1. Safety Regulations
1.1. Correct Use
The HandyCom PTT is a handheld speaker microphone
intended for connecting to radio equipment. It is suited for
indoor and outdoor use combined with a radio set. The device
serves as a communication tool for first responders in
operations.
It is imperative that this operating manual be read and
observed when using the product. In particular, the safety
instructions, as well as the information for the use and
operation of the product, must be carefullyread and observed.
Furthermore, the national regulations applicable in the user's
country must be taken into account for a safe use.
Danger!
This product is supporting life and health. Inappropriate use,
maintenance or servicing may affect the function of the device
and thereby seriously compromise the user's life.
Before use the product operability must be verified. The
product must not be used, if the function test is unsuccessful, it
is damaged, a competent servicing/maintenance has not been
made, genuine MSA spare parts have not been used.
Alternative use, or use outside this specification will be
considered as non-compliance. This also applies especially to
unauthorized alterations to the product and to commissioning
work that has not been carried out by MSA or authorized
persons.
1.2. Liability Information
MSA accepts no liability in cases where the product has been
used inappropriately or not as intended. The selection and use
of the product are the exclusive responsibility of the individual

operator. Product liability claims, warranties also as
guarantees made by MSA with respect to the product are
voided, if it is not used, serviced or maintained in accordance
with the instructions in this manual.
1.3. Safety and Precautionary Measures to be Adopted
•Also read and observe the operating instructions for the
radio set and external accessories when you use it.
•The device can produce high sound pressures through
which it is possible to damage your hearing.
•Do not use the device in explosive atmospheres.
•Make sure that connecting cables do not get caught or
entangled on objects to avoid accidents.

Use

The device is made of impact-resistant synthetic material. Its
cable and housing are water-resistant, low-flammable and self-
extinguishing. It has a clothing clip, two PTT (Push-To-Talk)
buttons, a 3,5 mm jack socket and a jack socket for Nexus
plugs for connecting an external headphone or earphone as
well as an external headset. A separate emergency button is
available optionally. Both PTT buttons are connected in parallel
and have the same effect. The optimum distance for talking is
about 4 cm away. The radio set remains in transmit mode as
long as a PTT button is pressed. While an external earphone
or headset is connected, the loudspeaker or the loudspeaker,
microphone and earphone socket of the device remain off. The
clothing clip can be replaced by a button hook for the use in
vehicles.
3. Use
3.1. Volume Adjustment
You can use the volume control to adjust the volume in three
levels. The setting marked by the one dot gives the lowest
volume and the setting marked by the three dots gives the
highest volume.
(1) Adjust the volume to the level you require.
The volume adjustment also applies to external
earphones and headsets.

3.2. Connection to the Radio Set
Notice!
Some radio sets still output a supply voltage to the accessory
connector even when the radio set is off. In such cases, it is
advisable to disconnect the HandyCom from the radio set
when not in use for prolonged periods in order to protect the
batteries of the radio set.
(1) Switch off the radio set.
(2) Adjust the volume to the lowest level (see chapter 3.1).
(3) Connect the HandyCom to the radio set.
(4) Switch the radio set back on and adjust the volume to the
level you require.
The device is ready-to-receive.
3.3. Connection of an External Earphone
Notice!
The jack plugs must comply with the JIS C 6560 standard
(concentric plug and jacks); non-compliant plugs may damage
the jack socket.
The device has an earphone socket for connecting a set of
headphones or earphones using a 3.5 mm jack plug.
(1) Open the protective cover on the earphone socket.
(2) Insert the jack plug into the earphone socket.
The jack plug is fitted until it clicks into place.
(3) To talk, you can continue to use the PTT button and
microphone on the device.
(4) Close the protective cover after using the external
earphone.

3.4. Connection of an External Headset
You can connect an external headset to the jack socket for
Nexus plugs.
(1) Open the protective cover on the jack socket.
(2)Insert the Nexus jack plug into the jack socket.
The Nexus jack plug is fitted until it clicks into place.
Communication now takes place via the microphone
and earpiece in the headset.
(3) Close the protective cover, after using the external
headset, by firmly press down until fully closed.
3.5. Talking
(1) Press the PTT button to talk.
You can use the PTT button both on the side and on
the front.
(2) Speak loudly and clearly into the microphone.
(3) To finish transmit mode, release the PTT button.
3.6. Listening
The device is always switched to receive as long as the PTT
buttons are not pressed.
