Systemoverview
1SYSTEMOVERVIEW
TheSynchronizingUnitschedulestheechosounderstotransmit
accordingtotriggergroups.Thereareatotalof16triggergroups
andanynumberofechosounderscanbeassignedtoagroup
(zeroormore).Eachgroupistriggeredconsecutively,whilethe
echosoundersassignedtoagrouparetriggeredatthesametime.
Onceitisdetermined(byreadingfeedbacksignals)orestimated
(basedonusersettings)thatallechosoundersinthecurrent
grouphavecompletedtheirpingcycle,thenthenextgroupis
triggered.Allgroupsaretriggeredinround-robinfashion.The
durationofeachgroupisnotxedanddependsuponwhatthe
maximumactiveperiodisfortheechosoundersinthatgroup.
Echosounderscanbetakenoutoftheschedulewithoutchanging
thegroupschedule,bysimplydisablingit.Ifagroupdoesnot
containanyavailableechosounders,thenthatgroupisskipped.
TheSynchronizingUnitsystemconsistsoftwomaincomponents:
•AWorkstationPCrunningtheSynchronizingUnit(SU)
application.
•ASynchronizingUnitthatinterfaceswiththeechosounders.

TheSynchronizingUnitapplicationprovidestheuserinterface,
whichallowsmonitoringofstatus,modifyingsettings,trigger
scheduleaswellasperformingdiagnostics.Theapplication
needstorunandbeconnectedtotheSynchronizingUnitinorder
forthesystemtoinitializeandbeoperational.However,once
thesystemisrunning,theapplicationcanbeshutdownand
disconnectedcompletelywhiletheSynchronizingUnitcontinues
tocontrolthetriggeringofechosounders.

TheSynchronizingUnitcontrolspingingandreceivesstatus
fromtheechosoundersviathesignalinterface.Atriggeroutput
isprovidedforeachechosounderaswellasinputsforreceiving
feedbacksignalsfromechosounders.Feedbacksignalsarenot
required,butwillbeusedwhenavailable.Iffeedbacksignalsare
notavailable,theSynchronizingUnitcanestimatetheperiod
requiredfortheechosoundertobecomeready.

Triggergroups
2TRIGGERGROUPS
Thetriggergroupsarethebasisfortheschedulingoftheecho
sounders.TheSynchronizingUnitusestheruntimeparameters
todeterminetheindividualtimingoftheechosounders,while
thetriggergroupsspecifyinwhatorderandwhichechosounders
willtransmittogether.
Thedisplayconsistsoftwoparts:
1Activegroupindicator(seeFig.Triggerstatusonpage7).
2Triggerschedule.
Theactivegroupindicatorshowswhichgroupiscurrentlyactive.
Groupsthatdonothaveanyechosoundersassignedtothemare
skipped.Amaximumof16groupscanbescheduled.Sinceeach
echosounderhasdifferenttimingrequirements,thedurationof
eachgroupwilldependuponwhichechosoundersareassigned
tothegroup(i.e.longestactiveperiodoftheechosounders).

Thetriggerscheduleshowsonesystemperrow,andthetrigger
groupsareshownacross.AgreenLEDdesignatesthattheecho

shouldbeassignedto(seeFig.Triggergroupsonpage8).
