This manual uses some generally accepted conventions for clarity and accuracy. These include:
• The use of an ‘H’ suffix before a number indicates hexadecimal (base sixteen) notation.
• The use of a ‘-’ (minus) suffix to a signal name indicates an active low signal. The signal is either
true when it is at a logic zero level or the signal initiates actions on a high-to-low transition.
• Text in Courier Font indicates a command entry or output from an SBS embedded PC product
using its built-in character set.
This manual is designed to provide information regarding the general use and application of the V5C
Embedded PC, as well as detail the hardware design. Some software programming information is also
provided in Chapters 6 and 7 of this manual.

This chapter describes the features, capabilities and compatibilities of the V5C.
The V5C Embedded PC is compatible with software written compliant with the
PC99 Design Guide. All of the functions necessary for operation as a Pentium
based computer are included. There are also a number of features provided on
board which usually require plug-in cards in a desktop Pentium computer. The
following paragraphs describe features which relate to the V5C PC99 functionality.
Intel Pentium III Microprocessors
The V5C is available from the factory with an Intel Pentium III or Celeron processor
at a variety of speeds. Celeron processors of 450MHz and up, and Pentium III
processors of 450MHz and up (as available) are currently supported. The
Celeron has a 66MHz front side bus, and the Pentium III has a 100MHz front
side bus. Each processor will run standard software written in compliance with
the PC99 Design Guide. They provide the capability of running 8-bit (8086),
16-bit (80286), as well as full 32-bit (80386) software & operating systems, and
support MMX technology. This choice of processors allows you to select a V5C
with the performance best suited to your application.
