Physical Setup
1. Set up the projector (power, input,…) according to the projector manufacturer’s specification. Make sure that the projector has
RS232 communication enabled, and write down the serial settings of the projector – these will be needed later for
configuration. Please consult the projector manual for the default settings if these settings can not be found in the projector’s
on-screen menus.
2. Connect the USB to RS232 adapter: plug in the RS232 connector (6) to the projector’s serial (in) port and the USB connector
(5) to any of the USB ports (4) of the control unit.
3. Connect the AC adapter: plug in the Micro USB connector (7) into the control unit’s Micro USB power socket (2) and connect
the power socket connector (8) to a power socket. Flip the power switch to turn the control unit on, this will take a few seconds.
4. (optional) For Ethernet connectivity, plug in a CAT5/6 cable into the RJ45 jack (3) of the control unit and connect it to your
network infrastructure.
To ensure correct operation of JCD, please make sure that you follow the guidelines listed below:
- DO NOT use an AC adapter other than the one supplied
- DO NOT use a USB to RS232 converter other than the one supplied
- DO NOT unplug the AC adapter before the system has been safely shut down via the web interface
- DO NOT unplug the USB to RS232 converter during operation
- DO NOT open the control unit or any of the other supplied parts, there are no serviceable parts inside
- DO NOT alter or modify any of the supplied parts
- DO NOT connect any device other to the control unit other than the supplied parts and projectors (and USB pen drives in case
you need to update)
- DO NOT update a working system unless necessary
- DO NOT use old or outdated browsers to access the web interface – JCD has been tested with Google Chrome and Mozilla
Firefox – other browsers will probably work but your mileage may vary)

Network Access
Communication with the control unit is possible via both Ethernet and Wi-Fi. The device acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot, you should be able to
find a network named “JCD-xxxxxxxx” with “xxxxxxxx” being a combination of numbers and letters. The exact SSID as well as the
WPA key can be found on a sticker on the control unit itself. The default IP address of the Wi-Fi hotspot is 192.168.1.1.
The default IP address of the Ethernet device is 2.0.0.20 (netmask 255.0.0.0), which can be changed via the web interface (see below).
If you want to use the default IP address, you have to change the network settings of your communicating devices accordingly.

Web Interface
Once you have established network access, enter the default IP address (192.168.1.1 for Wi-Fi; 2.0.0.20 for Ethernet) in a browser of
your choice. The JCD splash screen should appear, click on the logo to enter the web interface.
The web interface is divided into several tabs:
- “Welcome & Help” – JCD manual
- “Basic System Control” – access to basic commands
- “Focus & Zoom Control” – main lens control interface
- “System Setup & Calibration” – system configuration and lens calibration
- “Sysinfo & Log” – internal system information and ArtNet/DMX log

JCD Status
In the upper right corner, the web interface provides the system status, which will be refreshed every second. On successful setup,
the system should be in the “IDLE” state, meaning that JCD is ready and waiting to accept commands.
If the status is “ERROR” instead, the USB to RS232 converter is not connected to the control unit. Plug in the USB to RS232 converter
and the status should change to “IDLE”. If you unplug the USB to RS232 converter again, the status will switch back to “ERROR” instead.
If you encounter the “FAIL” status, please contact Dynamic Projection Institute and attach the information from the “Sysinfo” section
on the “Sysinfo & Log” tab!

JCD Configuration - Projector
In order to be able to interact with the projector, JCD needs to be configured with the serial connection settings. Switch to the
“System Setup & Calibration” tab and open the “JCD Config” section.
The system is able to detect these settings automatically, click on the “Press to start autodetection...” button to start the detection.
The autodetection will take some time, information about the progress will be displayed below the button. When the process is
complete, the message “Probing finished.” will appear, and the detected settings for projector class, serial device, serial baudrate and
serial parity will be displayed below the message “Found projector!”. Copy these into the input fields on the left side and click on the
“Save Config...” button to save the configuration. A confirmation is required to prevent accidental overwriting of the current settings.
NOTE: In some cases, you may have to modify the “Serial delay” option to reflect the time for one lens step / before the
projector can accept the next command. Please consult the manual of the projector for further information.
