Intro

our Verbatim Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive is a versatile external hard drive

eaturing

erformance stora

e with an Ethernet interface. Once

our drive is connected

erl

our network,

ou will be able to use it as

ou would an

our data and for

functions.

efore

ou be

in to use the NAS drive there are a few im

ortant thin

our new

. Reset Button. If the NAS drive is havin

6. Fan. The fan is desi

transferred,

you can help to prevent the

rom remaining on needlessly by shortening the disk

in-down time (see later under NAS Administration Reference / Advanced / Maintenance /

Disk Utility).

By using the web-based administration tool you can modi

ore you can begin storing data (other than as user “admin” or as an anonymous user to the

uest-share folder),

ou must use the web-based administration tool to setu

that defines

our User Name and Password. Furthermore,

Connecting t

e NAS Drive to Your LA

Now that

ou have some understandin

of user accounts,

ou are read

to connect

our NAS

rive to t

e LAN. Fo

ow t

ese steps.

1. Ensure that

our LAN e

ment is

owered on and that the LAN is o

eratin

erl

2. We recommended that you

ollow the directions o

your LAN equipment to enable a Dynamic

Host Confi

uration Protocol (DHCP) server. This ma

be referenced in

our e

ment’s

ocumentation as “Assign IP a

resses automatica

y”

3. Since

ou will administer the NAS drive settin

s usin

a web browser on

our PC or Mac,

ensure t

at t

is PC or Mac is powere

on an

connecte

to t

e LAN.

4. Connect the included CAT-6 Ethernet cable from the Ethernet

ort on the NAS drive to an

Ethernet switch (100 Base-T or 1000 Base-T), or a wired or wireless router. Make sure that the

NAS

rive an

e c

ient com

uter are on t

e same su

net

omain (e.

., 192.168.1.x)

. Connect the included AC Adapter to the NAS drive, and then to a wall outlet.

6. Press the ON/OFF button on the rear of the NAS drive. The front

reen LED will come on to

ndicate that the unit is now powered on.

7. Wait for the NAS drive to boot u

and to auto-confi

ure its connection on the network.

Depending on your particular LAN con

fi

guration and settings, this may take several minutes.

The followin

rotocols will be followed durin

auto-confi

uration, de

endin

on current

etwork settings:

. DHCP client is enabled b

default. Therefore,

our router or other LAN e

ment that

s providing the DHCP service will automatically assign an IP address to the NAS drive and

ete t

e networ

connection.

. I

no DHCP server is available on your isolated network, then the auto-negotiation

process will proceed in one o

two ways, depending on whether Bonjour protocol is enabled

r disabled. Bon

our

rotocol is built-in to recent Mac OS X s

stems, and can also be

ptiona

y insta

on Win

ows systems.

i. A

le Bon

our

rotocol is enabled b

default. In this case if

ou are connectin

to an

isolated Bonjour-enabled network and no DHCP server is present, your NAS drive will

otiate an address within the Bon

our ran

e of 169.254.x.x. If

ou want to determine

he speci

fi

c address within this range, you can use the network “ping”

unction to “ping

erbatimnas” or “

verbatimnas.local”. Alternativel

, if

ou have a PC on the LAN,

ou can run the included Finder.exe utility (provided to you on CD) to determine the

add

ess.

ii. I

the NAS drive has been previously accessed in order to disable Bonjour and you

are now connectin

to a network with no DHCP server

resent, then a different auto

negotiation takes place. In this case the NAS drive will automatically launch its internal

HCP server. This will result in the NAS drive taking the de

ault IP address o

192.168.1.1

and will also assi

n addresses (in the ran

e of 192.168.1.2-50) to other DHCP clients on

the

8. After successfull

ou will be able to see the NAS drive on
