Identifying and Isolating Problems

You may experience problems while operating the machine. Take a minute to see if there is a

simple solution to your problem before contacting your local authorized Canon dealer.

Paper Jam Problems

Paper is jammed.

Cause Paper or an original is jammed in the machine.

Remedy Open all covers remove the jammed paper or original from the machine.

Paper jams occur frequently.

Cause Paper bits are left inside the machine.

Remedy Pulling jammed paper out of the machine by force may leave parts of the paper torn inside, leading to

frequent paper jams. Make sure that all the torn pieces are removed if the jammed paper tears inside the

machine.

Cause The paper type setting is incorrect.

Remedy Set the appropriate paper type, weight or size.

Cause The paper guides are incorrectly set.

Remedy Make sure that the paper guides in each paper drawer match the size of the paper loaded. Incorrectly set

paper guides may cause frequent paper jams. (Adjust Paper Drawer to Hold the Correct Paper Size)

Cause The paper used is not suitable for the machine.

Remedy Make sure that the paper used meets the paper requirements.

Set Machine up for the correct paper, Special paper Mode may reduce the frequency of paper curls and

jams.

Remedy: Check for unsuitable paper conditions.

Do not use severely curled or wrinkled paper.

Cause Paper is preprinted.

Remedy If you are printing on the back side of printed paper, Choose correct paper mode (preprinted paper)

Avoid using paper on which color images have been copied, or paper which has been printed on using a

thermal transfer printer (or the reverse side of such paper).

The machine does not become operational after all the jammed paper has

been removed.

Cause At least one of the covers is left open.

Remedy Close all the open covers and return all the levers to their original position.

Insert each paper drawer as far as it will go.

Cause The machine's platen glass/cover is dirty.

Remedy Clean the platen glass and cover.

Cause The feeder scanning area is dirty.

Remedy Clean the slit glass and feeder scanning area.

Black streaks appear on prints.

Cause Fixing unit, or drum is dirty.

Remedy If machine has a Drum, Dev or Fuser Refresh option run the refresh cycles.

NOTE

To attempt solving the above problem, start with a dev refresh followed by the fixing unit, and

then the drum.

If the problem persists even after cleaning all of the above parts, contact your local authorized

Canon dealer.

Print density is irregular.

Cause The machine's transfer output is not appropriate for the paper used.

Remedy Depending on device, use special modes or select the correct media type. These mode’s enables

you to select the machine's transfer output from three levels.

Cause The machine's print speed is too high for the media used.

Remedy Depending on device, use special modes or select the correct media type, These mode’s

improves print quality by reducing the machine's print speed, thus allowing more time for the toner

to become fixed on the paper.

Dots, lines, or stains appear on prints.

Cause The machine's platen glass/cover is dirty.

Remedy Clean the platen glass and cover.

Cause The feeder scanning area is dirty.

Remedy Clean the feeder scanning area.

Depending on device, use the Auto Adjustment for Dirty Feeder mode. This mode prevents dirt

Page4of39

and grime in the feeder from appearing on your copies and prints.

Images are obliquely printed.

Cause The original or paper placed is not aligned to the appropriate guides or edges.

Remedy Make sure that the original and paper are placed properly.

The backside of the prints is smudged.

Cause The transfer roller is dirty.

Remedy Clean the transfer roller.

Toner smudges or bleeds easily on prints.

Cause In a high-humidity environment, excessive moisture inside the machine may cause toner to

smudge or bleed on prints.

Remedy Depending on device, switch on special mode designed to prevent excessive moisture inside

the machine from adversely affecting prints.

Other Problems.

Staples are jammed.

Cause Staples are jammed in the finisher.

Remedy Remove the jammed staples from the finisher.

Prints are not delivered to the correct paper output tray.

Cause The functions for required tray, has not been selected.

Remedy Select the desired output for required Tray . The prints for the selected functions are delivered to

the correct paper output tray.
