OVERVIEW The Microscan BCR (Bar Code Reader) scanner (FIS 610-0018) can be
configured to work in Stand-Alone mode (Single Read Head) as well as
Multidrop mode (Multiple Read Head.) Most of the current bar code readers
have been shipped to accommodate both single read head and multiple read
head, with the addition of the Multidrop Series 5000 concentrator. This manual
provides a description of the installation and operation of the Microscan 600
series Bar Code Reader and Multidrop 5000 concentrator for single or multiple
read head applications on the AGILENT 5DX Automatic Inspection System.
Section One (1) discusses the configuration of the single read head BCR.
Section Two (2) discusses the configuration of the multiple read head BCR and
concentrator.
While many of the installation and operation parameters associated with this
system are specific to the 5DX/BCR interface implementation, this manual has
not been designed to serve as a theory of operation or software implementation
specification. This manual has been designed to assist personnel in the
installation and operation of the BCR subsystem for the AGILENT 5DX
product line. Agilent Technologies provides the bar code reader, cables,
connectors, power supplies and other accessories.
Please verify that the following items are included with the specific product as
shown below.

INSTALLATION
AND
CONFIGURATION
The 610-0002 BCR scanner will only work in Stand-alone mode. If you have a
Series 600 BCR then continue with Step 1. If not skip to “MICROSCAN
SERIES 5000 INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION” on page 12.

Model 5DX Stand-alone BCR Configuration
1 Connect the BCR components as shown in the diagram. The AC power
connection for the Power Supply is provide at the J Box mounted on the left
rear corner of the AGILENT 5DX Main Cabinet on Series I through Series
2L. AC power outlets are not currently provided on a Series 3 5DX. If the
customer has a Series 3 5DX, a local power supply will have to be accessed.
Connect the DC output power connector to J2 on the ADP-232 unit.
Assemble the BCR as in Figure 2.

2 Power on the BCR ADP-232. The Scan Head should generate a
continuous series of raster scan lines. Position the scan head towards the
standard bar code label at a distance of about 2.0" (50mm) and verify that
the raster scans across the length of the bar code label. Also check the
power status “green” indicator light is lit. If the code can be read from the
default settings, the "red" good read indicator light will also be lit. In
addition, the BCR read head will beep continuously while reading the bar
code label. Reference Figure 3

ADVICE
The Microscan box has a standard bar code label on the outside. The Microscan
will not read all labels. Use this label to check the BCR operation. Then use a
sample of the customer’s label to see if the reader will read the label. Distance
between the scanner and the label is important. In order to read the label it may
be necessary to adjust the distance several times
If this step fails, the red light does not come on, try these fixes:
•Try scanning alternative barcode labels. The first barcode sample
may have been bad.
•If still fails, repeat Step 1 to ensure that all cable connections are
good.
•If still failing, try resetting the BCR head (procedure on next page)
and test again.
If the BCR still cannot successfully scan any barcode, you should replace the
unit.
3 To confirm the BCR unit is in a known state, we will reset it. Remove the
connector at J4 on the ADP-232 unit CPU Interface cable (E7200-61709).
Use a piece of bus wire and jumper pin 7 to pin 11 on the ADP unit
momentarily. A series of beeps should be heard. As soon as the beeps start
sounding, release the connection, then quickly jumper pin 7 to pin 11 again.
When correctly executed, a single long higher pitched beep will be
heard after the short beeps. This long beep confirms the unit has been
reset. If a long beep is not generated, reconnect the jumper and repeat
the procedure. When successful, reconnect the cable connector to J4 on the
ADP-232 unit. Reference Figure 4

4 Configure the scanner (Optional). DO THIS STEP ONLY IF YOU
KNOW IT IS NECESSARY BECAUSE CONFIGURATION CHANGES
HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE PROGRAM. Usually this step is not
required for the stand-alone configuration because Step 3 resets the BCR
610 to the default configuration. Usually you will go to Step 5.
Configuring and testing the scanner must be executed from the AGILENT
5DX User Interface command window.
From the 5DX User Interface window select SYSTEM > Quit from 5DX.
The stand-alone configuration file should already be set for a Microscan
600 series scanner. However, if it is necessary to change the baud rate or
the number of read heads, then CFGSCNR.EXE will do it. Configurable
parameters are located in:C:\5DX\Release Root\CALIB\SCNR.CFG and
are shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5 Configurable parameters in SCNR.CFG
5 Running CFGSCNR (Optional). Return to the Master folder. At the Dos
command window prompt, type “cfgscnr 0” (0 is for identifying a single
read head). When CFGSCNR is executed, the current configuration settings
will be displayed to inform the user how the scanner is being programmed.
Figure 6 shows the usage and results.

Figure 6 CFGSNCR.EXE Usage and Output
If the configuration is set for stand-alone and the unit address is greater than
zero, the system generates the error shown in Figure 7.
Figure 7 Error Message for Invalid Stand-Alone Unit Address
If no error message is generated, then proceed to the next step. If an error mes-
sage is displayed, re-check the “scnr.cfg” file for the correct setup.
6 Verify BCR operation and alignment. Position the scanner head towards
the standard barcode label. Power on the ADP unit if not already powered
on. From the Dos command prompt, type “alignbcr –a”. The bar code
reader will automatically start reading the bar code label and displaying the
value it read on the screen. Distance between the reader and the barcode
will affect success. Two inches is a good starting point. See Figure 8.

Figure 8 ALIGNBCR Usage and Output for Automatic Mode
7 There is a second way to run ALIGNBCR.EXE. The user can specify an
“-m” parameter to operate the executable in manual mode. In this mode a
read cycle can only be generated by pressing the SPACE BAR. This will
allow the user to slowly control the alignment process. Once a read cycle
has been generated, the output will be displayed. Hit ESC to quit. Figure 9
shows the usage and output for manual alignment.
