Adobe®Illustrator®CS2 12.0.1 Update

Adobe Systems Inc.

October 2005

TABLE OF CONTENTS

1. Important: Bounding Box Change as of CS2

2. Important: Installing on a dierent language OS than the installer

3. Issues addressed in the 12.0.1 update

(e original Adobe Illustrator CS2 Read me follows these three items)

1. IMPORTANT: BOUNDING BOX CHANGE AS OF CS2

Adobe Illustrator CS2 has made a signicant change in the way les appear in other applica-

tions when saved in Illustrator. e artboard (dened in the Document Setup dialog box, or

when you create a new le) will crop o anything that extends beyond it. Legacy les (created

in previous versions of Adobe Illustrator) are aected by this new behavior when you save that

legacy le in Adobe Illustrator CS2. If you have artwork that extends beyond the edge of your

artboard, either move the artwork so that it ts on the artboard or increase the size of the

artboard in the Document Setup dialog box. is was an intentional change in the way that

Illustrator saves les, and ensures compliancy with PDFX1a standards. is behavior is present

in both Adobe Illustrator CS2 and the 12.0.1 update, and will not be changed to the “old”

behavior in future versions of Adobe Illustrator.

2. IMPORTANT: INSTALLING ON A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE OS THAN THE INSTALLER

If you’re using a dierent OS language than the Illustrator CS2 12.0.1 updater (for example, a

French OS with an English language updater), this installer will not be able to nd any copy of

Illustrator CS2 that is located in a folder path that contains 2-byte (typically Japanese or Chi-

nese) or certain “high ASCII” characters, such as \, Æ, ß, Õ, Ç, Ñ or Ò. Be sure the folder(s)

containing the application have standard alphanumeric characters when installing.

3. ISSUES ADDRESSED IN THE 12.0.1 UPDATE

Many critical workow bugs and issues have been addressed in this update. Of note are the

following:

• Crash that could occur in the New Art dialog box has been xed

• Crash that could occur when a font is changed with the Glyph palette has been xed

• Crash that could occur when transforming large numbers of objects has been xed

• Copy/Paste bugs in the Graph dialog box have been xed

• A bug involving OS 10.4 Keyboard shortcuts have been xed

• Various Double-byte bugs have been xed

4. KNOWN ISSUES AND LIMITATIONS

is section describes specic issues, or limitations, in Illustrator CS2 that might be of interest

to our users. For the most up-to-date information on Illustrator, please visit the Illustrator

Support section of the Adobe Web site at www.adobe.com/support/products/illustrator.html.

Installation

When specifying a non-root drive or partition to install the application to, only the Adobe

Illustrator CS2 application will be installed on the non-root drive. Additional components as

well as the Adobe Bridge application will be installed on the root drive.

In addition to the above restriction, please note the following additional Installer issue that is

Mac Operating System 10.2.8 specic. Installation of Illustrator CS2 on a non-root drive or

partition will only work if that drive or partition already has a copy of a Mac OS 10.2.8 or

10.3.x installed on it.

Upon launching the Installer, please be aware that it may take a few seconds before the Launch

Screen allows you to move to the next step. During this interim period of time, it is normal for

all actions to be grayed out. Once the Installer is ready to let you proceed, the actions buttons

will ungray and let you proceed with the Installation.

Illustrator CS2 installs the Adobe SVG 3.02 Viewer. If you have an older version of the Viewer

on your system, just be aware that this installation will replace it with the 3.02 Viewer.

Take note that the uninstallation process on Windows, for non-English versions of Illustrator,

may leave specic les behind. ese can be found in the following folder

[startup drive]\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS2\Presets\Save for Web

Once the uninstallation has completed successfully, you can simply delete the ‘Adobe Illustrator

CS2’ folder to remove any remaining les.

Save-As vs. Export

Illustrator and EPS formats are once again accessible from the Save-As dialog. e legacy

versions are therefore no longer presented as Export options in the Export Dialog. However,

please be aware that saving an Illustrator CS2 le to an earlier Illustrator version may result in a

loss of editability when brought back into CS2. is is unavoidable if the CS2 le uses func-

tionality that did not exist in prior versions of Illustrator. Please read the warnings that are

presented in the dialog for a highlight of what may be aected.

Live Trace

We are very excited about the new Live Trace feature, which lets you convert Bitmap (Raster)

images to Vector form. One thing to keep in mind when working with Live Trace, particularly

when tracing high-resolution photographic (i.e. continuous tone) images, is that the feature

can require a signicant amount of memory and processing power in order to perform the

conversion. Several trace settings can signicantly reduce the complexity of the raster-to-vector

operation resulting in better performance and lower memory usage. Among these, you may

choose to experiment with increasing the amount of Blur, and the Minimum Regions lter;

and/or decreasing the Number of Colors used, and the Sampling Resolution to use on the

source image.

Loading PPDs

When attempting to choose a PPD via the “Other...” option in the PPD pop-up menu of the

print dialog, PPDs that have double-byte characters in their le name, or any part of their le

path, will produce an error alerting you that the PPD could not be loaded. To workaround this,

rename the PPD le to not use such characters, and/or move the PPD to a folder path which

doesn’t contain such characters, then retry the PPD selection.

Gaiji Creation Tool

is tool is only available in the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean versions of the Adobe®Creative

Suite

When making a character that has holes cut out from the middle of a shape, it is important to

use Illustrator’s Compound Paths feature instead of having one path for the outside shape and a

dierent path for the cut-out hole. If you don’t use Compound Paths, you may observe that the

hole in the middle gets lled in.

e Gaiji Creation Tool does not put hinting into glyphlets. It puts in default BlueValues hints

that are good for most font designs but not for all. To produce glyphlets with hinting, other

tools may be available.

PSD Export

When exporting layered Illustrator documents to Photoshop, please note that hidden layers are

not exported.

SVG

e default SVG setting for “Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities” has been changed. is

setting which was on by default in Illustrator CS, embeds all Illustrator content in the actual

SVG le. When on, it will ensure that Illustrator content is as editable on File-Open, as it was

on Save-As for SVG. However it creates a much larger SVG le than strictly necessary, and will

prevent any of the aer Save modications done to the actual SVG le from being imported. In

light of how we have improved our support for native SVG import in Illustrator CS2, the fact

that SVG le sizes need to be as small as possible in most target workows, and how many

users want to animate or add interactivity to the SVG output, this option has now been turned

o by default.

PDF

e calculation of the PDF MediaBox changed in Illustrator CS2. In the CS version, the PDF

MediaBox values were automatically adjusted to accommodate all of the artwork in the docu-

ment, even that which extended outside of the art board. In CS2, the PDF box values are

constrained to the size of the document’s art board (or are set relative to it, such as when saving

PDF with pagemarks and/or bleed values). If you have content outside of the art board which

you wish to have visible when opening your Illustrator CS2 documents into Acrobat, on Copy-

Paste as PDF in other applications, or when placing into an aggregate application such as

InDesign, you must increase the size of your art board to contain all of the desired content.

Demonstrator

is tool is only available in English language versions of Adobe®Illustrator

Demonstrator may not be able to open demo les if the Open or Place Dialogs are congured

to the “Use Adobe Dialog” setting. If you come across this issue, you can work around the

limitation by simply changing either the Open or Place Dialog setting from “Use Adobe Di-

alog” to “Use OS Dialog” before running Demonstrator.
