1 GENERAL
The Basile 2600 Multifunction Printer is a microprocessor controlled device designed to
acquire COUNTING OR TIMING DATA OF SIX INDEPENDENT CHANNELS. The Data can be printed-
out on thermal paper in real time or saved in the internal memory be unload later on.
The 2600 Multifunction Printer is also provided with a RS232C connector, located on the
back panel, in order to route Data to PC in real time or to unload them later on. Basile
WIN-DAS software is required (IBM compatible, Windows 95 or 3.1).
This makes the 2600 be a REAL MULTI-PURPOSE FLEXIBLE INTERFACE between the
instruments linked to it and any IBM or compatible PC.
Each channel can acquire Data from instruments which supply a Counting or Timing TTL
signals such as : 7550 Passive Avoidance
6650 Hole Board
7370 Plantar Test
7360 Tail Flick
7250 Hot Plate
7600/50 Rota Rod for Mice (requires 5 channels)
7700/50 Rota Rod for Rats (requires 4 channels)
7402 Activity cages
7210 Analgesy-Meter (model provided with optical switch)
And a number of other Basile instruments or other makes.
The 2600 Data print-out represents Counting or Timing events. Counting may be suitable
for Hole Board, Activity cages, etc, Timing for Plantar Test, Hot Plate, Rota Rod, etc.
Countingmoderesultsareprinted-out at preset intervals, whereasTimingmoderesultscan

be set for single pulse or cumulative operation. Cumulative time interval are referred to a
preset interval.
The 2600 includes a Graphic display, a 4 button keyboard and the printer proper.
The Graphic display monitors all available commands settable by the operator by simply
acting on the 4 button keyboard located just below it.
A red push-button switch located on the left top of the front panel, if depressed, push the
chart a step forward.
1.1 CONNECTING AN INSTRUMENT TO THE SERIAL INPUT
Besides the described features, the RS232C input can accept signal from instruments
already provided with Serial connector like the Basile Plethysmometer 7140.
A data string, for instance of a 7140 linked to the 2600 Serial connector, is directly printed
on the paper with indication of the corresponding address of the instrument which
generates it.
This string does not interfere with any of the 6 available input channels which remain fully
operative.
Obviously, when the RS232C connector is used for linking another instrument (7140), the
PC communication can not be activated.
The instrument connected to theMultifunctionPrinterviatheRS232Cinput,inourcase the
Plethysmometer 7140, must be set in order to channel output Data to its Serial path (see
corresponding Instruction Manuals).

1.2 2600 INPUT CONNECTOR
Theinput 15 pin Delta connector for linking external TTL signals to the 2600 Multifunction
Printer is located on the rear panel of the unit.
The 2600 Multifunction Printer is generally purchased for specific instruments and it
comes already provided with suitable connection cables for these apparatus. In case the
researcher has to make out his/her own input connections, please pay attention to the
following considerations.
The TTL signal applied is active on the low level which corresponds to Zero Volt.
Tomake activated the 2600 ON input channels it is sufficient a make contact (short circuit)
between the corresponding channel connector pin and the Common. In this way, the
internal pull-up, stand-by at 5 Volt, drops to active TTL low level ( 0 Volt ).
Common = pin 1
Channel 1 = pin 10
Channel 2 = pin 3
Channel 3 = pin 11
Channel 4 = pin 4
Channel 5 = pin 12
Channel 6 = pin 5
VDD = Pin 9
Pin 9 is the positive 5 Volt (VDD) of the Multifuncion Printer power supply; be careful not to
short pin 1 (Common) and pin 9 (+5V) .
Positive 5 Volt may be useful to feed an external inverter in case an applied input signal is
operative on the high TTL level (level 1 = 5V) instead of Common level.

2 INSTALLATION OF THE 2600 MULTIFUNCTION PRINTER
Oncetheinstrumenthasbeenunpacked,checkthecompleteness of theshipment,packing
list to hand, and visually inspect the instrument parts soon.
If some part is damaged or, after having tested the complete assembled instrument, if fails
to meet the rated performances, notify our company immediately.
Before applying power, consider on the back side of the 2600 the Power Module which
includes the Mains Switch, the Fuse Holder, theVoltageSelectorantheInlet Connector of
the Mains Cord.
Pay particular attention to the Mains Voltage set and shown in the small flag of the Power
Module.
Before any operation of Fuse replacing or Mains Voltage modification Remove the Mains
Cord.
Make sure that only fuses with the required rated current and of the specified types are
used for replacement.
2.1 SWITCHING ON

Turn the Multifuncion Printer ON by acting on the Mains Switch placed on the back side of
the instrument, the software takes some seconds to perform a complete checking of any
electronic circuit, in the meantime a mice picture is monitored and then the display shows
the previous experiment setting.
The previous setting configuration, the Date and the Time are saved in the internal
memory of the microprocessor which is fed by a couple of watch type batteries.
In case the following message appears :
The two batteries are out of order; they must
be replaced (see page 21) and the Date and
the Time must be set again.
2.2 PAPER LOADING
Lift up the lid of the thermal paper receptacle (on the left side of the top panel) by lifting it
up.

Remove the run-out chart and bobbin.
Place a fresh roll into the Printer block with the sensitive side (shine side) down. Chart
shine side must be facing you once the paper comes out.
V-cut , with a pair of scissors, the beginning of the chart roll and insert it into the printer
narrow rectangular slot located at the back of the printer body.
With instrument ON, depress the red PAPER FEED push-button switch placed on the top
panel (left side) until the chart comes out.
Shut the lid. Exert care the paper pass through the rectangular slot located on the lid.
If printing does not take place, check that the paper roll has not been loaded upside down;
the thermal sensitive side is one only.
3 DISPLAY AND KEYBOARD
The Graphic display is located at the right side of the instrument and the keyboard is just
below it.

The keyboard consists of 4 soft push-button
switches marked F1, F2, F3 and F4.
The meaning of them depends on software
sub-routine in which we are working AND on
the display corresponding label just above its
key.
For instance, the F2 key, while in the Main
Menu is labelled FNC (Function menu), once
depressed, it acquires the meaning of CLK
(Clock). The clock is the software level where
the operator can set the Time and the Date.
The F4 key, in most cases, is labelled ESC (Escape); it enables the operator to abandon
a just set wrong selection or to leave the sub-routine in which he/she is working in order to
go back to the previous software level.
The display labels are, for obvious reasons, shortened. Please refer to the following list :

I-P Intermediate Printing
In almost any software menu, the intermediate display level, in the middle of the screen,
SHOWS THE LAST RECEIVED DATUM IN REAL TIME, no matter if it is saved in the memory only or
Printedand/orsenttoPC. ThisDatumiscompletedwiththeexperiment feature (sequence
number, sex, etc.) if preset.
3.1 MAIN MENU
The Main Menu shows the Ugo Basile logo and, at the bottom of it, the boxes referred to
the soft keys respectively labelled : OPR, FNC, MEM & ESC.
The F4 ESC key, if depressed more times while in the Main Menu, generates a loop
showing, in sequence : Basile release of the installed software, selected output path,
channelstatusand mode, Date & Time, real time Data in progress of each channel and the
mice picture.
The selected output path and the Channel status & mode are reported in the upper side of
the graphic display.
PRN and/or SER labels indicate that the corresponding output path has been set. PRN
means real time Data printing and SER means that the serial communication to PC has
been activated.
Please note that any received Datum may be printed in real time or not; in any case it is
saved in the internal microprocessor memory, able to store up to about 500 measurement
strings (each string includes Data and Time & Date indication).
Theactivatedchannelstatusisdisplayedfollowingpathindication(PRNand/orSER). The
small type letter at the foot of the channel labels indicate the mode setting : “t” means
Timer, “c” is Counter and “ct” means Cumulative Timer.
The Counting mode means to record the total number of events in a preset printing
interval (Hole Board, Activity Cage, etc). Timing mode means to record the duration of a
single pulse (Passive Avoidance, Plantar Test, etc). Cumulative Timer means the sum of
all the latencies occurred during the preset interval (many Behavioural experiments,
Cumulative Rota Rod trials, etc).
