Nikon COOLPIX cameras are designed to the highest standards and include complex electronic

circuitry. Only Nikon brand electronic accessories (including battery chargers, batteries, AC

adapters, and Speedlights) certified by Nikon specifically for use with this Nikon digital camera

are engineered and proven to operate within the operational and safety requirements of this

electronic circuitry.

THE USE OF NON-NIKON ELECTRONIC ACCESSORIES COULD DAMAGE THE CAMERA AND

MAY VOID YOUR NIKON WARRANTY. The use of third-party rechargeable Li-ion batteries not

approved by Nikon could interfere with normal operation of the camera or result in the batteries

overheating, igniting, rupturing, or leaking.

•This guide will abbreviate the COOLPIX7900/COOLPIX5900 product name to E7900/E5900.

Take Pictures

Charge the battery

Connect the power cable to the MH-61 battery charger ( ) and in-

sert the wall plug into a power outlet ( ). The CHARGE lamp will

light ( ).

Remove the terminal cover from

EN-EL5 and insert the battery

into the MH-61, making sure

that the small projection on the

battery is inserted into the

matching pit on the charger.

Charging will begin immediate-

ly.

The CHARGE lamp will start to

blink.

Charging is complete when the

CHARGE lamp stops blinking.

About two hours are required

to charge a fully depleted

battery.

Attach the camera strap

Insert the battery

Read Battery Warnings

Read and follow the battery warnings and notices on pages i - v and

140 in the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography, together with any

warnings and instructions supplied by the battery manufacturer.

Attach the camera strap securely to the eyelet on the camera body as shown

below.

Open the Battery-chamber Cover

•Slide the cover in the direc-

tion shown in ( ) until it

stops and open the cover

().

Turn the camera on

Insert the battery

•Insert the battery as shown in the label at the

entrance to the battery chamber, making sure

the positive “+” and negative “–” terminals

are in the correct orientation. The small pro-

jection on the EN-EL5 battery is on the same

side as the negative terminal.

Inserting the battery upside down or

backwards could damage the camera.

Check to be sure the battery is in the correct

orientation.

•The orange battery latch is pushed aside as the

battery is inserted. The latch will close when

the battery is fully inserted.

Close the Battery-chamber Cover

•Close the cover ( ) and slide it in until it

latches ( ).

•Ensure the cover is closed firmly.

Choose a language and set the

clock

The first time the camera is turned on, a language-selection dialog will be dis-

played in the monitor. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set

the time and date.

Turn the camera on

Auto Power Off (Standby Mode)

If no operations are performed for one minute (default setting), the monitor will

turn off automatically and the camera will enter standby mode to reduce the drain

on the battery. The camera will be reactivated from standby mode when you:

•Press the Power Switch

•Press the Shutter-release Button halfway

Move cursor up.

(Simplified Chinese),

(Traditional Chinese) or (Korean),

and press .

Confirmation dialog displayed.

Highlight Yes.

* To turn daylight saving time on or off,

press to highlight DaylightSaving

and press . When DaylightSaving

is checked, time will automatically be

advanced one hour. To return to Step

, press to highlight current time

zone.

TIME ZONE menu displayed.*

Display map of world time zones. Select home time zone.

Display DATE menu. Edit Day (order of Day, Month, and

Year may differ in some areas).

Storing Pictures

Pictures will be stored in the camera’s internal memory (capacity: about

13.5MB) unless a Secure Digital (SD) memory card is inserted in the camera,

in which case pictures will be stored on the card. For information on insert-

ing a memory card, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography (see pages

12 - 13).

Ready the camera.

•Hold the camera steadily with both hands.

Don’t Block the Shot

To avoid dark or partially obscured pictures, keep your fingers and

other objects away from the lens, flash window, AF-assist Illuminator,

and microphone.

Frame the subject.

•Frame the subject in the center of the monitor.

•Pictures can be framed in the monitor or the viewfinder.

Zoom Buttons

Press

to zoom in on your subject so that it fills

a larger area of the frame.

Press

to zoom out, increasing the area visible

in the frame.

Focus.

•Press the Shutter-release Button halfway to set focus and exposure.

With the Shutter-release Button pressed halfway, check Red ( )

Lamp, Green (AF) Lamp, focus area, and focus indicator:

Take the picture.

•Press the Shutter-release Button the rest of the way down to

take the picture.

•To prevent blur, press the Shutter-release Button down

smoothly.

The camera automatically se-

lects a focus area containing

the subject closest to the cam-

era from five focus areas (de-

fault setting in auto shooting

mode). Focus area will appear

when the Shutter-release But-

ton is pressed halfway. The

selected focus area will be dis-

played in green when the

subject is in focus.

Red ( ) Lamp

On Flash will fire when picture is taken.

Blinks Flash charging.

Off Flash off or not required.

Green (AF) Lamp/focus area and focus indicator

On: green/green Subject in focus.

Blinks: green/red Camera unable to focus on subject. Recompose the

picture and try again.

The E7900/E5900 has a two-stage Shutter-release Button. Pressing

the Shutter-release Button halfway focuses the camera. Pressing the

rest of the way down releases the shutter to record a picture.
