Introduction
Functions and Features
The Crestron rechargeable battery pack, ST-BTPN, is designed to supply
power to Crestron ST and STX Series (1550C and 1700C) wireless
touchpanels. The ST-BTPN offers the touchpanel user the freedom to
roam without being confined to a stationary power source (i.e., external
battery pack or docking station). The ST-BTPN can be charged when it is
mounted on the ST-DSN docking station. The ST-BTPN can also be
charged when mounted on the older ST-DS docking station.

DSN and ST-DS Operations Guides (Doc. 6095 and Doc. 5738,

NOTE: The battery will not charge when above maximum charging
temperature. To cool the battery, either turn off power to the touchpanel
by pressing the power down button on the touchscreen (or use the power
down timeout), or remove the battery from the touchpanel (refer to
“Removal” on page 8). The battery can also be mounted on the docking
station to cool and then charge. The docking station begins charging the
battery once the battery has cooled.
Physical Description
The ST-BTPN (refer to illustrations below and on the next page) is
housed in a black plastic enclosure with its electrical contacts on the top
and bottom of the unit.

Handling
NOTE: The ST-BTPN contains a NiMH battery. When the unit can no
longer retain a charge, it must be recycled or disposed of properly. Refer
to the recycle label on the unit for disposal information.
To prevent short-circuiting, use care when handling the ST-BTPN.
NiMH cells have extremely low internal resistance and will discharge at
high current levels when shorted. As a result, the high temperatures can
damage the rechargeable battery pack and may cause personal injury.
Avoid accidental shorting from uninsulated workbenches, tools,
bracelets, rings, and coins.
Storage
The ST-BTPN can be stored in a temperate dry place (removed from the
touchpanel and docking station) indefinitely without significant
irreversible degradation in its performance. The self-discharge rate is a
function of temperature and internal resistance. High temperature storage
reduces charge retention. Best results occur if the ST-BTPN is stored at
an optimal temperature of 32°to 104°F (0°to 40°C). After an extended
storage, initiate a few charge/discharge cycles to restore full capacity.
Recharge the ST-BTPN after storage prior to use.

Charging
NOTE: Typically, the battery pack is good for 500 charge/discharge
cycles.
To charge the ST-BTPN:
• Use the powered ST-DSN docking station with battery guide; or
• Install the ST-BTPN in a ST-1550C or 1700C and mount
touchpanel on a powered ST-DSN docking station.
CAUTION: Internal damage to battery pack may occur if it is mounted
by itself on the ST-DSN without the battery guide.
NOTE: The battery pack may take up to 6 hours to charge in a powered
touchpanel. Refer to Specifications on page 2 for charging information.

Installation
The unique design of the ST-BTPN prevents it from being installed
improperly. The rechargeable battery pack fits only one way in the
battery compartment of the touchpanel.
Although the ST-BTPN can be installed in several Crestron wireless
touchpanel models, the ST-1700C and STX-1700C are the most common
models to use the battery pack. These models have the same shape and
battery compartment location. Therefore, as an example, the illustration
on the next page shows the ST-BTPN properly seated in the ST-1700C.
