Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Device definition

The Teldat-3Ge-USB (also known as the Antenna Ethernet-3G-USB) device routes outgoing data from a corporate

network to the WWAN (HSDPA/HSUPA).

• The technology used for WWAN access depends on the USB modem you connect to the device. The modem

provides access to the HSDPA, HSUPA, UMTS and GPRS networks.

• The device can be powered by an external source (supplied with the device), or via Power over Ethernet (PoE).

The external power source takes precedence when both types of power supply are available.

1.2 Application Scenarios

There are two application scenarios for the Teldat-3Ge-USB:

(1) Routers with WWAN communications where the WWAN coverage is poor due to problems with the location of

routers. Communications routers are often installed in racks alongside other equipment in rooms where WWAN

coverage is not very good.

(2) Backup for routers that do not have WWAN communications and can divert outbound traffic to the Teldat-

3Ge-USB.

1.3 Device interfaces and connection

The Teldat-3Ge-USB has three interfaces:

• Interface providing access to the WWAN network.

• Ethernet interface.

• USB host interface for connecting the USB modem.

The Teldat-3Ge-USB can be connected to the corporate router in two ways:

(1) Added to the corporate network, as an additional network device, sharing the Ethernet network with the corpor-

ate router.

(2) If the corporate router has more than one Ethernet interface, you can connect a 10BaseT cable directly from the

router to the Teldat-3Ge-USB, as shown in the following figure.

1.4 WWAN technology used in the device

As previously mentioned, the device uses two types of WWAN technology depending on the WWAN modem connec-

ted to the USB port:

• HSDPA technology (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access).

• HSUPA technology (High Speed Uplink Packet Access).

The following USB modems are currently supported with Teldat-3Ge-USB software version 1.10:

• Sierra Wireless Compass 885

• Sierra Wireless Apex 880U

• Novatel MC990D

• Huawei K3520

Note

The Teldat-3Ge-USB does not support the voice backup feature included on the Teldat-3Ge device.

1.5 Operating description

The Teldat-3Ge-USB boots up without an IP address in its Ethernet interface. It requests an IP address using DHCP

and only accepts the address offered by the corporate router, rejecting other addresses from DHCP servers connec-

ted to the local corporate network. This is achieved by configuring the corporate router as a DHCP server, which then

only offers IP addresses to requests from a Teldat-3Ge-USB. DHCP is also used to convey configuration information

to the Teldat-3Ge-USB.

The section on configuration of the DHCP protocol establishes how both devices, DHCP client and server, are identi-

fied, and the configuration information sent to the Teldat-3Ge-USB.

The next stage, once the Teldat-3Ge-USB has a valid IP address, is to establish the mechanism that allows data

backup.

Backup mechanism is based on the establishment of a PPPoE session or L2TP (Layer Two Tunneling Protocol) tun-

nel between the Teldat-3Ge-USB and the router. When the corporate router detects a failure in output to the public

or private network, it redirects the data traffic to the PPPoE/L2TP session established with the Teldat-3Ge-USB,

which then resends the traffic to the WWAN network.

1.6 Configuration Modes

The Teldat-3Ge-USB has two operating modes depending on the type of corporate router used:

• TELDAT mode, when a Teldat router is used.

• Generic mode, when either a Teldat or a Cisco router is used.

The difference between the operating modes is explained in the sections on configuration.
