FPC Handling Instructions for T-series Platforms

Part No. 530-010119-01

Revision 1

25 August 2003

This document explains how to avoid damaging the Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) that

install into Juniper Networks T320 Internet routers and T640 Internet routing nodes. Many

components on the FPC are fragile and can be irreparably damaged if the FPC is not handled

carefully.

FPC Description

FPCs house the Physical Interface Cards (PICs) that connect the router to network media. The

main function of an FPC is to connect the PICs installed in it to the other router components.

Up to eight FPCs install vertically in the front of the T320 router or T640 routing node

(see Figure 1). The FPCs are numbered FPC0 through FPC7, left to right. Each FPC on a T320

router can house up to two PICs, and each FPC on a T640 routing node can house up to four

FPCs. An FPC can be installed into any FPC slot on the routing platform, regardless of which

PICs it contains.

FPCs are hot-removable and hot-insertable. When you bring an FPC online in an operating

routing platform, the Routing Engine downloads the FPC software, the FPC runs its

diagnostics, and the PICs in the FPC are enabled. No interruption occurs to the routing

functions. For more information about FPC functionality, see the T320 Internet Router

Hardware Guide and T640 Internet Routing Node Hardware Guide (accessible at

https://www.juniper.net/techpubs/hardware/index.html).

FPC Description

Figure 1: FPC Installed in T640 Routing Node Chassis

This document discusses how to hold FPCs in both the vertical and horizontal positions.

Regardless of orientation, the same terms are used for each of the four edges of the FPC (see

Figure 2):

Faceplate—The edge of the FPC that has slots into which the PICs insert

Connector edge—The edge opposite the faceplate, with the connectors that attach to the

midplane

Top edge—The edge at the top of the FPC when it is in the vertical position

Bottom edge—The edge at the bottom of the FPC when it is in the vertical position

The instructions in this document apply to both T320 FPCs

and T640 FPCs. The figures show T640 FPCs.

Many components on the FPC are fragile and can be irreparably damaged if the FPC is not

handled carefully. The following sections describe the procedures for properly handling an

FPC:

Failure to handle FPCs as specified in this document can

cause irreparable damage.

Store an FPC

FPC Handling Instructions for T-series Platforms

Store an FPC

Store an FPC as follows:

In the routing platform

In the container in which a spare FPC is shipped

Horizontally and component-side up on a flat, stable surface

When you store the FPC on a horizontal surface or in the shipping container, always place it

inside an antistatic bag. Because the FPC is heavy and antistatic bags are fragile, inserting the

FPC into the bag is easier with two people. One person holds the FPC in the horizontal

position with the faceplate facing his or her body. The other person slides the opening of the

bag over the FPC connector edge.

If you must insert the FPC into a bag by yourself, first lay the FPC horizontally on a flat, stable

surface, component side up. Orient it with the faceplate facing you. Carefully insert the FPC

connector edge into the opening of the bag and pull the bag toward you to cover the FPC.

Never stack an FPC under or on top of any other component (see Figure 3). Never lay an FPC

component side down.

Hold an FPC

You hold an FPC vertically when installing it into the chassis or an equipment rack. When

carrying an FPC, you can hold it either vertically or horizontally.

To hold an FPC vertically, follow this procedure (see Figure 4):

1. Orient the FPC so that the faceplate is facing you.

2. Place one hand around the FPC faceplate, about a quarter of the way down from the top

edge. To avoid deforming the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding strip, do not

press hard on it.

3. Place the other hand at the bottom edge of the FPC, against the heat sink that is about

midway between the faceplate and connector edge.

Figure 4: Hold an FPC Vertically

An FPC configured with four Physical Interface Cards

(PICs) can weigh as much as 32 lb (14.5 kg). Be prepared

to accept the full weight of the FPC as you lift it.

Hold an FPC

FPC Handling Instructions for T-series Platforms

If the FPC is in a horizontal position before you grasp it, place your left hand around the

faceplate and your right hand along the bottom edge.

If the FPC is in a vertical position before you grasp it (if it is installed in a router or routing

node, for example), you can place either hand around the faceplate and the other hand under

the bottom edge.

You can rest the faceplate of the FPC against your body as you carry it.

To hold an FPC horizontally, follow this procedure (see Figure 5):

1. Orient the FPC so that the faceplate is facing you.

2. Grasp the top edge with your left hand and the bottom edge with your right hand,

against the heat sinks that are about midway between the faceplate and connector edge.

You can rest the faceplate of the FPC against your body as you carry it.

Figure 5: Hold an FPC Horizontally

As you carry the FPC, take care not to bump it against anything. The components are fragile.

Hold an FPC

Never hold or grasp the FPC in any places except those indicated in this document. In

particular, never grasp the connector edge, especially at the power connector located in the

corner where the connector and bottom edges meet (see Figure 6).

Never carry the FPC by the faceplate with only one hand (see Figure 7).

Figure 7: Do Not Carry an FPC with Only One Hand

Do not rest any edge of an FPC directly against a hard surface (see Figure 8). If you must rest

the FPC temporarily on an edge while changing its orientation between vertical and

horizontal, use your hand as a cushion between the edge and the surface.

Install an FPC

The FPC power connector is located in the corner where the bottom and connector edges

meet. If a power connector prong becomes bent, it no longer aligns with the female

connector on the midplane, and the FPC no longer functions. To avoid damaging the power

connector when installing an FPC, follow this procedure (see Figure 9):

1. Attach an ESD grounding strap to your bare wrist and connect the strap to one of the

ESD points on the chassis.

2. If any PIC in the FPC use fiber-optic cable, verify that there is a rubber safety cap over

each transceiver on the PIC faceplate. Install a cap if necessary.

3. Orient the FPC vertically (see “Hold an FPC” on page 5) with the component side facing

to the right.

4. Tilt the top of the FPC toward you slightly.

5. Carefully align the connector edge of the FPC with the appropriate empty slot in the

chassis.

6. Gently rest the bottom edge of the FPC on the bottom edge of the slot opening, making

contact a short distance forward of the power connector.

7. Tilt the top of the FPC toward the chassis until the FPC is completely vertical.

8. Slowly slide the FPC into the slot until you feel resistance.

9. Align the ejector handles on the FPC faceplate in a position close to horizontal.

10. Simultaneously turn both ejector handles clockwise until you cannot turn them farther.

For instructions about connecting cable to the PICs on the FPC, see the T320 Internet Router

Hardware Guide or T640 Internet Routing Node Hardware Guide.

Take care not to bend or otherwise damage the power

connector prongs (see Figure 9).
