Gigabit Ethernet Switches

New! The FriendlyNET GX5 family includes the smart GX5-2400W (top) and GX5-424W (bottom)

PRODUCT LINE GUIDE

“Most of the news in LAN product introductions these days is coming from

smaller companies, rather than the big names. Whatever the case, it

seems like there have been more new products from network up-and-

comers like…Asante Technologies than from others.

Asante recently debuted a new model of its most powerful workgroup

switch, which now has four ports of Gigabit Ethernet instead of two, in

addition to the 24 ports of 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet. It’s called the

FriendlyNET GX5-424W 24+4 WebManaged Gigabit Ethernet switch.”

Asanté Improves Workgroup Switch, November 6, 2003

FriendlyNET GX5 Gigabit Ethernet Switches 2

For your GHz computer with multi-GB of storage, Asanté offers a

complete family of Gigabit Ethernet switches. The FriendlyNET GX5

Series is the simplest, easiest way to move massive amounts of

information between computers and peripherals on your local area

network. With 8 popular configurations to choose from, Asanté has

the exactly the right Gig switch for your needs.

Every GX5 Series switch provides exceptional value for simple,

unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet switches that can run at the highest

throughput (full wire-speed). The strong metal chassis is

optimized for both compact size and to help dissipate heat—

providing many years of reliable service.

Asanté’s new GX5-2400W and GX5-424W switches are the smart

choices for workgroups with more than 16 users and peripherals.

Out of the box, these switches are ready-to-run in almost any

environment—with no setup required. To access each switch’s

advanced features, just open a web browser to enable trunking,

mirroring, virtual LANs (VLANs) and quality of service (QoS).

“This switch [FriendlyNET GX5-1300] is clearly designed to be a ‘drop in and

forget it’ solution for infrastructures that do not require flow or access control.

There is nothing to configure once you rackmount the unit.”

May 2003

FriendlyNET GX5 Gigabit Ethernet Switches 3

•Configure with Web Browser. All features are accessible from

an easy-to-use interface. No cryptic command line commands

or third-party network management applications required

•Mirroring. With a network analyzer (sold separately), look at

traffic on other ports; it’s ideal for troubleshooting

•Virtual LANs (VLANs). Improve overall network performance,

manageability and security by limiting organizing computers

and peripherals into logical workgroups. Data is delivered only

to the intended recipients while broadcast frames are sent

only to members of the VLAN (limiting broadcast domain)

•Quality of Service (QoS). Efficiently control network resources

by classifying traffic and prioritizing flows

All GX5 switches can connect to 10/100 Fast Ethernet devices

through some of the Gigabit (1000BaseT) ports. If you have several

10/100 devices, choose a switch (GX5-424W, GX5-208) with

dedicated 10/100 ports for a more economical solution.

Mounting your network equipment into a rack? Choose a

rackmountable GX5 switch (rackmount kit included) and all of your

equipment can be neatly stacked and mounted. If you’re not using a

rack, the switches can also be placed on a desktop.

To add Gigabit Ethernet over fiber, look for switches that include

GBIC ports, like the GX5-2400 and GX5-424W. Plug in an Asanté

or industry-standard module for 1000BaseSX or 1000BaseLX for

longer distance connections with maximum reliability. The GX5-

424W features small form factor pluggable (SFP) GBIC modules.

FriendlyNET GX5 Gigabit Ethernet Switches 4

“Two words come to mind when reviewing this product. The

first word is Solid. The build quality is superb; the switch

has a professional, serious look. The product is something

you’d be proud showing off in your next LAN party and the

diagnostic lights only add to the functionality of this unit.

“The other word is Quality. Working with the Asanté

reminds me how a company should work. The product works

as you expect it to work with the right drivers in place; a

manual that tells you exactly what to do; it doesn’t have

driver glitches or hardware failures, it simply does the job.

“Having the Auto Uplink feature on each port is also a plus,

considering you can hook up even larger networks together.

“Performance is much up to par with most Gigabit switches

out there, with a slight advantage over the competition. The

strongpoint of this product is the delivery perfection; I did

not notice any problems, drawbacks, driver issues, it simply

works out of the box with no complications. This is an

important factor when it comes to networking.”

With many Mac models now supporting gigabit speeds, it makes sense to

look towards a switch that can support slower speeds, such as 10/100

Mbps, but to leave room for also attaching higher-speed devices. The GX5-

424W has 24 10/100 ports, and a total of 4 gigabit ports…This device

supports advanced features, such as web configuration (no proprietary

software or cable required) Virtual LAN (VLAN) support, and Quality of

Service (QoS) to help prioritize and manage network traffic flow. Some of

these features are found in higher-end units, but are included in the GX5-

424W.

“As a medium-sized advertisement agency, we move files

around that can range in size from 100K to 1.5 Gig. The

average printer size file to our Xerox DC12 and Splash G640

printer is about 500 MB. We have been at 100BaseT until we

received our new GX5-2400! Not only can we produce

faster, but this switch moves files beautifully and fast. A

simple and elegant purchase that has made our agency

smooth as silk!”
