety device (combustion
products discharge safety device) which will shut it
down if there is inadequate ventilation and the chimney
is not clearing the products of combustion.
If the fire shuts down for no apparent reason the flue/
chimney and air inlets into the room must be checked.
Any problems found must be put right, by a competent
person, before the fire is used again.
IN ALL cases the room must be ventilated before
attempting to relight the fire.
The safety device must not be bypassed or put out of
action.
The safety device must be serviced strictly in accordance
with the instructions in this book.
Sealed components must not be interfered with.
Servicing instructions and identification of parts is given
in Sections 6, 7, 8 and 9.
It is essential that only genuine Glow-worm parts are
used.
All WARNINGS and cautions in these instructions must
be observed.

1 General
Sheet Metal Parts
WARNING: When fitting or servicing this fire care
should be taken when handling sheet metal parts, to
avoid any possibility of personal injury.
1.2 Statutory Requirements
The fitting of this fire must be done by a competent
person, in accordance with the current issue and relevant
requirements of:-
Manufacturer’s instructions, supplied.
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations,
The Building Regulations, The Building Standards
(Scotland) Regulations, (applicable in Scotland),
The Health and Safety at Work Act, The Control of
Substances Hazardous to Health, The Electricity at
Work Regulations and any applicable local regulations.
Detailed recommendations are contained in the current
issue of the following British Standards and Codes of
Practice:-
BS1251, BS5440 Part 1 and 2, BS5871, BS6891,
BS7671.
Manufacturer’s instructions must not be taken as
overriding statutory requirements.
1.3 Certification
This fire is certificated for performance and safety. It is,
therefore, important that no alteration is made to the fire
without permission, in writing, from Hepworth Heating
Ltd.
Any alteration that is not approved by Hepworth
Heating Ltd., could invalidate the certification, the
warranty and could also infringe the statutory
requirements.
CE Mark
The CE mark on this fire shows compliance with:-
1. Directive 90/396/EEC on the approximation of the
Laws of the Member States relating to appliances
burning gaseous fuels.
2. Directive 89/336/EEC on the harmonization of the
Laws of the Member States relating to electromagnetic
compatibility.
3. Directive 73/23/EEC on the harmonization of the
Laws of the Member States relating to electrical
equipment designed for use within certain voltage
limits.

1.5 Fire Location
This fire is suitable for hearth mounting only.
The fire must be secured to a vertical wall face.
This wall face may be a chimney breast or a surround
having a minimum flat area as shown in diagram 1.2.
The fire must not be fitted directly onto a carpet ,
combustible floor or combustible wall.
This fire MUST NOT be fitted in a room used or
intended to be used as a bathroom or shower room.
The fire can be fitted to a purpose made proprietary class
“O” - 100oC or 150oC surround.
The fire can be fitted to a precast flue conforming to the
requirements of the current issue of BS 1289 Part 1.
The fire can be fitted to a box and flue conforming to the
requirements of the current issue of BS715.
A suitable Flue Box and Flue, with instructions, can be
bought from:- Selkirk
Their product code No. 125BOX 0405905, see diagram
2.4 for insulation details.

1.6 Clearances
Restrictions must not be placed around the assembled
fire, see diagram 1.2.
A shelf or surround of a maximum depth of 150mm may
be fitted, provided clearances are as shown in diagram
1.2. However, for every 25mm extra above the fire the
depth of the shelf may be increased by 25mm.
Combustible furniture or materials must not be placed
closer than 1 metre to the front or sides of the fire.
1.7 Gas Supply
A concealed supply, from the rear, can be fitted.
It is necessary to protect the supply pipe with an
approved sheathing if the fire opening and flue have
been used for a solid fuel appliance.
The gas installation must be in accordance with the
current issue of BS6891.
The supply from the governed meter must be of adequate
size to provide 20mbar at the fire.
On completion test the gas installation for soundness
using the pressure drop method and suitable leak
detection fluid, purge in accordance with the above
standard.
1 General
1.8 Electrical Supply
WARNING: This fire must be earthed.
There are three methods of routing the cable.
Rear, right and left hand.
All system components shall be of an approved type and
shall be connected in accordance with the current issue
of BS7671 and any applicable local regulations.
Connection of the fire and system controls to the mains
supply should be through a common isolator, a double
pole isolating switch, fused 3A, should be used, having a
minimum contact separation of 3mm in all poles.
Wiring to the fire MUST be PVC 85oC insulated type
not less than 0.75mm2(24/0.20mm).
NOTE: Avoid all sharp edges when routing the cable.
1.9 Unpacking
There are three packs:-
Pack 1 - contains Body assembly, Fittings pack and
Fuel effect supports and pieces.
Pack 2 - contains Frame.
Pack 3 - contains Fret, Ashpit cover and (Baffle
Chatsworth only).
Diagram 1.3 shows the parts within the three packs.
Check contents of loose items pack against packed list.
You may also have a cardboard carton with a spacer kit
in and a cardboard carton with a gas supply kit in.

2 Flue System
The minimum effective height of the chimney must be
3metres.
Suitable flues and minimum sizes are as below:-
9in x 9in, 7in and 5in proprietary flue pipe.
125mm diameter conventional flue.
A brick built wall chimney properly lined with a single
wall, twin wall or flexible flue liner of minimum diameter
of 125mm. The materials to be used are stainless steel or
aluminium as specified in the current issue of BS715.
2.1 Front Opening, Catchment Space and
Minimum Opening Sizes
Note. Dimensions referring to catchment space on
diagrams are for 16 inch openings.
For fireplaces where the wall is not plastered and not
covered by BS1251 it is important that such installations
comply with the current issue of The Building
Regulations.
The catchment space and opening sizes must not be less
than dimensions as given in diagram 2.1.
Any combustible material, for example, blown vinyl wall
coverings, on the fire fixing face area of the surround
must be removed, see diagram 2.2.
2.2 Hearth Fixing
In ALL cases a fireproof hearth to the minimum
dimensions as shown in diagram 2.3 must be fitted.
2.3 Firebox
The fire can be installed using a firebox conforming to the
current issue of BS715, see Section 1.5.
The fire box must stand on non-combustible hearth of at
least 50mm thickness. The top sides and rear of the box
must be covered with a 50mm minimum thickness of
mineral wool insulation, see diagram 2.4.
NOTE: If the firebox is already fitted it must be insulated
as above.
2.4 Precast Flue
This fire is suitable for fitting to a precast flue.
There must be a minimum vertical equivalent height of
3metres. The minimum dimension in the horizontal cross
section of the flue shall be 90mm. The cross sectional
area of the flueshall be not less than 16500 mm2.

2 Flue and Ventilation
2.5 Precast Flue Minimum Opening Sizes
Refer to diagram 2.5.
Note: If a precast flue starter block to BS1289 Part 1 is
used. Fit a fire surround, if this does not give sufficient
depth to fit the fire fit a spacer kit. You may also remove
material as shown in diagram 2.5.
2.6 Check the Chimney
The chimney should be swept immediately before fitting
the fire.
However, where it can be seen that the chimney is clean
and unobstructed and there is no evidence that solid fuel
has been used, it need not be swept.
Remove any damper or register plate. Alternatively it
may be locked in the open position.
Before fitting the fire make sure that the base of the
chimney is clear of debris.
If the fire is to be fitted to a fireplace in which the air
enters from below floor level this supply must be sealed
off.
2.7 Test the Flue
Apply a lighted smoke match, or taper at the opening.
If there is a definite flow into the opening the fitting of
the fire can continue.
If there is no definite flow into the opening preheat the
chimney for about two minutes then recheck the flow.
If there is still no definite flow the problem MUST be
put right before continuing with fitting of the fire.

3.1 Fire Fixing - Electrical Cable Routing
It is essential at this time that you decide which way the
cable is to be routed.
Remove the burner and control box, take care not to
damage any components, see diagram 3.1.
1) Rear cable routing:
Make a hole in the grommet, push the cable through.
Refer to Section 1.8 and use enough cable to allow for
the future removal of the burner and control box, see
diagram 3.2.
2) Left and Right hand cable routing:
Refer to Section 1.8 and use enough cable to allow for
the future removal of the burner and control box, see
diagram 3.2.
Note: Avoid all sharp edges when routing the cable.
3 Electrical Supply, Gas Supply and Fire Fixing
3.2 Gas Supply - Connection
Refer to diagram 3.3.
Where the fire is fitted in nurseries, old people’s homes
and the like, the isolation device may be of the type
fitted with a removable key.
A flexible connection MUST NOT be used.
If the gas supply is through the rear of the appliance, the
angled gas service cock is used to isolate the fire.
Note: Left and right hand preformed pipe supply kits can
be bought. Part numbers 453925 (left hand) and 453926
(right hand). A means of isolating the gas inlet supply
must be fitted.

3 Electrical Supply, Gas Supply and Fire Fixing
3.3 Fire Fixing
There are two methods of fixing the fire:-
Method 1 - Standard fixing, see diagram 3.4. Standard
fixing with Spacer Kit, see diagram 3.5.
Use a 10mm masonry drill bit to drill the fire fixing wall
face. Drill to a minimum depth of 40mm to accept the
reusable anchor nuts and screws.
Note. If the fire fixing wall face is not of a solid
construction, use the cable fixing method.
Method 2 - Cable fixing, see diagram 3.6. To fix secure
the four eyelets in the fire opening. Attach the cables to
the upper cable tensioning brackets at the rear of the
appliance. Thread the cables down through the eyelets,
forward through the holes at the bottom rear of the
appliance and out through holes in the lower cable
tensioning brackets. As you offer the appliance to the
wall pull the slack cable tight. Thread the cables through
the cable clamps pull tight and secure with the cable
clamp locking screws. Apply extra tension if required
using the adjuster wing nuts. Loop the excess cable, do
not cut it off.
Cable fixing with Spacer Kit, see diagram 3.7. Fit the
spacer kit to the appliance. Then follow the instructions
as Method 2 - Cable fixing.
