General Information

About This Release

Fabric OS version 3.0.1b firmware runs and delivers the full potential of the FC Entry Switch 8B

and FC Switch 8B products. Both switches are 8-port, auto-sensing 2 Gb/Sec and 1 Gb/Sec Fibre

Channel switches.

Overview

This release note includes a brief description of the new features and enhancements made in

Fabric OS version 3.0.1b. For detailed information on the items included in this release note, refer

to the appropriate user’s guide or reference manual.

Note: The information in this document supersedes any information found in other v3.0

documentation.

Fibre Channel Standards

Information about Fibre Channel standards and Fibre Channel in general can be found on the Fibre

Channel Industry Association Web site, located at http://www.fibrechannel.com.

New Features and Enhancements

New Features

ISL Trunking

Interswitch Link (ISL) Trunking is an optionally licensed product (Performance Upgrade (Option

001)) available on the FC Entry Switch 8B and FC Switch 8B products with Fabric OS

version 3.0.1b. ISL Trunking is managed using telnet commands or the Web Tools interface.

The ISL Trunking feature allows up to four ISLs, connections between two switches through an

Expansion Port (E_Port), to merge logically into a single link. When using ISL Trunking to

aggregate bandwidth of up to four ports, the throughput of the ISLs between switches in a fabric is

quadrupled. For example, at 2 Gb/Sec speeds, ISL Trunking delivers ISL throughput of up to 8

Gb/Sec.

ISL Trunking also supports high-bandwidth, large-scale Storage Area Networks (SANs) which

include core switches. ISL Trunking simplifies network design and reduces the cost of storage

management by optimizing bandwidth use and enabling load balancing of traffic at the frame-level.

For more information about ISL Trunking, refer to the ISL Trunking User’s Guide.

Advanced Performance Monitoring

The Performance Monitoring feature, previously available from the Performance View in Web

Tools, has been updated to include more functionality and is now called Advanced Performance

Monitoring. Advanced Performance Monitoring is an optionally licensed product (Performance

Upgrade (Option 001)) available on the FC Entry Switch 8B and FC Switch 8B products with

Fabric OS version 3.0.1b. The Performance Monitoring View is available from the Switch View,

and includes the following new features:

AL_PA Monitoring - Provides information regarding the number of CRC errors that occur in the

frames originated from each possible AL_PA attached to a specific port.

For each SID-DID pair, the following categories of information are available:

•CRC errors for the frames that has the SID-DID pair

•Fibre Channel words being transmitted from the port for the SID-DID pair

•Fibre Channel words being received by the port for the SID-DID pair

End-to-end Monitoring - Can be achieved by first configuring the SID-DID pair on which

monitoring needs to be performed. All ports in the SID-DID communication path in the fabric can

be used for the same monitoring purpose.

Fabric OS v3.0.1b Release Notes - 4

New Features and Enhancements

Frame Filtering Based Performance Monitoring - Provides frame statistics based on contents of

frame. The application of this monitoring can be used to collect statistics based on FC_Type,

Logical Unit Number (LUN), and read/write.

Reports - An existing report can be selected from a list of reports that are predefined. In some

cases, you can supply the object to be monitored and graphed.

Graphs - Graphs are displayed on a “canvas”, which can hold a maximum of 8 graphs

simultaneously.

•The collection of graphs in the canvas can be stored for later retrieval on the switch. Up to

20 individual canvases can be saved. Each canvas is saved with its name, a brief

description, and the graphs which comprise the canvas.

•Any graph can “zoom in”, or be magnified and detached from the main canvas, or

“removed” from the main canvas during a pop-up menu.

•Each graph can be printed to a specified printer.

For more detailed information, refer to the Advanced Performance Monitoring User’s Guide.

Speed Auto Negotiation

Speed Auto Negotiation is a new feature enabling a port to determine the highest common link

speed with another port, or set of ports, in fixed speed loop automatically. This feature is

implemented in accordance with FC-FS standard.

For more information, refer to the Fabric OS Reference Manual.

Enhancements

Fabric Watch

Classes

The following classes have been added in Fabric OS version 3.0.1b:

•AL_PA Performance Monitor Class - Monitors CRC errors on ALPA devices of Loop

ports.

•End-to-end Performance Monitor Class - Monitors transmitting performance, and

receiving performance errors and CRC errors of predefined SID-DID pairs.

•Filter-Performance Monitor Class - Monitors filter counter for a given port. Specific

filter counters such as SCSI read/write, are predefined through Advanced Performance

Monitoring.

Fabric Watch classes and areas are automatically loaded after the Fabric Watch license is installed.

Access.

Zoning

The following features have been added to Zoning in Fabric OS version 3.0.1b:

•WWN Zoning can now be enforced through the hardware.

•Zoning hardware enforcement can now be implemented on a zone by zone basis at the

port level.

For more information, refer to the Zoning User’s Guide.

Management Server

Management Server now uses Topology Discovery during the fabric topology discovery process.

The process involves two standards: FC-FS and FC-GS3.

•RTIN/RNID queries from FC-FS: Request Node Identification Data and Request

Topology Information are now supported.

•GATIN/GNID/GTIN from FC-GS3: Get Attributes of Topology Information/Get Node

Identification Data/ Get Topology Information are now supported.

Web Tools

The following views, tabs, and features have been added or modified in Web Tools v3.0:

Zone Admin View

Zoning Configuration Analyze Screen: The new Zoning Configuration Analyze screen, available

from the Zone Admin View, displays a summary of the saved configuration and attempts to point
