Prepare for Installation

Note: This Quick Installation Guide is intended for experienced installers. For detailed

hardware installation instructions, refer to the Catalyst 5000 Series Installation Guide and the

Catalyst 5000 Series Module Installation Guide.

1Check the packing slip to ensure that all the proper components are present.

2Ensure that the site is set up properly:

• Prepare equipment racks.

• Ensure that the environment is within specification.

• Prepare network connections.

3Obtain the following equipment:

• ESD grounding strap and antistatic mat

• Numbers 1 and 2 Phillips screwdrivers and 3/16-inch flat blade screwdriver

• Tape measure and level

4Ensure your safety when installing the Catalyst 5002 switch:

• Lift the chassis safely.

• Cooperate with the natural laws of electricity.

• Ensure that the power service at your site is suitable for the chassis you are

connecting.

5Take steps to prevent ESD damage to electronic components:

• Use an ESD wrist strap when handling modules or coming into contact with

internal components (see figure).

• Handle modules by the edges only.

• Place modules in a static shielding

bag when not installed.

Rack-Mount the Switch

Attach the L brackets to the chassis

Attach the L brackets to the chassis using the four Phillips-head screws provided in the

rack-mount kit.

Install the switch in the rack

1With aperson on each side of the chassis, lift and position theswitch in the equipment rack.

2Align the holes in the L brackets with the mounting holes

in the equipment rack.

3Insert the mounting screws through the holes

in the L brackets and into the threaded holes in

the mounting post.

4Use a tape measure and level to ensure that the

chassis is installed straight and level.

Connect the Power (continued)

DC power supplies

1Verify that power is off to the DC-input circuit.

2Wire the DC-input power supply to the terminal block (see figure), ensuring that all wire

connections are secure (suggested DC-input wires are 14-AWG copper conductors):

• Ground wire to the ground connector (you should always connect the ground wire

first and disconnect it last)

• –48V wire to the “−” connector

• –48V return to the “+” connector

3On a new installation, remove the adhesive strip covering the CO ground connector.

4Connect a 10- to 12-AWG copper conductor ground wire to the CO ground connector on

the switch. Use a ground wire lug that is 0.320 inch (7.8 mm) or less.

5Restore power to the DC circuit by turning the circuit breaker on (|).

Warning Before performing the following procedure, ensure that power is removed

from the DC circuit.

Start the System

1Before you start the system, verify the following:

• All modules are installed correctly and all interface cable connections are secure.

• Each power supply is connected to a grounded power source.

• If both power supplies are being used, each power cord is connected to a different

line.

• A terminal is connected to the supervisor module console port and is turned on.

2To power up the switch, plug the power cables into the power supplies. The switch begins

the boot process.

3Verify that the following occurs during the boot process:

• The LEDs on the power supplies should be green.

• The PS1 and PS2 LEDs on the supervisor engine should be green.

• The fan LED on the supervisor engine should be green and you should hear the

system fans operating.

• The System Status LED on the supervisor engine should be green after the boot is

complete (it will flash red, orange, and green during startup).

• The supervisor engine interface LEDs and module LEDs (such as the Link LEDs)

might blink or stay lit continuously during the boot process. Many module LEDs

do not come on until you configure the interfaces. Wait until the system boot is

complete before attempting to verify the module LED indications.

• The console terminal displays a script and system banner.

• When the boot process is complete, the supervisor engine begins to initialize the

modules. Messages appear on the console as the modules come online.

4Press Return at the Enter Password prompt to access the console command line.

Your installation is complete!

Now, refer to the Quick Software Configuration Guide

to configure the switch.
