Chemical Method Notes:
Method:
The sample is heated at 150oCfortwohoursinthepresenceofpotassiumdichromate,whichisa
strong oxidizing agent. Organic compounds in the sample are oxidized, reducing the dichromate ion
(Cr2O72–) to the green chromic ion (Cr3+).
IntheLowRange(LR)Test(0-150mg/L),theamountofremainingCr6+ is measured; In the
MidRange(MR)(0-1,500mg/L)or(HR)(0-15,000mg/L),theamountofCr3+ produced is
measured.Theresultsaremeasuredastheamountofoxygen(O2)consumedperliterof
water sample. The LR and MR test is displayed in mg/L while the HR test shows g/L.
TheCODreagentcontainsbothmercuryandsilver—themercurycontrolschloride
interferencesandthesilverfunctionsasacatalysttospeedthereaction.
Application:
Samplescanbemeasuredifthechloridecontentdoesnotexceed1,000mg/l(LR/MR)or10,000mg/l
(HR).
Inexceptionalcases,compoundscontainedinthewatercannotbeadequatelyoxidized.Thisresults
inlowreading,comparedwiththereferencemethod.
Differentmethodsofsampling,preparationofthesampleitselfandthetimeelapsedbetweentaking
thesampleandanalysiscanallaffecttheobtainedresults.

Preparing the Sample
Openareactionvialwithawhitecapandaddthespeciedvolume.
(Ensurethatappropriatepersonnelsafetyequipmentisused.)
LR-/MR: 2 ml water sample
HR: 0.2 ml water sample
Prepareablank(Note1)byusingdeionizedwater(TOC-free)insteadofthesample
(LR/MR: 2 ml, HR: 0.2 ml).
Replacethecaptightly.Invertthevialgentlyseveraltimestomixthecontents(Thevialwillbecome
hotduringmixing!)anddigestthevialsfor120minutesinthereactoratatemperatureof150°C.
Removethevialsfromthereactorandallowthemtocooldownto60°Corless.Mixthecontentsby
invertingeachvialseveraltimeswhilestillwarm.Thenallowthevialstocooltoambienttemperature
beforemeasuring.
Guidelines for photometric measurements
1. Runsamplesandblankswiththesamebatchofvials.
Theblankisstablewhenstoredinthedarkandcanbeusedforfurthermeasurementswithvials
fromthesamebatch.
2. Don‘tplacehotvialsintheadapter.Allowthevialstocooltoroomtemperaturefor
a minimum 45 minutes. It is recommended to leave the vials to cool over night.
3. Suspended solids in the vial lead to incorrect measurements. For this reason it is important to place
thevialscarefullyintheadapter.Theprecipitantatthebottomofthesampleshouldnotbe
suspended.
4. Cleantheoutsideofthevialswithatoweltoremovengerprintsorothermarks
.
5. Avoidspillageofwaterorreagentsolutionintothesamplechamberbecausethiscanleadtoincor-
rect test results.
6. Contaminationofthetransparentcellchambercanresultinincorrectreadings.Checkatregularin-
tervalsand–ifnecessary–cleanthetransparentcellchamberusingamoistclothorcottonswab.
7. Largetemperaturedifferencesbetweentheinstrumentandtheenvironmentcanleadtoerrors–
e.g.duetotheformationofcondensationinthecellchamberoronthevial.
8. Toavoiderrorscausedbystraylightdonotusetheinstrumentinbrightsunlight.

Turntheunitonusingthe[ON/OFF]key.

Toavoidunnecessaryscrollingfortherequiredtestrange,theinstrument
memorizes the last rangeusedbeforebeingturnedoff.Whentheinstrumentis
turned on again, the scroll list comes up with the last used test range.

Note: To print data, or to transmit to a PC, the optional Series 900 Data Hub(Inf-
raredInterfaceModule)isrequired.
The Series 900 Data Hubandtheconnectedprinter/PCmustbeready.Press
the[MODE]keytostartthetransmitting,theinstrumentdisplays“PrtG”(Printing)
forapprox.1secondfollowedbythenumberoftherstdatasetanditstransmis-
sion.Alldatasetswillbetransmittedoneaftertheother.Afternishingtheinstru-
ment returns to test mode.
Theprintjobcanbecancelledbypressingthe[On/Off]key.Theinstrumentturns
off.
IftheinstrumentisnotabletocommunicatewiththeIRiM,atimeoutoccursafter
approx.2minutes.TheerrorE132isdisplayedforapprox.4seconds.Subse-
quently, the instrument returns to test mode (see also IRiM manual).
