PART 104356-105 -Exchange a REO 9000 Chassis

Exchanging a REO 9000 Chassis

Overland Storage recommends that this part be installed by an Overland Storage-authorized

service provider. Improper installation might result in damage to this part or the appliance,

which will void the current warranty.

Important: A spare chassis ships without an IDE Flash installed. You must remove the IDE Flash from the

unit being replaced and transfer it to the new REO chassis.

Preparing the Old Chassis

1On your current appliance that is using the old chassis, make sure that none of the initiators (servers)

have active connections with the appliance.

2In the REO GUI, click Maintenance, click Shut Down, click OK to continue; wait one minute, and then

make sure that the appliance has shut down (all lights are off).

3Remove the REO SoftKey from the appliance, back up the contents of the key to a safe location on your

network, and set the key aside.

4Disconnect the AC line cords from the power mains, unplug all connections, and label them so that you

can attach the new chassis using the same connection configuration.

Caution: Extending a unit that has empty spaces beneath it might cause the rack to tip forward or might

cause personal injury. Overland Storage strongly recommends that two people support and slide the unit

in the rack.

5Remove the power-supplies from the old chassis.

aOn the back of the old chassis, loosen the knurled thumbscrew for each power supply.

bSlide the release latch to the left, pull out the hinged extraction handle, and use the handle to pull the

power supplies out of the appliance.

6Remove the disk carriers from the old chassis.

aOn the old chassis, loosen the two thumb-screws on the front-panel face-plate, and lower the face-plate

(you must remove the face-plate to access the disks at the bottom of the chassis).

bRemove each disk carrier by pressing the button on the front of the carrier and using the lever to pull

the carrier out of the slot.

Warning: To avoid loss of data, you must move each disk carrier to the same slot in the new chassis.

Figure 1. Remove disk carrier.

7Remove the appliance from the rack by extending the slide rails and then releasing the slide locks.

PART 104356-105 -Exchange a REO 9000 Chassis

Exchanging the New Chassis for the Old

1Remove the top cover of the chassis.

aRemove the eight screws and place them carefully to the side; use extreme caution to avoid dropping

any of the screws into the appliance.

bLift the cover directly off the appliance and set it aside until you are ready to replace it.

2If you are using the Fibre Channel (FC)-enabled version of the appliance, complete the following steps to

remove the FC card and transfer it to the new chassis; otherwise, proceed to Step 3.

Important: Follow electrostatic discharge (ESD) protocol when handling and replacing the card.

aTo provide additional clearance for removal of the card, remove the dual single-form-factor-optical

(SFFO) connectors by extending the port levers on the dual SFFO connections, and using the port

levers, carefully pulling the connectors away from the card.

bRemove the single screw from the FC-card mounting bracket, remove the FC card carefully, and set

the screw aside until you are ready to use it in Step d.

Figure 2. Remove this screw from the mounting bracket.

cInstall the FC card into the new chassis by aligning it with the port opening in the back panel of the

new chassis and connecting the card to the motherboard.

dUsing the screw from Step b, attach the FC-card mounting bracket to the back panel.

eReplace the FC SFFO connectors in the FC card in the reverse manner as described in Step a.

3Complete the following steps to remove the IDE Flash disk and transfer it to the new chassis.

Important: Follow electrostatic discharge (ESD) protocol when handling and replacing the card.

aGrasp the IDE Flash disk on both edges and gently rock the module back and forth until it dislodges

from its slot on the motherboard.

bUnplug the small-form power connector from the IDE Flash disk.

Figure 5. Unplug the power connector from the IDE Flash disk.

cMove the IDE Flash disk to the new chassis and plug in the small-form power connector to the module.

Figure 6. Plug in the power connector on the new chassis.

dInsert the IDE Flash disk into the new chassis by gently rocking it back and forth into the IDE Master

slot (black) on the motherboard.

Figure 7. Insert the IDE Flash disk into the new chassis.

4Place the top cover back onto the appliance, and secure it using the eight screws removed previously in

Step 1.

5Remove the inner slide-rail from the exterior of the old chassis and attach it to the new chassis.

6Locate the 103nnn-nnn number on the old chassis, and record this nine-digit number on the label on the

new chassis.

7Install the appliance (which now uses the new chassis) in the rack by inserting the chassis in the slide

rails, and attach the front-panel face-plate.

8Insert the power-supplies from the old chassis into the new chassis.

aSlide each power supply into an empty slot on the back of the new chassis, and press the power supply

firmly until the release latch locks it into place.

bTighten the thumbscrew.

cPress the hinged extraction handle over to fold it out of the way.

9Insert each disk carrier from the old chassis into the same slot in the new chassis. Make sure that the

lever is in its fully extended, open position. Press the right side of the carrier into the slot, and then press

the lever in. Pressing the lever in draws the carrier fully into the slot and locks it in place.

Warning: To avoid loss of data, you must move a disk carrier to the same slot in the new chassis.

10 Connect the new chassis to your network using the same configuration that you used for the old chassis,

and connect the AC line cords to the power mains.

11 Determine the version that the existing REO is running. If you don’t already know, examine the directory

structure of the USB Softkey backup you just performed in the beginning of this procedure.

aIf the REO version is 2.2.0.xxx or earlier, delete the file /var/Overland/ovlndp on the USB key.

bIf the REO version is 2.4.0.xxx or earlier, delete the file /cfg/ovlndp on the USB key.

cIf the REO version is 2.5.0.xxx or later you don’t need to do anything.

12 Insert the REO SoftKey into a USB port on the new chassis.

13 Turn the replacement appliance on by pressing and holding the power button for approximately 1 second.

14 Wait for several minutes for the REO Appliance to complete its startup procedure, and then login to the

appliance. Check the Maintenance page in the GUI to ensure that the system now contains the version

of the software that you intend to use. If this appliance functions as the Central Appliance in a Multisite

PAC configuration, contact Overland Technical Support to receive a new Multisite PAC license via the

Maintenance page.

15 Pack the old chassis in the shipping container that held the new chassis, and return the package to

Overland Storage per the instructions you received.
