The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, within an equilateral triangle, is

intended to alert the user to the presence of uninsulated "dangerous voltage"

within the product's enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk

of electric shock to persons.

The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to

the presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the

literature accompanying the appliance.

Marking by the "CE" symbol (shown left) indicates compliance of this device with

the EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) and LVD (Low Voltage Directive)

standards of the European Community.

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant

to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful

interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency

energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference

to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular

installation. If this equipment does cause interference to radio or television reception, which can be deter-

mined by turning the equipment on and off, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by

one or more of the following measures:

·Increase the separation between the equipment and the receiver;

• Water and Moisture - Do not use this product near water. Do not place any objects filled with liquids, such as

vases, on top, above or near the apparatus.

• Cleaning - Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol

cleaners. Clean only with dry cloth.

• Ventilation - Do not block any ventilation openings to protect the unit from overheating. This product should not

be placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided or the manu-

facturer's instructions have been adhered to.

• Heat - Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (includ

ing amplifiers) that produce heat.

• Grounding - Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two

blades with one wider than other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade

or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consultant an electrician

for replacement of the obsolete outlet.

• Power Cord Protection - Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plug,

convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.

• Lightning and Periods of Non-Use - For added protection for this product during a lightning storm, or when it

is left unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet.

• Servicing - Do not attempt to service this product yourself as opening or removing covers may expose you to

dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when

the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as when a power supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has

been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does

not operate normally, or has been dropped.

• Accessories - Only use attachments / accessories specified by the manufacturer.

• Overloading - Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as this can result

in a risk of fire or electrical shock.

• Power Sources - This product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking

label.

Getting Started

Introduction

Thank you for your purchase of the Power5amplifier.

Your investment in this product speaks volumes about

your uncompromising desire to experience the highest

levels of fidelity from your music and movie collection.

We could wax poetic about the inaudible noise floor,

bandwidth to channel 3 on your television and remark-

able phase accuracy of this amplifier. You can read all

about the specifications all you wish. While some of us

might find that interesting, the real heart of the matter

comes when you sit down and listen to your system. We

feel we have succeeded at the point when you have long

forgotten about the specifications, operating tempera-

ture, or even the fact that you have an amplifier connect-

ed to your system. All the watts, cables and setup con-

figurations should simply go away, leaving nothing

between you and the music.

Before you begin your journey to audio nirvana, we think

it's important that you invest a few minutes learning about

the proper setup and operation of the Power5. This will

insure your investment is maximized and the beginning

of the bragging rights associated with the pleasure of

possessing the most advanced amplifier on the planet.

We sincerely wish, that from this point forward, this were

the only reason you remember you even own a Power 5

Unpacking

Carefully unpack the Power5 and inspect all the contents.

Store all packing materials for later use, if possible. You

will need the packing materials, if you have to ship your

Power5unit.

Placement

The Power5amplifier may be placed on a shelf, or in a

standard 19" equipment rack using the optional rack ears

and hardware.

Ideally, the Power5should be placed in close proximity to

the NHT Controller or surround processor. Minimizing

cable lengths reduces the chance of noise pickup.

Note: Due to the placement of the Power5power switch

on the rear panel, do not install the Power5in a wooden

box or similar enclosure where access to the power

switch is blocked or inconvenient.



Connections

Audio Connections

CAUTION: Before connecting anything make

sure the Power5and all your other electronic

components are turned off.

Use the highest quality connectors you can afford. Keep

all your wires as short as possible and routed neatly to

minimize noise problems.

To minimize noise problems, try to segregate wires by

function, and separate them by the maximum practical

distance. Where audio wires and AC power cords inter-

sect, cross them at right angles.

The Power5 has five inputs. It’s best before you set up

your system to decide what channels are used for what

speakers. Here’s a typical 5 channel configuration:

Channel 1 -------- Left Front

Channel 2 -------- Left Surround

Channel 3 -------- Center

Channel 4 -------- Right Surround

Channel 5 -------- Right Front

When connected to the NHT Controller and are using the

NHT Bus, you need to use this configuration. This is due

to the fact that when the controller senses 2- channel

source material, it switches the Power5’s middle 3 chan-

nels to standby mode. NOTE: See section: Connections

with the NHT Controller

Speaker Connections

CAUTION: Before connecting anything make

sure the Power5and all your other electronic

components are turned off.

The minimum gauge speaker wire recommended for

runs of 20 feet or less is 14 gauge. Heavier special pur-

pose cable can be used for longer runs. For best results,

use equal length runs of cable for the left and right speak-

ers (or for the left, center and right speakers).

For proper response, the speakers must be wired in-

phase with each other. That is, the Red (+) terminal on

the amplifier speaker output must be connected to the

corresponding Red (+) terminal on the speaker. The

same is true of the Black (-) terminals. All speaker cable

or wire has a marking along one or both conductors to

help you make the correct connections. Weak bass and

the lack of a well-defined image are indications that

speakers are wired out of phase. A well-defined image is

one in which you can easily locate the positions of per-

formers in the sound field.

The gold plated binding posts on all NHT products will

accept raw wire or virtually any type of special purpose

terminal. If you plan to use raw wire, strip 1/2" to 3/4" of

insulation from the ends, twisting the exposed wire

strands tightly.

Loosen the binding post nut on the terminal until the hole

is exposed. Slip the wire through the hole in the binding

post. Tighten nuts on the binding post until snug. If you

use a wrench DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN or you may dam-

age the binding post.

Control Connections

The Power5has both 12 volt trigger connections and the

NHT Bus connection. A 12 volt trigger cable is supplied

with the Power5.

12 Volt Trigger can be used to remotely turn the Power5

on or off (in and out of standby mode) when it detects a

DC control signal from another component in your sys-

tem. The external trigger will accept 5 - 24 volt (DC) sig-

nals. For more information regarding external triggers,

consult your authorized dealer.

The NHT bus connection is an intelligent connection uti-

lizing ethernet infrastructure, using a typical CAT5 con-

nector. When connected to the NHT Controller it controls

on/standby/mute, just like the 12 volt trigger. NOTE:

when using the NHT Bus, do not use the 12 volt trigger.

The Controller can also turn on and off channels when

you are listening to five channel surround or just 2 chan-

nel stereo. This optimizes the Power5’s power supply

and reduces heat. The NHT Controller can monitor

amplifier status as well. The NHT Bus is an open arche-

tecture design so more fuctions can be added in the

future.

Connections with the NHT Controller

Chances are you bought the Power5 with a NHT

Controller and possibly NHT speakers. Here’s an exam-

ple of how the system should be connected. See the NHT

Controller User Guide for more information on connect-

ing your NHT system.
