Setting up the 300x NoTouch System

See Installation and Quick Start Guide for detailed installation instructions. Before you get started,

make sure there is adequate table space for the printing system, including full clearance for the rail

system’s extended position. The base plate measures 16”x31” and requires an additional 18” of

clearance on the right side. Make sure you are near a power outlet, keeping in mind that both the

printer and the Tower require power. If printing over a network, make sure there is a network outlet for

the printer and the computer. Continuous label printing is not supported over a wireless network.

STOP AND CHECK

•Adequate Table Space: Minimum 18” deep x 36” wide with extra clearance on

the right side, plus any space you will need to set up a computer.

•Power Outlets: For printer and Tower.

•Network Connection: If needed.

Set Up the System:

STEP 1. Place Base Plate on the table or desk where the printing system will reside.

•Position the Base Plate so the Tower is installed on the right side.

•Be sure rails glide smoothly and are not obstructed.

SETP 2. Attach the Tower to the Base Plate using the included screws and a Philips screwdriver. The

holes in the Tower base will insert into standoffs on the Base Plate for alignment.

STEP 3. Place the Datum Guide on the back rail with the round spacer closer to the back. The Datum is a

small black guide that attaches to the rails and slides into a slot on the bottom of the printer.

STEP 4. Place 300x Printer on the rails, making sure the Datum Guide inserts into the printer slot. Two

people may be needed to properly lift and position the printer. When properly set up, the

printer will fit snuggly on the rails and will be held in place by the Datum.

STOP AND CHECK

•The Tower is snug on the base and securely attached.

•The Base Plate is on a sturdy table with plenty of clearance on either side.

•The Printer fits snugly on the rails with no twisting motion.

•The Printer glides smoothly on the railing system to a fully extended position.

STEP 5. Plug in all sensors and cables.

•Plug NoTouch power cable into Tower and outlet.

•Plug NoTouch Unwinder Sensor Connector into Tower.

•Plug NoTouch Rewinder Sensor Connector into Tower, and clip the Sensor to the printer media

exit.

•Plug in the 300x Printer. (Printer startup instructions are provided separately.)

•Plug the 300x Printer into your printing computer via a USB or network cable.

NOTE: There is no direct electrical, power, or control connection from the NoTouch unit and the printer.

STOP AND CHECK

•All Cables are plugged in as shown.

•NoTouch Power remains OFF.

STEP 6. Test the NoTouch System. Turn the Power ON and watch for the following behavior:

•The LED will flash a two-digit version number and then will turn solid green.

•The Unwinder and Rewinder will both start to turn. The Unwinder will spin for about 6 seconds,

and the Rewinder will spin for about 11 seconds.

•If the LED turns red, or if either winder does not spin, the system has not properly initialized.

Check all connections.

•Turn the Power back OFF to move to the next step.

STEP 7. Attach the rear stationary flanges, if not already attached.

The rear stationary flanges should be used for media that is exactly 8.5” in width. If you will never use

this size media, this step may be skipped; however, installing these flanges is recommended so they are

not misplaced or lost.

Complete the following steps for both the Unwinder and the Rewinder.

•Make sure the Power is OFF.

•Using the included Alan key, loosen two set screws on the winder spindle.

•Slide the spindle out about an inch.

•Snap the rear stationary flange onto the spindle, making sure the grooved side that matches the

3-edge chuck is facing out.

•Slide the spindle back into place, matching it to the flange grooves.

•Retighten two set screws until just snug.

NOTE: The set screws tighten into a flat area on the spindle. When resetting, make sure the set screws

remain on the flat part.

STEP 8. Attach the adjustable flanges.

Both the Rewinder and Unwinder have two adjustable flanges that allow you to align the media with the

300x Printer. In the case of an 8.5”wide roll, only one adjustable flange is used. The adjustable flanges

have a locking mechanism that holds them in place. This is found on the back of the flange.

The two adjustable flanges must be placed on the spindle so that the flat side faces the media. They

must be unlocked to slide on the spindle or chuck. The chuck must also be contracted by turning the

spindle knob counter clockwise to loosen it so that the flanges and media can be loaded. Once the

flanges and media are loaded, the user must tighten and expand the chuck fins by turning the spindle

knob clockwise.

Follow these steps and practice working with the flanges:

STEP 1. Place the first flange on the spindle, making sure the flat side faces out towards the media.

STEP 2. Move the flange to the desired location and latch it shut.

STEP 3. Place a roll of media or an empty core on the spindle or skip this step if you are practicing.

STEP 4. Place the second flange on the spindle, making sure the flat side faces in towards the media or

core.

STEP 5. Move the flange to the desired location and latch it shut.

STEP 6. Now turn the spindle knob clockwise until the chuck has expanded enough so that the system

does not slip.

TIP: If you have trouble sliding the flange onto the chuck, loosen more and/or squeeze the chuck fins

to contract the chuck.

•Make sure the flanges are straight when placing them. If they are not

straight, you might have trouble sliding them onto the chuck.

•Make sure the flanges are straight when you latch them. If they are not

straight, the media may rub against the side of the flange when printing.

•Make sure the NoTouch Power remains OFF during this step.

Loading Media onto the NoTouch

IMPORTANT: The NoTouch unit must be turned OFF whenever you are loading media. The NoTouch

uses gesture sensors to control the turning motors. When properly webbed, these motors are actuated

by media movement. However, other items may actuate the motors, such as a waving hand, a stray

cable, or a piece of paper. For this reason, the NoTouch unit should always be turned off when loading

and unloading media. The printer itself may remain powered on.

LOAD THE MEDIA ONTO THE UNWINDER

The media roll should be placed on the Unwinder so that the printed side will enter the printer facing

down. If the roll is the maximum 8.5”in width, the rear flange should be used, along with one

adjustable flange. For narrower rolls, two adjustable flanges will be needed. Note that if the roll is

slightly narrower than 8.5” (for example, 8.25”), it might be necessary to remove the rear flange to

make the media fit in the correct position.

For rolls that are 8”and narrower, the two adjustable flanges should be used. These flanges slide along

the chuck and are then locked into place so that the media is aligned with the printer.

STEP 1. Move the 300x Printer on the rails to the farthest position away from the roll unit. You will

need this space to work.

STEP 2. If the roll is 8.5”wide, use the rear flange. If the roll is smaller, place one adjustable flange on

the chuck so that the smooth side faces the media.

STEP 3. Place the media on the chuck so that the printed side faces down and

also toward the unwinding sensor, as shown.

STEP 4. Place the second adjustable flange on the chuck so that the smooth

side faces the media, and place the second flange such that the two

flanges do not align. Aligning the flanges may add unnecessary drag to

the media.

STEP 5. Align the media to the printer guides. Temporarily slide the printer close to the roll unit so that

you can correctly align the media. Adjust the gray printer guides so they fit the media width.

Then move the roll and flanges so that the entire system is aligned. Once aligned, lock the

flanges into place using the latch on the side of the flange facing away from the media.

STEP 5. Tighten the core. Once the media and flanges are in place, turn the chuck clockwise just until

the core is snug on the chuck. The system will not function properly if the core is not tightened.

LOAD AN EMPTY CORE ONTO THE REWINDER

Make sure the core you place on the Rewinder is the correct size for your media. Core sizes are often

not exact.

STEP 1. Place the empty core and flange(s) on the Rewinder chuck in the same way

you placed the media on the Unwinder chuck. The flat side of the flanges

face the core. The locking mechanisms face out. It is recommended that

you place the flange such that the two flanges do not align. Aligning the

flanges may add unnecessary drag to the media.

STEP 2. Align the Rewinder flanges with the Unwinder flanges. Even if the roll is 8.5”in width, you must

make sure the outer flanges are aligned. Once aligned, lock the flanges into place using the latch

on the side of the flange facing away from the media.

STEP 3. Tighten the core. Once the core and flanges are in place, tighten the core by turning the chuck

clockwise. The system will not function properly if the core is not tightened. If the system runs

and the core is loose on the chuck, the Rewinder will spin without winding up the media.

STOP AND CHECK

•Make sure the flanges are aligned. Take the leading edge of the media and

temporarily place it around the Rewinder core to verify that the Unwinder

and Rewinder flanges match.

•Make sure the Rewinder is not too tight. Remember that the empty core

may be slightly larger or smaller than the media core. Do not align the

flanges to the empty core; rather, make sure the upper and lower flanges

match. A ruler or straight edge can be used to check the alignment.

•Make sure the cores are snug on the chucks.

•Make sure the NoTouch Power remains OFF during this step.
