CAUTION: Have a licensed electrician aach the appropriate grounding lug to the grounding cable that

you supply. Using a grounding cable with an incorrectly aached lug can damage the switch.

Install the EX4100 Switch in a Rack

Before you start the installaon, ensure to review the General Safety Guidelines and Warnings. Also, have someone

available to help you secure the switch to the rack.

You can install the EX4100 switch on a desktop or other level surface, in a two-post or four-post rack, or on a wall. The

mounng kit that ships in the box has the brackets you need to install the switch in a two-post rack. We’ll walk you

through how to install the switch in a two-post rack.

NOTE: If you want to install the switch in a four-post rack or on the wall , you’ll need to order separate mounng

kits. The four-post rack mount kit also has brackets for mounng the switch in a recessed posion in the rack.

1. Place the switch on a at, stable surface.

2. Aach an ESD grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to the ESD grounding point on the switch.

3. Li the switch and posion it in the rack. Posion the switch so that the AIR IN labels on the fan modules are facing

the cold aisle or the AIR OUT labels on the fan modules are facing the hot aisle. Line up the boom hole in each

mounng bracket with a hole in each rack post, ensuring that the switch is level.

4. While you’re holding the switch in place, have a second person insert and ghten the rack mount screws to secure

the mounng brackets to the rack posts. Tighten the screws in the two boom holes rst, and then ghten the

screws in the two top holes.

5. Check that the mounng brackets on each side of the rack are lined up with each other.

Power On

Now you’re ready to connect the EX4100 switch to a dedicated AC power source. The switch comes with the AC

power cord for your geographic locaon.

Here's how to connect the switch to AC power:

1. Aach an ESD grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to the ESD grounding point on the switch.

2. Connect one end of the grounding cable to a proper earth ground, such as the rack .

3. Place the grounding lug (that's aached to the grounding cable) over the protecve earthing terminal on the rear

panel as depicted in the following gures.

EX4100-24P, EX4100-24T, EX4100-48P, and EX4100-48T switch models

4. Secure the grounding lug to the protecve earthing terminal using the two M5X10 mm screws with washer

5. Dress the grounding cable. Ensure that the cable doesn’t block access to or touch other device components, and

that it doesn’t drape where people could trip over it.

6. Ensure that the power supply is fully inserted in the rear panel of the switch.

7. On the rear panel, connect the power cord retainer clip to the AC power supply:

a. Push the end of the power cord retainer strip into the slot above the power cord socket unl the strip snaps

into place. Ensure that the loop in the retainer strip faces the power cord. The power cord retainer clip extends

out of the chassis by 3 in. (7.62 cm).

b. Press the small tab on the retainer strip to loosen the loop. Slide the loop unl there's enough space to insert

the power cord coupler into the power cord socket.

c. Plug in the power cord to the power cord socket.

d. Slide the loop toward the power supply unl it's snug against the base of the coupler.

e. Press the tab on the loop and draw out the loop into a ght circle.

8. If the AC power source outlet has a power switch, turn it o.

9. Insert the power cord plug into an AC power source outlet.

10. If the AC power source outlet has a power switch, turn it on. The switch powers on as soon as you plug it in.

11. Check to see that the DC OK LED on the power supply is lit steadily green. If not, disconnect the power supply

from the power source. You’ll need to replace the power supply (see Maintain the EX4100 Power System in the

EX4100 Switch Hardware Guide).

Step 2: Up and Running

Plug and Play | 7

Customize the Basic Conguraon Using the CLI | 8

Now that the EX4100 switch is powered on, let’s do some inial conguraon to get the switch up and running on your

network. It’s simple to provision and manage the switch and other devices on your network. Choose the conguraon

tool that’s right for you:

• Juniper Mist. To use Mist, you’ll need an account on the Mist Cloud Plaorm. See Overview of Connecng Mist

Access Points and Juniper EX Series Switches.

• CLI commands

Plug and Play

EX4100 switches already have factory-default sengs congured right out of the box to make them plug-and-play

devices. The default sengs are stored in a conguraon le that:

• Sets Ethernet switching and storm control on all interfaces

• Sets Power over Ethernet (PoE+) on all RJ-45 ports of models that provide PoE+

• Enables the following protocols:

• Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping

• Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP)

• Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP)

• Link Layer Discovery Protocol-Media Endpoint Discovery (LLDP-MED)

These sengs are loaded as soon as you power on the switch. If you want to see what’s in the factory-default

conguraon le for your switch, see EX4100 Default Conguraon.

Customize the Basic Conguraon Using the CLI

Have these values handy before you begin customizing sengs for the switch:

• Hostname

• Root authencaon password

• Management port IP address

• Default gateway IP address

•(Oponal) DNS server and SNMP read community

1. Verify that the serial port sengs for your laptop or desktop PC are set to the default:

• Baud rate—9600

• Flow control—None

• Data—8

• Parity—None

• Stop bits—1

• DCD state—Disregard

2. Connect the console port on the EX4100 switch to a laptop or desktop PC using the Ethernet cable and the RJ-45

to DB-9 serial port adapter that came in the box with the switch. If your laptop or desktop PC doesn't have a serial

port, use a serial-to-USB adapter (not provided).

3. At the Junos OS log in prompt, type root to log in. You don't need to enter a password. If the soware boots before

you connect your laptop or desktop PC to the console port, you might need to press the Enter key for the prompt

to appear.

NOTE: EX Series switches running current Junos soware are enabled for Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP).

However, when you congure an EX Series switch for the very rst me, you’ll need to disable ZTP. We

show you how to do that here. If you see any ZTP-related messages on the console, just ignore them.

FreeBSD/arm (w) (ttyu0):

4. Start the CLI.

root@:RE:0% cli

{master:0} root>

5. Enter conguraon mode.

{master:0} root> configure

{master:0}[edit]

root#

6. Delete the ZTP conguraon. Factory default conguraons can vary over dierent releases. You may see a

message that the statement does not exist. Don’t worry, it’s safe to proceed.

{master:0}[edit]

root# delete chassis auto-image-upgrade

7. Add a password to the root administraon user account. Enter a plain-text password, an encrypted password, or an

SSH public key string. In this example, we show you how to enter a plain-text password.

{master:0}[edit]

root# set system root-authentication plain-text-password

New password: password

Retype new password: password

8. Acvate the current conguraon to stop ZTP messages on the console.

{master:0}[edit]

root# commit

configuration check succeeds

commit complete

9. Congure the hostname.

{master:0}[edit]

root# set system host-name name

10. Congure the IP address and prex length for the management interface on the switch. As part of this step, you

remove the factory default DHCP seng for the management interface.

{master:0}[edit]

root# delete interfaces vme unit 0 family inet dhcp

root# set interfaces vme unit 0 family inet address address/prefix-length

11. Congure the default gateway for the management network.

{master:0}[edit]

root# set routing-options static route 0/0 next-hop address

12. Congure the SSH service. By default the root user cannot log in remotely. In this step you enable the SSH service

and also enable root login via SSH.

{master:0}[edit]

root# set system services ssh root-login allow

13. Oponal: Congure the IP address of a DNS server.

{master:0}[edit]
