Safety instructions
Intended use
The RM4220 amplifier is to be used exclusively for measurement tasks and dir
ectly related control tasks within the application limits detailed in the specifica
tions. Use for any purpose other than the above is deemed to be non‐desig
nated use.
The RM4220 amplifier is designed for installation in EMC‐proof housings (e.g.
control cabinet).
In the interests of safety, the device should only be operated by qualified per
sonnel as described in the Operating Manual and taking into account the spe
cifications. It is also essential to comply with the legal and safety requirements
for the application concerned during use. The same applies to the use of
accessories.
The scope of supply and performance of the RM4220 covers only a small area
of measurement technology. In addition, equipment planners, installers and
operators should plan, implement and respond to the safety engineering con
siderations of measurement technology in such a way as to minimize remain
ing dangers. On‐site regulations must be complied with at all times. There must
be reference to the remaining dangers connected with measurement techno
logy.
Each time, before commissioning, you must first run a project planning and risk
analysis that takes into account all the safety aspects of automation techno
logy. This particularly concerns personal and machine protection. Additional
safety precautions must be taken in plants where malfunctions could cause
major damage, loss of data or even personal injury. In the event of a fault,
these precautions must establish safe operating conditions. This can be done,
for example, by mechanical interlocking, error signaling, etc.
Ambient conditions on site
•Protect the device from direct contact with water (IP20).
•Please observe the permissible maximum ambient temperatures stated in
the specifications.
Conversions and modifications
The RM4220 amplifier must not be modified from the design or safety engin
eering point of view except with our express agreement. Any modification shall
exclude all liability on our part for any damage resulting therefrom.
In particular, any repair or soldering work on motherboards (replacement of
components) is prohibited. When exchanging complete modules, use only ori
ginal parts from HBM.

Qualified personnel
Qualified persons means persons entrusted with the installation, fitting, com
missioning and operation of the product who possess the appropriate qualifica
tions for their function.
This includes people who meet at least one of the three following require
ments:
- Knowledge of the safety concepts of automation technology is a require
ment and as project personnel, you must be familiar with these concepts.
- As automation plant operating personnel, you have been instructed how to
handle the machinery. You are familiar with the operation of the modules
and technologies described in this documentation.
- As commissioning engineers or service engineers, you have successfully
completed the training to qualify you to repair the automation systems. You
are also authorized to activate, ground and label circuits and equipment in
accordance with safety engineering standards.
It is also essential to comply with the legal and safety requirements for the
application concerned during use. The same applies to the use of accessories.
General dangers of failing to follow the safety instructions
The RM4220 amplifier corresponds to the state of the art and is failsafe. The
device may give rise to residual dangers if it is inappropriately installed and
operated by untrained personnel. Any person instructed to carry out installa
tion, commissioning, maintenance or repair of the device must have read and
understood the Operating Manual and in particular the technical safety instruc
tions.
Maintenance and cleaning
The RM4220 amplifier is maintenance‐free. Please note the following points
when cleaning the housing:
•Before cleaning, disconnect the device from the power supply.
•Clean the housing with a soft, slightly damp (not wet!) cloth. You should
never use solvents, since these could damage the housing.
•When cleaning, ensure that no liquid gets into the device or connections.
Environmental protection, disposal
In accordance with national and local environmental protection and material
recovery and recycling regulations, old equipment that can no longer be used
must be disposed of separately and not with normal household garbage.
If you need more information about waste disposal, please contact your local
authorities or the dealer from whom you purchased the product.

Symbols on the device and their meaning
Symbol:
Meaning: Note supply voltage
This symbol indicates that the supply voltage must lie between 16 and 32 V.

The CE mark enables the manufacturer to guarantee that the product complies
with the requirements of the relevant EC directives (the Declaration of Con
formity can be found on the HBM website at www.hbm.com under Support ->
HBMdoc).

In accordance with national and local environmental protection and material
recovery and recycling regulations, old devices that can no longer be used

2 Application
The RM4220 module is an amplifier for sensors with strain gages. The ampli
fier offers a very simple and practical setting of the zero point and the full scale
with DIP switches and potentiometers. The bridge excitation voltage can be
selected: 5 or 10V. The output signal can be 0 …10 V or 10 V and, at the
same time 4 …20 mA.
The transducer connection can be with four‐wire or six‐wire configuration. If
you are using six‐wire configuration, you can ignore the influence of the resist
ors or the resistance change of the extension cable.
The housing, made of polyamide PA type PHOENIX EM, can be attached to
any support rails as per DIN EN 60715. The support rails must be located
within an EMC‐proof housing, e.g. in a control cabinet.

3 Mounting/Dismounting
The housing is mounted on a support rail as per DIN EN 60715. Hook the
housing in on the upper edge and press it downwards until the spring plate
engages on the bottom edge.

To remove, press the spring plate down with a screwdriver and unhook the
housing.

Important
The support rail must be connected to grounded conductor potential . This
means that the RM4220 ground connection ( ) is also connected to the groun
ded conductor potential. The surrounding housing must also be grounded, i.e.
connected to the grounded conductor potential.

4 Electrical connection
The connections are implemented via the four plug‐in terminals. The permiss
ible diameter of the connections is 0.13 mm2... 1.5 mm2. End sleeves (without
plastic collars, length 10 mm) should be used on the strands to connect the
wires to the terminals. Strands must not be tinned, irrespective of whether end
sleeves are used or not.

The transducer cable and the signal output cables must be shielded. The cable
shield must be connected to or to the shielding of the surrounding housing.
The shielding must be connected extensively. With other connection tech
niques, an EMC‐proof shield should be applied in the wire area and this shield
should also be connected extensively (see also HBM Greenline Information,
brochure i1577). The surrounding housing must be EMC‐proof. All cables that
lead into this housing must be shielded and/or equipped with filters.
The four plug‐in terminals are labeled with numbers to prevent confusion when
attaching them to the four sockets. The connection diagram is printed on the
housing lid as shown in the tables below.
Six‐wire configuration must be used for connecting the transducer. The factory
setting is with four‐wire configuration, see Section 5.2, Page 13.
