Metra NET Network description
“Metra NET network” is based on industry standard CAN bus networking system to interconnect
different Metra devices. Metra developed several installation devices to make network installation
on the field easy and reliable. Network Repeaters ensure longer maximum cable length and almost
any desirable network topology. Network Splitter supports standard UTP cabling widely used in
computer installations.

Terminology
CAN
Controller Area Network. Industry standard field bus networking system.
Metra NET Network
Industry standard CAN network that is used for interconnection of Metra
devices.
Network device
(Metra NET Device)
Device connected to Metra NET Network (for example: Door Access
Terminal, Reader Terminal, Tripod Turnstile, Locker Controller….).
Network Controller
Special purpose Metra device that converts signals and communication
protocol between Metra NET (CAN) and computer’s LAN network (TCP/IP).
Network Repeater
Device that amplifies CAN physical signals to achieve complex networking
topologies or longer networking cable lengths.
Network Splitter
Device that splits Metra NET Network cable to connect Metra device.
Network Terminator
Each cable segment of the Metra NET network must be terminated on far
end with the Network Terminator (resistor).
RJ-45 connector
Standard UTP cable connector.
UTP Cable
Cable widely used in computer networks. Suitable also for Metra NET
Network. Cable wires are defined differently for Metra NET network. Never
mix Metra NET Network with other computer Networks. They are not
compatible!
Trunk Line
Main Metra NET Network (CAN) cable line which can be totally up to 1km
long and terminated with Network Terminator at the end. Network devices
are attached to the Trunk line via Network Splitters and should not be
located more than 10 meters away from trunk line.

Network installation products
Network Splitter
Used as interconnecting device for “Metra NET Network” by using
standard UTP cable. It is also used to connect Metra device to the
“Metra NET Network”.
It is passive device that do not need power for operation.
NOTE
Network Splitter does not need power supply for its operation! It
only connects device’s power lines to power supply’s power lines for
easier installation procedure!
NOTE
Connect only 12VDC power to the Network Splitter.
CAUTION
Do not connect 24VDC power to the Network Splitter!
CAUTION
Do not connect 230 VAC Mains power to the Network Splitter!
Network Repeater 2
Used to join two cable segments of the “Metra NET Network”. It has
two external RJ-45 connectors: IN line is connected to Network
Controller side. OUT line is Trunk line for connecting Metra Devices
and can be up to 1000 meters long terminated at far end with
Network Terminator (the other side is terminated inside Network
Repeater on OUT line).
“Network Repeater 2” is also used in series topology when total
length of cable is longer than 1000m. “Network Repeater 2 needs
Power Supply 12VDC to operate properly which is included in the
product package.
NOTE
Power supply for the Network Repeater 2 should be connected
through the UPS power supply unit.
Network Repeater 8
Used to join 8 cable segments of the “Metra NET Network”. It has 8
external RJ-45 connectors: IN line is connected to Network
Controller side, seven OUT lines are each Trunk line for connecting
Metra Devices and can be each up to 1000 meters long terminated
at far end with Network Terminator (the other side is terminated
inside Network Repeater on each OUT line). It is useful for complex

network topologies (star topologies) where several cables joins at
the single point.
“Network Repeater 8 needs Power Supply 12VDC to operate
properly which is included in the product package.
NOTE
Power supply for the Network Repeater 8 should be connected
through the UPS power supply unit.

TCP/IP. With nine additional RJ-45 Metra
NET Network connectors.
Network Terminator 120
Coloured Black. Used to terminate Trunk line. Single segment can be
up to 1000 meters long and connected to Network Controller or
Network Repeater.
Nominal impedance 120 Ohm.
Network Terminator 240
Coloured Blue. Used to terminate dual cable each segment
separately. Dual cable can be each segment up to 400 meters long.
Both cable segments join at the Network Controller or Network
Repeater.
Nominal impedance 240 Ohm
Emergency Open Push-Button
Key protected Emergency Open Push-button is used to initiate
Emergency Open procedure for all Electronic Locks connected to
Metra NET network.
Connects to Network Controller and Network Controller TCP/IP.

Connecting cable for Metra Devices
Cable to connect Metra device to Network Splitter if longer cable
needed.
Each device comes with own cable from 1 to 1.5 metres long.
Available lengths: 3m, 5m and 10m.
Mounting Network installation products
Mounting Network Splitter
Network Splitter can be mounted to a flat surface by a
screw through the hole in the middle.
The other possibility is to mount it on a flat surface by
adhesive label on the bottom of Network Splitter.
Mounting Network Repeater 2 to the Network Controller / Repeater
Mounting Plate for 19’’ rack
NOTE
Up to four “Network Repeaters 2” and one “Network Repeater 8” can be mounted to the “Network
Repeater Mounting Plate for 19” rack simultaneously.

Metra NET Network
“Metra NET Network” uses industry standard CAN network.
It is two wire bus topology which means parallel connection to each device. Wires are labelled CANH
and CANL on each Metra device.
NOTE
It is important not to mix connection wires for CANH and CANL!
