The transformer must not be moved while the train is being

operated. After the transformer has been turned off, it must

never be carried by holding it by its power cord.

1. Safety Information for the Operation of

Märklin Transformers

Read the following safety information before using a

Märklin transformer for the ﬁrst time:

• Alltransformersmustbepluggedonlyintoanoutletwith

thehouseholdcurrentindicatedonthefaceplateofthe

transformer.

Example:Identicationplateforthe120volttransformer.

• Mountthetransformeronasturdybase.Neveroperate

thetransformeronabasethatiswetorthatisreadily

ammable.

• Thistransformerisnotatoy.Itisdesignedforthecontrol

ofamodelrailroadlayout.

• Thetransformermustbeunpluggedfromtheelectrical

outletbeforebeingmoved.Ifthetransformerhasbeenin

operation,letitcooloffbeforemovingit.

• Inspecttheconditionofthepowercordandthetransfor-

merhousingatregularintervalsfordamage.Thisvisual

inspectionshouldonlybedonewhenthepowercords

forallofthetransformersbeingusedareunpluggedfrom

thehouseholdcurrent.Ifyouhavetheleastsuspicion

thatthetransformerisdamaged,youshouldnotuseit

againuntilithasbeenthoroughlyinspectedandrepaired

byanauthorizedserviceorganization(example:Märklin

ServiceDepartment).The power cord for the transformer

must never be replaced.Inthisinstancedisposeofthe

transformerinanauthorizedmanner,orsendittothe

MärklinServiceDepartmentforexchange.

The following safety precautions must always be observed

when connecting more than one transformer to a model

railroad layout or setup:

• Thepowercordsforallexistingtransformersconnected

tothelayoutmustrstbeunpluggedwhenconnecting

electricalpowerconsumers(examples:feederconnec-

tions,turnouts,signals,lights,etc.)toatransformer!

• Thealternatingcurrentoutputsoftwoormoretransfor-

mersmustneverbeconnectedwithoneanother.

Important Safety Risk!

Underadverseconditionsitishighlydanger-

ous,iftheyelloworredsockets/terminals

fortwoormoretransformersareconnected

witheachotherinadditiontotheconnectionsbetweenthe

yellow

browngroundsockets/terminals.Insuchasituationifthe

powercordforonetransformerisstillpluggedintoahouse-

holdcurrentoutlet,adangerousalternatingcurrentwillbe

presentinthebaremetalpartsofthepowercordsplugsfor

the other transformers.

Always observe the following:

Thepowercordsforseveraltransformersshouldtherefore

alwaysbepluggedintoacommonpowerdistributionstrip.

Thetransformersmustalwaysbeconnectedtoordiscon-

nectedfromthehouseholdcurrentbypluggingorunplug-

gingthepowercordforthedistributionstrip!

• Electricalpowerconsumers(examples:feedercon-

nections,turnouts,signals,lights,etc.)mustneverbe

connectedtotwoormoretransformersatthesametime,

becausethissituationwillcreatethedangerousalternat-

ingcurrentdescribedabove.

Important:

Twoormoresolenoidaccessoriesconnectedtogetherto

aswitchortoacircuittrackmustnotreceivetheirpower

fromdifferenttransformers.

• Nevertouchanybaremetalpartsonalayout,before

the entire layout is completely without power, i. e. all

transformers must be disconnected from the household

current.

• Alocomotivemustneverbestoppedcontinuouslyover

theseparationpointbetweentwotrackpowercircuitsin

conventionaloperationwithDCtransformers!

2. Connecting the Transformer

Makesurethatthepowercordsforallofthetransformers

usedwithyourlayoutaredisconnectedfromthehousehold

currentbeforeconnectingatransformertothelayout!

– Connectonlythefeedertrack8590

– OperationwithACcurrentforconventionalhookupof

turnouts,signalmechanismsandlights.

2.2 Electrical Connections for a Feeder Track

Stripasmallamountofinsulationfromtheendsofthered

andbrownfeederwires,thatareincludedwiththe8590fee-

dertrack,andconnecteachofthesetotheterminalofthe

samecoloronthepowerpack.Theredwireisconnected

tofeedertrack’sterminalclipthatisconnectedtotherail

closesttothepowerpack.Thebrownwireisconnectedto

theotherterminalcliponthefeedertrack.Inthediagram

belowthefeedertrackasinstalledshowsthebrownwire

connectedtotheleftterminalclipandtheredwirecon-

nectedtotherightterminalclipofthefeedertrack.

Onmediumsizeandlargerlayoutspowermustbefedtothe

trackatseveralpoints.

Several track circuits

Inordertobeabletocontrolseverallocomotivesseparate-

ly,thelayoutmustbedividedintoseveraltrackcircuitsby

installingrailinsulators(8954).Eachtrackcircuithasitsown

Transformerwithatleastonefeedertrack.Pleasebesure

toobserveatalltimesthesafetyprecautionsgivenabove

whenusingseveraltransformers.

Connecting Lights or Solenoid Accessories

Modelrailroadlightsorsolenoidaccessoriessuchasturn-

outorsignalmechanismsareconnectedtotheconstant10

voltACcurrentoutputonatransformer.Allofthetransfor-

mersdescribedintheseinstructionshaveapairofterminals

forthisconnection(yellow+greyterminalclips).

Modelrailroadlightsinbuildingsand/orstreetlightsare

connecteddirectlytotheyellowterminalclipandgrey

terminalclipontheTransformer.

3. Operations with the Transformer

intoawalloutlet.

Thelocomotive‘sspeedischangedbyturningthespeed

controlknobontheTransformer.

Turntotheright–thelocomotiverunsright

Turntotheleft–thelocomotiverunsleft

Turntothe“0”setting–thelocomotivestops.

Important:Themodelrailroadlightsorsolenoidaccessories

connectedtothetransformermustberatedfor10voltsAC

A light or solenoid accessory must never be connected to

two different transformers at the same time.

If two solenoid accessories are connected to the same

circuit track or control box, then both solenoid accessories

must be powered from the same transformer.

Ifthelocomotivedoestheoppositeoftheabove,thenthe

redandbrownfeerderwiresneedtobereversed.

Model railroad with several transformers:

Plugthepowercordsforthetransformersintoapowerstrip

andplugthepowercordforthelatterintoawalloutlet.If

youhaveapowerstripwithanon/offswitch,turnthison

afterhavingcarriedoutthestepsabove.

4. Short Circuit or Overload on a Transformer

Abuilt-inthermalswitchprotectstheTransformerfromdam-

ageincaseofanoverloadorashortcircuit.Locomotiveson

thelayoutwillcometoastop,accessoriescannotbeoper-

atedandalllampsconnectedtotheTransformerwillgoout.

The following procedure is recommended:

1. Unplugthepowercordsforalltransformersfromtheir

outlets.

2. Lookforthecauseoftheshortcircuitonthelayoutand

correctit.

3. Afterabout1minutethethermalswitchwillgobackto

beingon.Afterthisamountoftimehaspassed,allTrans-

formerscanbeplacedinoperationagain.

IftheTransformershouldshutoffagainandyouareunable

tolocateashortcircuit,thentheTransformerisoverloaded.

InthiscasethenumberofusersconnectedtotheTransfor-

mermustbereduced.

Other Information

AllMärklinproductsasdeliveredconformtotherelevant

regulationsonpreventinginterferencewithradioandtelevi-

sionreception.Wornoutmaterialsand/orfaultymainte-

nanceoftheproductaswellasoperationnotinaccordance

withtheinstructionscanleadtoincreasedinterferencewith

radioandtelevisionreception.Aninformationsheetonthis

subjectisavailableonrequest.
