Data Sharing Solutions From LaCie
As the extensive use of digital
consumer electronics contin-
ues to accelerate exponential-
ly, consumers and profession-
als are increasingly looking
for data storage and sharing solutions.
It’s clear why internal hard drives are rou-
tinely filled and servers stagger as storage archi-
tects struggle to keep up with the ever-evolv-
ing needs of digital consumers. Capacity and
compatibility limitations often contribute to
intractable workflow restrictions, and common
network storage solutions are prohibitively ex-
pensive and infamously difficult to integrate
into existing networks.
Solutions from LaCie
Meet the solution to your data-sharing needs:
the LaCie Ethernet Disk and Ethernet Disk
mini. Sharing huge amounts of data effort-
lessly between Windows, Apple and Linux en-
vironments is a breeze for the Ethernet Disk
and Ethernet Disk mini.
More Than Hard Drives
ink of the Ethernet Disk and Ethernet Disk
mini as “more than hard drives.” One of the
advantages of network storage is that you don’t
need to place the storage device near to your
computer. Simply power on the drive, plug the
Ethernet chord into a router or a switch on the
network, and begin sharing files.
e beauty of the Ethernet Disk and Eth-
ernet Disk mini lies in their simplicity. Once
the Ethernet Disk or Ethernet Disk mini is
connected to your network, all you need to
do is type http://edmini or the drive’s IP ad-
dress in your browser’s address field to access
the configuration page. Finding your drive’s
IP address couldn’t be easier; simply download
LaCie’s free IP Configurator.
Accessible to any computer via a Web
browser, administration and control can be
managed remotely or on-site, and doesn’t re-
quire a degree in network administration.

Flexible Cross-Platform Solution
Operating seamlessly in Windows, Apple
Macintosh and Linux environments, both
products feature an auto-sensing 10BaseT
and 100BaseTX connection to local area net-
works (the most common Ethernet-based
network connections) and support DHCP for
effortless setup. Both solutions are compatible
with TCP/IP, SMB/CIFS, Apple Talk, FTP
and HTTP file sharing protocols to easily in-
tegrate into your operating configuration.
e ExtremeZ-IP File Server (compatible
with the Ethernet Disk only) offers support
for Apple’s latest version of the Apple file
sharing protocol, AFP v3.1, as well as all the
important new Mac OS X features like sup-
port for long file names, file sizes over 2GB on
the server, single sign-on authentication us-
ing Kerberos, and true compatibility between
Mac OS 9** and Mac OS X files.
e Ethernet Disk supports up to 100 us-
ers – 25 connected simultaneously – on the
same network protocol. Modifying permis-
sions is a breeze, ensuring that file access is
controlled and sensitive files are protected
from prying eyes.
Web browser accessibility means that data
can be accessed from any internet-connected
browser.
LaCie Ethernet Disk:
The Professional Solution
Fortunately, small and mid-sized companies
and organizations have an alternative that
simplifies data management, enhances pro-
ductivity and improves data access, all without
the need for an expensive network administra-
tor. Simply connect the LaCie Ethernet Disk
to your Ethernet-based network, turn on the
power, and within minutes you’ll benefit from
a dedicated network storage solution that un-
burdens your server of storage tasks and leaves
your workstations’ hard drives all the capacity
they need to function efficiently.
e Ethernet Disk also benefits from
its embedded Windows XP operating sys-

Ethernet Disk or Ethernet Disk mini?
e Ethernet Disk was developed as a data-
sharing solution for small- to mid-size busi-
nesses or organizations, featuring an interface
that transfers data 10 times faster than the
Ethernet Disk mini. Shipped with capacities
of up to 2TB (1TB = 1000GB) with the op-
tion to increase to nearly limitless capacities
via USB-connected external hard drives, your
business can backup its files over the network
and archive massive blocks of data.
e Ethernet Disk mini was designed for
small office and home office users, and can
be used as a personal USB hard drive or as a
shared drive. With capacities up to 500GB,
the Ethernet Disk mini can handle any of
your small office or home office needs.
Secure Data Storage
In this age of security concern, your employees
can transfer files with confidence to their Eth-
ernet Disk and Ethernet Disk mini. anks
to the intuitive configuration interface, non-
technical personnel can easily grant or with-
draw read and write permissions to files at an

individual user level. For example, tempo-
rary employees can be given read-only ac-
cess to files.
e Ethernet Disk also comes with a
backup program to help guard against the
unexpected. Connect an external hard drive
to the Ethernet Disk via the USB 2.0 port
and schedule regular backups, and enjoy the
peace of mind that comes from the knowl-
edge of fully backed up data.
