Gin Wheel Safety
WARNING: Protective headgear (e.g. hard hat) and protective footwear, MUST be worn by the
operator, and any person near to the danger area.
WARNING: Create a generous EXCLUSION ZONE around the lifting mechanism using barriers
and warning signs. When an object is being lifted, the areas directly below and around the area
should be considered highly dangerous. Do not reach into, or enter this area.Keep children, animals
and bystanders away from the lifting area.
IMPORTANT: Lifting equipment should be inspected by a qualied person at least once each
year. The results of the inspection recorded in an inspection book for future reference.Examination
frequency should be related to the frequency of use.
IMPORTANT: Read these instructions in combination with any instructions provided with additional
parts required for lifting including rope, cargo straps and slings.
Danger area
• Lifting equipment must be operated from a position where the operator is not at risk from
a falling load. The operator should not be positioned directly below the load
• Never use a lifting tool or any other overhead lifting equipment for lifting persons
Inspect the equipment
• Before use, check the condition of the equipment, paying particular attention to ropes
and locking mechanisms. Ropes should be free from kinks and should not show any evidence
of fraying or cutting. Locking mechanisms should work freely and should be clean of excessive
dirt or grease.
• Any additional supports should be capable of taking the full weight of the object to be
lifted, along with some additional capacity as a precautionary measure
• Check that the hooks are sound. If a hook has more than a 10° twist out of true, or has an
excessive throat opening,it should be replaced
• Check all hook safety latches are not damaged or bent and completely seal the hook
openings
• If any part of the lifting equipment is found to be damaged or worn, it must be repaired
with genuine replacement parts at an authorised service centre before the equipment is
used
• Do not modify any lifting equipment. Any attempt to tamper with this equipment will
invalidate its guarantee and could result in serious injury to yourself or others around you
Attaching a load
• Any load must only be attached/supported by the proper lifting points
• Only use a gin wheel with a working safety catch on the lifting hook
• The load must be free to lift.If the load is caught or restricted during lifting it may become
unbalanced or loose and create a safety issue
• Before attaching a load, ensure that it is stable, and will remain stable throughout the
lifting process
During a lift
• The operator should have constant eye contact with the load. If it is impractical for the
operator to have constant eye contact, then the danger area should be sealed off, and additional
persons with full view of the operating area must be used to relay instructions to the operator
• Lifting equipment must only be operated by persons who are clearly familiar with the
operating instructions
• Lifting equipment must never be used for any purpose other than vertical lifts
• Do not lift an object to a greater height than is absolutely necessary
• Workers receiving the load (at heights) must use proper fall protection
If you are in any way unsure about the safe method of using this equipment, DO NOT USE!

Product Familiarisation
Note: The product familiarisation images and list displays both the rope and a compatible gin wheel
(not supplied) for the purpose of comprehensive instructions. Both are required for safe lifting.
*Gin Wheel not included. Suitable for use with Silverline GinWheel Rope with Hook 20m x 18mm.
Intended Use
Manual lifting rope for use with a simple lifting mechanism designed to lift and lower light loads
vertically with the lifting operator placed at ground level and the load receiver placed at height.
Before Use
Installation
IMPORTANT: A site risk assessment may be required as part of your national regulations.
LOLER: Lifting Operations Lifting Equipment Regulations, 1998 in the UK.
Note: If using a third party gin wheel, follow the supplied instructions regarding assembly and
installation.
1. Locate the gin wheel in a suitable, well-lit work area
2. Mount the gin wheel on a safe work platform that is above the standing arm’s length of the
worker who will be receiving the load. The load itself should be received no higher than the
worker’s shoulder height
3. Ensure the gin wheel is suspended from a structure capable of supporting a load of at least 3x
the Safe Working Load (SWL).The supporting structure at the suspension point, Fig.II (1), must
be capable of taking the weight of the load, Fig. II (2),and the pulling force of the operator,Fig. II
(3), which is equivalent to the SWL.Consult an engineer if necessary
4. Make sure the Rope (7) used is the correct diameter for the size of the gin wheel and suitable for
the intended load to be lifted. See ‘Specication’
5. Minimise the distance between the gin wheel and the scaffolding, Fig. I (1)
6. Secure the Loop (1) with brackets either side so it will not move,Fig.I (2) and additional support
struts, Fig.I (3), for strength and rigidity if necessary
Checks before use
1. Check the Loop Securing Bolt (2), Pulley Securing Bolt (5) and Hook Securing Bolt (10) are tight
and in good condition. Check the Rope Eyelet (8) is secure
2. Check the Rope (7) is not worn or frayed. Remove from service if not in awless condition
3. Check the Pulley (4) wheel rotates freely. Place a label on the Pulley if necessary so it can be seen
from a distance that the wheel is rotating. Operating the Pulley without a freely rotating wheel
may damage the Rope
Operation
IMPORTANT: Restrict maximum loads to 1/5 of the lifting operators’ combined body weight. If two
or more workers are lifting the load, only one worker should be giving instructions.
1. To prevent side movement place the load directly below the pulley wheel directly in-line with the
vertical rope

2. Avoid snatch or shock loading as the safe working load can be exceeded in such circumstances.
Use gradual controlled pulling which maintains stability of the load
3. Always use gloves when working with a gin wheel to prevent rope burn. Check the gloves are
designed to grip well and do not have a smooth slippery gripping surface
4. Check the load does not exceed the weight capacity of the components or the ability of workers
to lift it
5. Check the load is secured properly. Never load the Lifting Hook (12) in front of the Safety Latch
(11) next to the hook tip. Never load the Lifting Hook off the central position and always ensure
the Lifting Hook’s Safety Latch is closed before lifting
6. Check the bucket or load won’t strike the scaffold or building, causing the load to tip and fall
7. When lifting, do not stand close to the area under the load. Instead, use the lifting rope at a
diagonal angle
8. When lifting liquid, cover the bucket so the contents don’t spill
IMPORTANT: Once the load is lifted to the required height, the load should be removed and the
empty Lifting Hook lowered to ground level immediately.
Note: It is recommended to do a test lift of a metre or so to check lifting stability to see if the load
securing can be improved especially at higher weight levels.
