Safety instructions
Every WALTER power tool is produced in accordance with applicable standards
governing the manufacture, performance and safety of power tools.
WARNING: When using electric tools, basic safety precautions should always
be observed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and personal injury,
including the following.
Before using this machine, read all safety and operating instructions carefully
and save this owner’s manual for future reference.
1. Read this owner’s manual to familiarize yourself with the tool’s operation,
it’s particular features, applications and limitations.
2. Keep work area clean and well lit. A cluttered environment invites accidents.
Remove any material that may be ignited by sparks. Do not use this tool when
flammable liquids or gases are present. Keep handles clean, dry and free from
oil and grease. Do not use in rain, damp or wet locations.
3. Keep children and other persons at a safe distance from the work. Make sure
no one is under you when working in high places. Do not let unqualified persons
handle this power tool or extension cord.
4. Do not wear loose-fitting clothes or jewelry. They can be caught in moving
parts. Wear protective covering to contain long hair. Wear appropriate clothing
and other safety items, such as safety shoes, suitable working gloves,
ear plugs, etc.
5. Always use safety glasses. If necessary, also wear a face or dust mask during
dusty operations and a respirator to avoid inhalation of dust particles.
6. Guard against electric shock by avoiding body contact with grounded surfaces.
Example: pipes, radiators, ranges, refrigerator enclosures, etc.
CAUTION: Avoid grinding, cutting, etc. wherever electrical wires may be
encountered. To minimize electric shock, hold the tool by the insulated handle(s)
and/or insulated housing only.
7. Stay alert at all times when handling a power tool. Watch what you are doing and
use common sense. Do not operate the tool when you are tired and never.
8. Before switching it on, remove all wrenches and keys which may interfere with
the operation of the tool.
9. Avoid unintentional starting. Make sure the switch is in its OFF position before
plugging in. Never carry any power tool with your finger or thumb on the switch.
10. Secure work pieces with clamps if necessary, hold the power tool firmly using
both hands. Do not overreach, maintain good footing and balance at all times.

11. Before further use of the tool, a handle, guard or any other part that may
be damaged, should be carefully examined to determine that it will operate
properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of moving
parts, binding or breakage of parts, mounting and any other condition that
may affect its operation. A guard, switch or other part that is damaged or
defective should be properly repaired or replaced by a WALTER Factory Service
Center or a WALTER Authorized Service Center.
Do not use the tool if the switch does not turn ON and OFF. Keep guards in
place and in good working order. Always use the side handle, when supplied,
for safety and better control.
12. Use the right power tool for the job at hand. Do not force a small tool to do the
job of a larger one. Use the tool for its intended purpose only. Never force it
beyond its rated capacity.
13. Use only tooling and accessories recommended for this power tool. Keep
cutting edges sharp and clean for safer and better performance. Always check
accessories and tooling before starting to work. Do not use if damaged or dull.
14. Keep hands away from cutting edges and all moving parts.
15. Do not touch accessories, tooling or work piece immediately after use,
they may be extremely hot and could cause serious burns.
16. Do not abuse the power cord. Never pull or carry a tool by its cord or yank
to disconnect it from the receptacle. Keep the cord away from heat, oil and
sharp edges. Inspect the cord periodically, if damaged, have it replaced by
a WALTER Factory Service Center or a WALTER Authorized Service Center.
17. Disconnect the power tool when it is not in use, before servicing, and when
changing accessories and tooling.
18. When not in use, store tools in a dry safe place, out of the reach of children
and other unqualified persons.

Introduction
Your WALTER power tool is precision built to meet the highest industrial standards
For maximum performance and longest tool life, follow the operating instructions
and service procedures outlined in this manual.
This tool is CSA certified for both Canada and USA.
This tool is double insulated, it must not be grounded. It may be safely
operated from a grounded or ungrounded receptacle. It is supplied
with a 2-conductor power cord and a polarized plug (one blade wider
than the other). The plug will fit only one way into a polarized outlet. If
the plug does not fit, have the outlet replaced by a qualified electrician.
If an extension cord is necessary, only one that is polarized must be
used. Do not change the plug in any way.
In order to maintain the safety features of the double insulation, the motor housing
must not be drilled to affix nameplates or the like. Self-adhesive labels may be used
for this purpose.
Voltage
Before connecting the tool, check that the voltage shown on the rating plate is the
same as that of the power source.
Operating the tool on a voltage other than specified on its rating plate, may result in
personal injury to the user and damage to the unit.
Extension cord
When an extension cord is required, use one that is heavy enough for the power
demands of the tool.
Extension cords of inadequate wire size cause a serious drop in voltage, loss of
power and possible motor damage.
To limit line voltage drop to a safe level, refer to the following table:

Note: Extension cords that are used outdoors, must be approved for outdoor use.

Side handle
Side handle (2) may be mounted on either side of the gear housing for greater
convenience in both right and left hand operation. This handle can also be mounted
on top of the gear housing for superior comfort during cut-off operations.
For reasons of safety and better control, the side handle must always be used.
Rear handle
The rear handle can be turned 90° in either direction. This feature allows for much
improved handling during applications such as cutting and grooving.
To change the rear handle position, press button (4) and rotate handle until you feel
it click into place.
Note: The switch must be turned OFF before rotating the handle. Make sure the
handle is properly positioned and securely locked before starting the tool.

Tool description and operation
Safety guard
The supplied safety guard must be mounted on the grinder when rigid wheels are
used for grinding, cutting-off, sanding, etc.
To mount guard, open clamping lever (6).
Aligning slot (8) in the clamping ring with lug (7) on
the gear flange, automatically lines-up the three pins
(9) on the guard with the grooves in the collar of the
flange.
Slip the guard down and rotate it anti-clockwise to
the required position.
Check that the guard is properly seated. Close the
clamping lever. If necessary, the clamping force can
be increased by tightning screw (5).
Spindle lock
To mount or remove abrasive wheels and accessories, disconnect the machine
from the power supply. Depress spindle lock button (3) while rotating the spindle by
hand until the locking mechanism is engaged. With the spindle in a locked position,
use the appropriate pin key or open-end spanner for the accessory being utilized.
Switch
To switch the grinder ON, depress locking button (1) and squeeze trigger (5).
To lock the switch in the ON position for continuous operation, release the trigger
first and then the lock button. To switch the grinder OFF, squeeze and release
the trigger.

Please be sure to read and observe the “SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS” at the
beginning of this manual.

Use only those accessories that are rated for at least 8,500 RPM and have
a maximum diameter of 7”.
Maxi-Grinder™ 6190 I
Use only those accessories that are rated for at least 6,600 RPM and have
a maximum diameter of 9”.
Always use the recommended safety guards when working with these power tools.

A standard wheel guard, to be used with grinding and cut-off wheels, is supplied
with these machines.
The use of any accessories other that those recommended may be hazardous.
Inspect grinding wheels and other accessories before using. Do not use any that
may be damaged.
Always wear eye protection.
For maximum performance and best efficiency, apply a steady and even pressure.
Do not use excessive force.
Grinding and cut-off wheels
Abrasive wheels with a thickness of 1/4” are
mounted as shown in Figure 1.
Wheels under a 1/4” thickness are mounted as
shown in Figure 2.
Wire brushes
To install a wire brush, unplug the power cord from the supply line, remove the
clamp nut and flange, and screw the brush directly onto the spindle .
Carbon brushes
This tool is equipped with self-disconnecting carbon brushes. When the brushes
have reached their minimum length, they automatically interrupt the current flow
and the tool stops .
Use only genuine WALTER carbon brushes. These brushes are specially made
for these tools. They will maintain their high performance standard and ensure
maximum life of the motor .
When the carbon brushes require replacement, it is recommended that the tool be
sent to a WALTER Factory Service Center or a WALTER Authorized Service Center.
Apart from changing the brushes, your power tool will be cleaned, inspected
and lubricated as required. If new parts are necessary, only genuine WALTER
replacement parts will be used.

Preventive maintenance
Your WALTER power tool should be properly maintained to insure continued
high performance.
Use low-pressure compressed air to blow out dust from the motor through the
vent openings.
Clean dust and dirt deposits from the exterior of the tool. Clean the power cord
to prevent deterioration from oil and grease and check for possible damage.
Note: Damaged cord sets must be replaced. Refer to Spare Parts List for the
ordering number.
