with adequate training in carrying out mechanical and electrical

repairs.

CERTIFICATION The manufacturer certifies that this instrument has been carefully tested

and verified and that it complies with all applicable specifications before

being shipped from the factory.

The instrument complies with all applicable international safety standards.

GUARANTEE This product is guaranteed against all defects in material and workmanship

for a period of 1 (one) year. Any parts that are proven defective during this

guarantee period shall be repaired or replaced by the manufacturer free of

charge. No other guarantee is either specified or implied. Any unauthorised

changes, or repairs carried out by third parties shall make this guarantee

null and void.

The guarantee expires in the event of inadequate or erroneous use of the

instrument, or in the event that warning or cautionary messages are

ignored. The manufacturer assumes no responsibility for any damage that

may be caused, except in the case of manifest intent or extreme negligence

on the part of the manufacturer.

This manual is subject to modifications and changes without previous

notification.

One copy of this Service Manual is supplied with each instrument. Further

copies may be requested by indicating the version number, the number of

manuals required, the language (English, French or Spanish) and the date

SAFETY

ATTENTION:

Please, observe the following general safety precautions when

operating this instrument.

Non-compliance with these instructions means that you are

invalidating the standards of safety and use for which this instrument

was designed.

The manufacturer shall not assume any responsibility for inadequate

use of the instrument or for any failure resulting from non-compliance

with basic safety requirements.

DANGER:

EARTH CONNECTION OF THE INSTRUMENT

The instrument should be connected to safety earth network to prevent any

injury caused by electrical shock. The instrument is fitted with a plug with

an earth terminal. The power supply should be connected to a safety earth

circuit and comply with the standards of the International Electrotechnical

Commission (IEC).

DANGER:

MAINS VOLTAGE

Do not remove the covers from the instrument while it is in operation. Any

replacement or adjustment of components should be only be carried out by

authorised trained maintenance staff. Disconnect the unit from the mains

power supply before opening or removing any covers.

DANGER:

RISK IN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES

The instrument should not be operated in any area where there is a risk of

explosion.

When working with radioactive specimens, all procedures applicable to

protection against radiation should be observed.

Tools and materials

required Any maintenance work or adjustments to the STP 120 Tissue Processor

requires the use of the following tools and materials:

•Tester (Multimeter)

•Flat blade and Phillips screwdrivers (small and medium size)

•Allen keys in metric sizes.

•Small socket wrench in metric sizes

If it is necessary to replace temperature probes, apart from the

corresponding spare parts, the following items will also be required:

•Cyanoacrylate adhesive (e.g. Loctite, etc.)

•Silicone for semiconductors

•Standard neutral silicone

•Solvent and cutter

•Cable clamps (nylon/small)

•Sealed connection tags (for the paraffin baths)

Before taking any of the voltage readings, confirm the measurement points

by consulting the corresponding wiring diagrams included in this manual.

Troubleshooting

Problem:

THE UNIT DOES NOT START

Symptoms:

The 'POWER' LED does not light up.

1. Disconnect the unit from the mains power supply

2. Check the mains power supply cable.

3. Make sure that the mains voltage is the same as the voltage indicated in

the window beside the mains switch. Change the operating voltage by

inserting a screwdriver in the slot (see Figure). Open the fuse box

cover and invert the position of the red fuse holder as shown in the

diagram so that the correct voltage is displayed in the window.

Have they blown?

YES

Try to determine why the fuses blow.

Make sure there is no short-circuit.

Correct the fault.

Replace the fuses (115V/4AT or 230V/2AT), as described

above and go to the next step.

Make sure that the fuse has been inserted correctly.

Make sure that the clips holding the fuse in the voltage

selector make good electrical contact with the fuse body. If

they do not make good contact, close them slightly.

Any measurements made inside the unit first require

accessing the electronic system through the base. Proceed as

explained below to place the unit in an inclined position

Procedure for placing the

unit in position for

dismantling the base

1. Disconnect the unit from the mains power supply.

2. Activate the emergency battery:

- Turn the key switch located on the rear of the unit one

quarter turn to the right and hold it in position for about two

seconds.

- Return the key switch to the vertical position

3. Raise the cover of the unit by pressing the €key

4. Remove all the reagent vessels.

5. Remove the paraffin baths, but do not unplug the connectors to

prevent the control system from generating a message

indicating a temperature probe failure on start-up.

6. Lower the cover of the unit by pressing the €key

7. Place the unit in position for dismantling as shown in the

figure below and remove the lower front cover.

ATTENTION: Before lifting the unit make sure that there is

sufficient space behind the unit to prevent the cover

bumping against any object if it needs to be raised.

Lift the unit by holding it at the base; never hold it by the

cover as this could cause irreparable damage.

Make sure that the round base of the unit is also firmly

supported by the table or workbench.

WARNING: Some of the following check procedures may

require connecting the unit to the mains power supply.

8. Locate the resistance circuit board 1as shown in the figure below

9. Connect the unit to the mains power supply.

10. Turn the switch to the ON position to power up the unit.

11. Use a multimeter (tester) to check that there is the same voltage as the

mains between terminals A and D on CON6 LINE IN of the resistance

circuit board (115V or 230V, as selected on the mains switch).

Is there voltage?

YES

Check whether there is the same mains voltage between

terminals A and D on CON6 TRF OUT of resistance circuit

board (115V or 230V, as selected on the mains switch).

Turn off the unit. Disconnect the power supply cable. Replace

the lower cover and place the unit in a horizontal position.

Replace the mains switch with an identical make and model

as shown in the figure on page 26.

Once the mains switch has been replaced (fitted with a power

supply filter) turn the unit on and check whether it functions

correctly.
