Overview of ZoomAir Wireless
Networking
ZoomAir wireless products allow you to build a wireless
network in your home or small office. This manual covers the
ZoomAir USB Client Model 4115. You can use the USB Client
alone as the locus of a small wireless network, or you can use
it with either an Internet Gateway such as the ZoomAir IG-
4150 or an Access Point such as the ZoomAir AP11.
With the ZoomAir USB Client, you can connect your computer to
the following types of setups:
•Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) networks that include
an Internet Gateway.
•Local Area Network (LAN) infrastructures that include
Access Points or other IEEE-802.11b compliant wireless
LAN systems.
•Peer-to-Peer, or AdHoc, workgroups of wireless
computing devices.
Your USB Client works with all ZoomAir PC Cards and PCI
Adapters.

USB Client Features
The ZoomAir USB Client is compatible with any wireless LAN
system that complies with the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN
standard.
It includes the following wireless LAN features:
•Automatic Transmit Rate Select mechanism: 11, 5.5, 2, and
1 Mbit/s rates increase range
•Frequency Channel Selection on Peer-to-Peer networks:
Variable number of channels within the 2.4 GHz band,
depending on the country, reduces the likelihood of
interference from other devices in the vicinity

•Roaming over multiple channels for wireless networks
located in large buildings
•Power management to increase laptop battery life
•64-bit RC4 Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) data
encryption for security.
ZoomAir Network Topologies
You can use your USB Client in three types of ZoomAir network
topologies and thus create a network that is partially or fully
wireless.
The ZoomAir USB Client Model 4115 functions like any standard
wired Ethernet card, but ZoomAir does not need any wires. An
Ethernet card requires a cable connection to a hub or patch
panel—the cable physically ties you down to the location of the
wired connection. ZoomAir allows you to connect your computer
to a LAN from anywhere within the wireless coverage area.
Expanding or redesigning your network is easy: Just add or relocate
Access Points or Internet Gateways, turn on your ZoomAir clients,
and you are done. Unlike a wired network, ZoomAir USB Clients
and Access Points enable you to roam throughout the network
while remaining connected to the LAN.
The three possible scenarios are described below.
Internet Gateway Home Networking
In this network scenario, you would use the USB Client
communicating with an Internet Gateway such as the IG-4150.
The IG-4150 functions as a gateway to the Internet via its dial-up
modem or an external Ethernet-style cable or ADSL modem.
Enterprise Networking
In this network scenario, you would use the USB Client
communicating with an Access Point or Internet Gateway
connected to a wired LAN infrastructure. This gives the computer
connected to the USB Client wireless access to all network
facilities.

Peer-to-Peer Workgroup
In this network scenario, each computer equipped with a wireless
Client is part of a small wireless workgroup where participants can
exchange files and printers as supported by Microsoft Networking.
You can use this scenario to set up a temporary “Peer-to-Peer”
network in environments where no access points are available (for
example, in SOHO environments), as long as the stations are
within range of one another.

Installing Your
ZoomAir USB Client
This chapter explains how to install and configure your USB
Client, which incudes the following steps:
•Installing the USB Client drivers.
•Connecting the USB Client to a computer.
•Configuring the USB Client.
•Installing the Client Manager software.
•Setting the Windows Network Properties. Note:

network adapter on your computer.
Note: Your USB Client works with Windows 98, 2000, and Me.
Windows 95 and Windows NT do not support USB
devices.

1Insert the ZoomAir CD in your computer’s CD-ROM drive.
The CD starts automatically and the Main Menu opens:

Click Install ZoomAir Software.
Note: If the CD does not start automatically, from your
desktop navigate to the CD-ROM drive and double-click the
icon for the CD-ROM drive.

2When the following menu appears, click Install 4115 USB
Client Driver Files.

3Follow the prompts.
When the AdSubtract Setup screen appears, you have a
choice of clicking Next to install this complementary ad-
blocking program now or clicking Cancel to install it later.
Note: AdSubtract does not support Windows 2000.
Then click Finish.

4If you are prompted to restart your computer, do so now.
Click Finish.
