1 Notes about this document
1.1 General
These operating instructions describe the parabolic sensor DBS30 as an accessory for the
ultrasonic measuring device SONOCHEK. These operating instructions contain important
information regarding safe operation as well as all information for proper and efficient use. They
must therefore be read prior to startup and all other steps.
Separate operating instructions exist for the light spot target device (Toppoint VI).
Read the operating manuals prior to startup and all other steps.
The parabolic sensor DBS30 must only be used by users who have read
and understood all the safety instructions in these operating instructions
and the operating instructions for SONOCHEK.
This document was created with due diligence. PRUFTECHNIK does not guarantee the
completeness, correctness and currency of the data presented here and is not liable for errors
or omissions.

2 Description of the parabolic sensor DBS30
2.1 Applications and intended use
The parabolic sensor is used for precise detection of ultrasonic waves across distances of up to
25 m. The following test steps can be carried out in conjunction with SONOCHEK:
Detection of leaks on compressed air, gas and vacuum systems,
Detection of electrical partial discharges and insulation damage,
Detection of leaks at windows, doors, cabins, vehicles or containers
(in combination with an ultrasonic transmitter DBT10).
2.2 Functional principle
The parabolic mirror reflects ultrasonic waves and focuses them on the ultrasonic microphone.
The ultrasonic microphone in the sensor converts sound pressure fluctuations in the air into
an electrical signal over a broad frequency range. This electrical signal is already amplified and
digitized in the sensor. Further data processing and output is carried out in the measuring
device SONOCHEK.
The target laser and the light spot target device assist in precise localization of damaged
points. If the sensor points towards the damaged point during the search, this point can be
detected by using acoustic signals by pivoting the sensor and searching for a local sound level
maximum. The damaged point can be marked with a target laser. The damaged point that is
marked can be targeted with the light spot target device.
