About this guide
HP mc-Series 5042 Rack options installation guide
This installation guide includes instructions for installing the option kits that are compatible with the HP
mc-Series 5042 Rack.

Safety information
The HP mc-Series 5042 Rack is tested to the maximum pressure (PS) of 8 bar (116 PSI) without fluid trapped
inside by closed, external valves.
If valves are installed on the external pipe work that might trap fluid inside the MCS 5042 rack, you must take
special precautions. To prevent severe plumbing failure due to extreme pressure, use an expansion tank with
a preinstalled safety valve in the plumbing circuit connected to the unit.
Optimum environment and site preparation
CAUTION: Contaminated water might cause decreased cooling capacity or disruption in
service. The water flowing into the MCS 5042 unit must meet the guidelines stated in the HP
mc-Series 5042 Site Preparation Guide. The MCS 5042 warranty does not cover damage
caused by contaminated water.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin the installation process, review the HP mc-Series 5042 Site
Preparation Guide.
To provide optimum performance with minimum maintenance for your unit, environmental requirements must
be met.
The HP mc-Series 5042 Site Preparation Guide provides information about planning your unit configuration
efficiently and organizing your site location before delivery of your MCS 5042 unit.

To route water lines to your MCS 5042 unit, use one of the following methods:
•Through an opening in the raised floor

HP provides several option kits to complement or complete your MCS 5042 rack. For more information about
ordering MCS 5042 options, see the HP website, or contact your nearest HP authorized reseller.

Enables the rack doors to open automatically to maintain
air flow and cooling to the servers in the event of an
emergency.

height and depth to the MCS 5042, enabling the cooling
of both racks.

Automatic Door Release Kit
Overview
The HP mc-Series 5042 is designed with a safety mechanism in the event that the HP mc-Series 5042 Rack
experiences a chilled water system pressure or cooling loss. If the MCS 5042 rack experiences such a loss,
the electromagnetic locks on the front and rear doors immediately deactivate. Release springs open the rack
doors and allow air flow and cooling from the room to reach the servers in the rack.
