Introduction
The 46054 GTS-D Butt-in Test Set is an advanced, convenient, and easy-to-use telephone line
troubleshooting device. Equipped with a number of LEDs and alarms, the 46054 lets the user
know the operating mode and provides alerts for hazardous situations.
LEDs: Polarity
Low Battery
Talk/Monitor
Tones: Low Pitch
Middle Pitch
High Pitch
The LEDs and tones indicate various conditions and functions. They are shown throughout the
manual in
italic type.
The 46054 produces two types of alarms to alert the user to potentially hazardous situations.
•
Excessive DC voltage is indicated by three low-pitched tones in a row.
• AC line voltage is indicated by continuous ringing.
If you hear either of these alarms, which are repeated in
bold italic type
in this manual,
remove the test set from the line carefully and immediately.

Operation
The test set must have a charged battery installed in order to operate.
1. Connect the red wire to the ring (negative) side of the circuit.
2. Connect the black wire to the tip (positive) side of the circuit.
3. Use the Talk, Monitor and Mute features as described in this section.
Automatic Ground Start
Some lines, especially PABX, require a momentary ground to draw a dial tone.
Connect the test set’s red and black wires to the telephone circuit as usual, and connect the
green wire to ground. Press the TALK button momentarily to check for dial tone.
The ground start is automatic, and the green wire can remain connected without affecting the
call.
TALK
Press once to go off-hook (connect). Press again or press MONITOR to go on-hook
(disconnect).
▼
Off-Hook Mode
LED: Flashing red
Tone: Middle Pitch–Middle Pitch
▼
On-Hook Mode

Automatic Line Checks
After the TALK button is pressed, the 46054 automatically checks the line for the presence of
digital signals. If it detects digital signals, the speaker will produce a distinctive alarm
(Middle
Pitch–Low Pitch, Middle Pitch–Low Pitch, Middle Pitch–Low Pitch)
to indicate that the test set
is connected to a digital line. To prevent disturbance to the digital information being transmit-
ted, the test set will not go off-hook while connected to this type of line.
After determining that the line is free of digital information, the test set checks for excessive
voltages. If the test set signals either the excessive DC voltage alarm
(low pitch, low pitch,
low pitch)
or the AC line voltage alarm
(constant ringing),
remove the test set from the line
carefully and immediately!

8
Operation (cont’d)
MONITOR
Press once to monitor the line without disturbing data, signal, or voice transmissions on the
line. Press repeatedly to alternate between Monitor mode and off.
To conserve battery life, the test set will shut off after 20 minutes of monitoring or 90 seconds
after removal from the line.

MUTE
Press and release to stop transmitting over the line, to filter outside noise from the line, or to
eliminate sidetones. Press again to talk. Mute works only when the test set is in Talk mode.
