THE TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER
2 of 17
ABOUT THE ATC™
The Automatic Temperature Controller (ATC) can be
manually programmed to reach a desired temperature or
computer controlled for sophisticated temperature
profiling. The controller automatically determines the best
settings for optimal heating based on the thermal
response of a particular system. It features two
thermocouple inputs and one 24V heater output, allowing
regular or cascade operation. Regular or single loop
control is used for accessories with only a sample
thermocouple. Accessories equipped with a sample and
heater thermocouple use cascade or double loop control.
Cascade control minimizes damage to system
components, allows for over sizing heaters for optimal
heat-up rates and extends heater life by reducing thermal
cycling of the heater.
This manual contains only “quick start” instructions. For
detailed instructions see the included Watlow manuals.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS The Automatic Temperature Controller (ATC) is intended
for use in light industrial and laboratory environments.

CONNECTING THE ATC To connect the temperature controller to the accessory:
•Check to make sure that all the switches on the
temperature controller are off (Figure 1).
•Plug in the AC line cord into the unit and into a
suitable AC outlet (Figure 2).
•If your accessory has only one thermocouple,
connect the thermocouple to the connector
labeled TC1 on the back of the temperature
controller.
•If your accessory has two thermocouples,
connect the heater thermocouple to the
connector labeled TC2 on the back of the
temperature controller and the sample
thermocouple to TC1.
•Connect the heater to the heater connector
located on the front of the temperature controller.

SINGLE LOOP CONTROL

When using the ATC with accessories equipped with one thermocouple, the temperature
controller should be programmed as follows:
•
Turn on the power to the controller (Figure 1),
leaving the power to the heaters turned off.
SETTING THE
THERMOCOUPLE TYPE
•
Simultaneously press both the Up-arrow Sand
the Down-arrow Tkeys for approximately 3
seconds until the Input Menu prompt InPt
appears in the upper display and the Setup Menu
prompt SEt appears in the lower display:
InPt / SEt
NOTE: The controller has four Setup Menus: Input, Output,
Global and Communications. Use the Up-arrow Sand
the Down-arrow Tkeys to select a menu and the MODE
key to step through the menu prompts.
Pressing the DSPY key (Figure 3) returns the controller to
the display Loop from any prompt in the menu.
•
Press the MODE key. In1 will appear in the
lower display.
•If the upper display does not show an H, the
symbol for the K-type thermocouple used in most
Harrick accessories, press the Up-arrow Skey
until it does. If the item to be heated does not
use a K-type thermocouple, please see the
Watlow manual for the correct setting.
•Press the DSPY key to return to the main display
format.
CAUTION:
Changing the value of ln1 changes most other prompts to the factory default values.
Document all settings before changing sensor type. Verify the correct sensor type before
making a change.

•Press the MODE key four times. Cntl will appear
in the lower display.
•Press the Up-arrow Skey until nor appears in the
upper display.
•Press the DSPY key to return to the main display
format.
SETTING THE UNITS Make sure that this step is performed prior to setting the
low or high temperature limits.
•Simultaneously press both the Up-arrow Sand
the Down-arrow Tkeys for approximately 3
seconds until the Input Menu prompt InPt appears
in the upper display and the Setup Menu prompt
SEt appears in the lower display:
InPt / SEt
•Press the Up-arrow Skey twice. 9LbL appears
in the upper display:
9LbL/ SEt
•Press the MODE key once. C_F will appear in the
lower display.
•Either Ffor Fahrenheit units or Cfor Centigrade
units appears in the upper display.
•If the incorrect units are shown, press the Up-
arrow Sonce to change to the temperature units.
•Press the DSPY key to return to the main display
format.
SETTING THE LOW
TEMPERATURE LIMIT For routine operation, the low temperature limit for
thermocouple 1 (TC1) should be set to -200ºC, as follows:
•Make sure that the units have been set to
Centigrade, as described above.
