Conﬁguration and installation summary

This document summarizes the HP MSA FC VDS Hardware Provider components, conﬁguration, and

installation. For more detailed procedures, please refer to the HP Modular Smart Array FC VDS Hardware

Providers administration guide.

Components

The following hardware and software components are used with the HP Provider and an HP MSA disk

array. See the Read Me ﬁle and contact HP Support for HP tested and approved components.

Hardware components

•HP StorageWorks MSA1000/1500 Disk Array

•Windows 2003 Server: This server contains the Microsoft VDS Service and HP VDS Hardware

Provider.

•Fibre Channel Host bus adapter (HBA): Installs in the VDS Provider server to provide FC

connection to the MSA array. VDS supports only certain Emulex and Qlogic HBAs and the SCSI

Storport driver, not SCSI Miniport.

•Fibre Channel switch and cabling: For connecting the VDS Provider server to the array via fabric

SAN. Some arrays have a built-in switch.

Software components

IMPORTANT NOTE: The right combination of software versions is crucial to conﬁguring a working

system. RefertothetheREADMEﬁles accompanying the HP Provider installation ﬁles for information

about compatible software versions and system conﬁgurations. Follow all conﬁguration and installation

instructions carefully.

The following components and conﬁgurations enable you to use the HP MSA FC VDS Provider with the

MSA.

HP MSA disk array (host server optional):

•Conﬁgured as described in the following Conﬁguration procedures

Windows VDS Provider server:

•Windows 2003 Server

•HP MSA FC VDS Provider 4.00.00

•Microsoft QFEs (quick ﬁxes), if required for your OS or VDS, are listed in the HP Provider README

ﬁle. For more information, contact HP Support.

Optional components

•HP Basic MPIO software if multipathing is desired

•MSCS clustering (4–node clusters are supported)

Conﬁguration procedures

Physically install and conﬁgure the disk array and the server as described below and in the manuals for

those products. Refer to the diagram under Components for an overview of interconnections.

Conﬁguration summary

You will perform the following tasks during conﬁguration:

VDS Provider Windows 2003 server:

•Install Windows 2003 Server OS.

•InstallFCHostBusAdapteranddriver.

•Connect the server HBA to the array using a FC switch and set up zoning (if required).

•Install NIC card and connect to Ethernet LAN (optional).

•Install HP MPIO software if multipathing is desired.

Disk array and host:

•Connect the array to the VDS Server through the FC switch.

•Verify existing or install MPIO software license.

Important conﬁguration notes:

Administrator privileges are required for all devices and software. If you do not have administrator

privileges, the software and hardware will not communicate properly.

When using the VDS framework to create and manage LUNs, the LUNs should be the same size as the

physical disk size. You can make LUNs smaller than a physical disk (or disks, if spanning multiple disks),

butanyspaceleftoveronthephysicaldisk(s)cannotbeused. Forexample,ifyouhavethree36

GB drives totalling 108 GB and you create a LUN of 20 GB spanning all three disks, the remaining

88 GB are unusable.

YoumayuseBasicMPIOwiththediskarrayandProviderserver,butyouwillnotbeabletouseVDSto

manage MPIO. Use whatever MPIO conﬁguration software you have available to manage MPIO.

Installation summary

You will perform the following tasks on the Windows server during installation:

•Remove the previous version of the Provider, if necessary.

•Run the Provider installation executable: setup.exe.

•Follow the InstallShield Wizard instructions to install the software.

•Install Microsoft QFEs (quick ﬁxes), if any. See the Provider README ﬁle for details.

•Verify installation using Windows Disk Management and the DISKRAID List Provider command.

6Conﬁguration and installation summary

Removal summary

Before removing the HP VDS Provider, issue a net stop command from the command line, as shown below:

net stop vds

Uninstalling the HP Provider using Windows

1. In Windows, select Start >Settings >Control Panel.

2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

3. Select the HP MSA VDS Hardware Provider program for removal.

4. Click Change/Remove. Windows removes the program.

Uninstalling using the HP Provider installer

You can also uninstall the HP Provider by starting the Provider installer again. Removal follows the same

steps as installation. When the Remove Program window appears, click the Remove button, and then

click Finish when removal is complete.
