not avoided, will result in death or serious
personal injury.
WARNING
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, could result in death or
serious personal injury.
CAUTION
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, could result in minor or
moderate personal injury.
The hazard statements are structured in the following
way:
SIGNAL WORD
Description of the hazard
Consequence of ignoring the warning
• Action to avoid the hazard.
1.2 Notes
The symbols and notes below may appear in
Grundfos installation and operating instructions,
safety instructions and service instructions.
Observe these instructions for explosion-
proof products.
A blue or grey circle with a white graphical
symbol indicates that an action must be
taken.
A red or grey circle with a diagonal bar,
possibly with a black graphical symbol,
indicates that an action must not be taken
or must be stopped.
If these instructions are not observed, it
may result in malfunction or damage to the
equipment.
Tips and advice that make the work easier.
2. Receiving the product
When receiving the product, check the following
points:
• The product corresponds to the order.
• The product is suitable for the actual supply
voltage.
• The product does not have any transport damage.
In case of any damage, contact the transporter
immediately.

3. Installing the product
Installation must be carried out by
Grundfos or an authorised service
workshop.
The free end of the permanently connected supply
cable must be connected by using a suitable certified
junction box or it must be connected outside the
explosive area.
CAUTION
Electric shock
Minor or moderate personal injury
‐Switch off the power supply before you
start any work on the product.
‐Make sure that the power supply
cannot be accidentally switched on.
When the sensor is re-fitted after oil change, it must
be cleansed by means of a solvent.
3.1 Explosion-proof environments
The control unit must protect the sensor:
1. The WIO sensor is approved according
to EN/IEC 60079-18. In Ex and IECEx
applications, the WIO sensor shall be
protected by an external current
limitation of 350 mA with a breaking
capacity of the maximum prospective
short circuit current of the supply. This
limited current must be provided by a
galvanic isolated power supply to the
sensor.
Note: As the IO 113 is equipped with
this current limitation and galvanic
isolated power supply, no further
protection is required when using an IO
113.
2. The sensor must always be installed in
such a way that it is protected against
mechanical damage and the possibility
for electrostatic charge.
3. The sensor must be installed
submerged in an oil chamber or similar
- not for use in air environment.
4. The sensor is protected using
protecting method "m" (EN/IEC
60079-18), "e" (EN/IEC 60079-7) and
"t" (EN/IEC 60079-31).
3.2 Mechanical installation
The mechanical installation depends on the pump
type and whether the wiring of the sensor in the pump
must be internal or external. See sections Internal
wiring, inside pump and External wiring, outside
pump.
However, the sensor must always be installed in such
a way that it is protected against mechanical damage
and the possibility for electrostatic charge. This will
typical be in the oil chamber or similar.

3.2.2 External wiring, outside pump
3.2.1 Internal wiring, inside pump
When sensors with internal wiring are to be replaced,
proceed according to the service instructions of the
pump in question.
It is important to ensure proper earth
connection between the metal housing of
the WIO sensor and the pump housing.
This is normally done through the holder
for the WIO sensor.
3.2.2 External wiring, outside pump
1. Fit the cable with a bush and an adapter for NPT
thread, typically 3/4".
2. Push the sensor into the oil chamber through the
filling hole and screw the bush into the thread. Do
not tighten the bush until the sensor is positioned
correctly in the pump.
3. Insert the sensor so far into the chamber that it is
completely submerged in the oil.
The product must not touch rotating
parts.
Ensure proper earth connection
between the screen of the cable and
the control cabinet.

3.2.3 EMC-correct installation
In the case of pumps with frequency converter it is
especially important to ensure an EMC-correct
installation.
The following rules must therefore be observed:
• The cable screen must be connected to earth.
• Screen ends must not be twisted as this will
destroy the screen effect at high frequencies. Use
cable clamps as shown in fig. 2.
• It is important to ensure a good electric contact
from the mounting plate through the mounting
screws to the metal cabinet of the frequency
converter.
• Use toothed washers and a galvanically
conducting mounting plate.

4. Starting up the product
Startup must be carried out by authorised persons.
Switch on the power supply and check that the signal
is as expected, 4 mA for 0 % water. If the signal is ok,
the system is ready for operation.

5.2 Applications
The WIO sensor measures the water content in the
oil and converts the value into an analog current
signal. The two sensor conductors are for power
supply as well as for carrying the signal to the
measuring device or controller. The sensor measures
the water content from 0 to 20 %. It also sends a
signal if the water content is outside the normal range
(warning), or if there is air in the oil chamber (alarm).
The sensor is fitted in a stainless steel tube for
mechanical protection.
It also has also special operation state, if the sensor
is in air (no oil detected), or the water content is more
than the measurable level (>20%).
5.3 Intended use
The sensor is normally used together with the
Grundfos IO 113 module, but it can also be used
together with other controllers with inputs of 4 to 20
mA.
Operation with standard controllers will miss the
special air detection state (3,5mA output from WIO),
and over 20% water detected state (22mA).
Together with the IO 113, the sensor filters the signal
and provides an easy readout of the actual value.
Furthermore, it is possible to set a user-defined
warning limit and calibrate the IO 113 and the sensor
to the oil .
The IO113 gives special warning signal in case of air
detection (blinking yellow indicatior).
