NI PXIe-5673E
6.6 GHz RF Vector Signal Generator
Note Before you begin, install and configure your chassis and controller.
This document explains how to install, configure, and test the NI PXIe-5673E (NI 5673E).
The NI 5673E is a 6.6 GHz RF vector signal generator (VSG) with RF list mode. The
NI 5673E ships with the NI-RFSG instrument driver, which you use to program the device.
The NI 5673E comprises the following devices:
• NI PXIe-5450/5451 (NI 5450/5451) arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) module
• NI PXIe-5611 (NI 5611) I/Q modulator module
• NI PXIe-5650/5651/5652 (NI 5650/5651/5652) local oscillator (LO) source module

Caution The protection provided by this product may be impaired if it is used in a
manner not described in this document.
Hot Surface If the NI 5673E has been in use, it may exceed safe handling
temperatures and cause burns. Allow the NI 5673E to cool before removing it from
the chassis.

Electromagnetic Compatibility Guidelines
This product was tested and complies with the regulatory requirements and limits for
electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) stated in the product specifications. These requirements
and limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the
product is operated in the intended operational electromagnetic environment.
This product is intended for use in industrial locations. However, harmful interference may
occur in some installations, when the product is connected to a peripheral device or test object,
or if the product is used in residential or commercial areas. To minimize interference with
radio and television reception and prevent unacceptable performance degradation, install and
use this product in strict accordance with the instructions in the product documentation.
Furthermore, any modifications to the product not expressly approved by National Instruments
could void your authority to operate it under your local regulatory rules.
Caution To ensure the specified EMC performance, operate this product only with
shielded cables and accessories.
Caution To ensure the specified EMC performance, the length of all I/O cables
must be no longer than 3 m (10 ft) with the exception of cables connected to the
RF OUT and PLS MOD ports, which must be no longer than 10 m (30 ft).
Verifying the System Requirements
To use the NI-RFSG instrument driver, your system must meet certain requirements.
For more information about minimum system requirements, recommended system, and
supported application development environments (ADEs), refer to the product readme, which
is available on the driver software media or online at ni.com/updates.
Unpacking the Kit
Caution To prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging the device,
ground yourself using a grounding strap or by holding a grounded object, such as
your computer chassis.

1. Touch the antistatic package to a metal part of the computer chassis.
2. Remove the device from the package and inspect the device for loose components or any
other sign of damage.
Caution Never touch the exposed pins of connectors.
Notify NI if the device appears damaged in any way. Do not install a damaged device.
3. Unpack any other items and documentation from the kit.
Store the device in the antistatic package when the device is not in use.

Other Equipment
There are several required items not included in your device kit that you need to install or
operate the NI 5673E.
Required Items
• A PXI Express chassis and chassis documentation. The NI PXIe-1085 chassis is one
available option for your device. For more information about compatible chassis options,
refer to ni.com.
• A PXI Express embedded controller or MXI controller system that meets the system
requirements specified in this guide and chassis documentation.
Optional Items
• A 1 N · m standard SMA torque wrench (NI part number 780487-01).
Preparing the Environment
Ensure that the environment you are using the NI 5673E in meets the following specifications.

Indoor use only.
Caution Clean the hardware with a soft, nonmetallic brush. Make sure that the
hardware is completely dry and free from contaminants before returning it to
service.

specifications.
Installing the Software
You must be an Administrator to install NI software on your computer.
1. Install an ADE, such as LabVIEW or LabWindows™/CVI™.
2. Insert the driver software DVD into your computer. The installer should open
automatically.

If the installation window does not appear, navigate to the drive, double-click it, and
double-click autorun.exe.
3. Follow the instructions in the installation prompts to install the NI-RFSG driver software.
Note Windows users may see access and security messages during
installation. Accept the prompts to complete the installation.
4. When the installer completes, restart your system.
Installing the NI 5673E
Caution To prevent damage to the device caused by ESD or contamination, handle
the device using the edges or the metal bracket.
You must install NI-RFSG before installing the hardware.
Before you install the hardware, refer to the guidelines in the Maintain Forced-Air Cooling
Note to Users included with the module to ensure that the chassis can cool the device
effectively.
To use the included cables, you must install the NI 5611 I/Q modulator module in the slot
immediately to the right of the NI 5450/5451 AWG module, and you must install the
NI 5650/5651/5652 LO source module in the slot immediately to the right of the NI 5611 I/Q
modulator module.
1. Ensure the AC power source is connected to the chassis before installing the modules.
The AC power cord grounds the chassis and protects it from electrical damage while you
install the modules.
2. Power off the chassis.
3. Inspect the slot pins on the chassis backplane for any bends or damage prior to
installation. Do not install a module if the backplane is damaged.
4. Remove the black plastic connectors from all the captive screws on the module front
panel.
5. Identify a supported slot in the chassis. The following figure shows the symbols that
indicate the slot types.

NI 5673E modules can be placed in PXI Express peripheral slots or PXI Express Hybrid
peripheral slots.
6. Touch any metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity.
7. Ensure that the ejector handle is in the unlatched (downward) position.
8. Place the module edges into the module guides at the top and bottom of the chassis. Slide
the device into the slot until it is fully inserted.

9. Latch the module in place by pulling up on the ejector handle.
10. Secure the device front panel to the chassis using the front-panel mounting screws.
Note Tightening the top and bottom mounting screws increases mechanical
stability and also electrically connects the front panel to the chassis, which can
improve the signal quality and electromagnetic performance.
11. Cover all empty slots using filler panels or slot blockers to maximize cooling air flow.
12. Power on the chassis.

1. Use the Cable A center pin to connect the CH 1-/Q- connector of the NI 5450/5451 front
panel to the Q- connector of the NI 5611 front panel.
Note Ensure that the SMA cable center pins properly align with the SMA
connectors to avoid bending the cable pins or damaging the front panel
connectors on the device. If the SMA cable does not exactly align with the

SMA connector, bend the cable slightly by hand to align the cable and the
connector. The amount of bending should be minimal. The cables can be
damaged by excessive bending.
2. Use the Cable A center pin to connect the CH 1+/Q+ connector of the NI 5450/5451 front
panel to the Q+ connector of the NI 5611 front panel.
3. Use the Cable A center pin to connect the CH 0-/I- connector of the NI 5450/5451 front
panel to the I- connector of the NI 5611 front panel.
4. Use the Cable A center pin to connect the CH 0+/I+ connector of the NI 5450/5451 front
panel to the I+ connector of the NI 5611 front panel.
5. Use the Cable B center pin to connect the RF OUT connector of the NI 5650/5651/5652
front panel to the LO IN connector of the NI 5611 front panel.
6. Use the center pin of a flexible cable to connect the CLK IN connector of the
NI 5450/5451 front panel to the REF OUT2 connector of the NI 5650/5651/5652 front
panel.
7. Always connect the 50 Ω termination load to the LO OUT connector of the NI 5611 front
panel unless the NI 5611 module is daisy-chained to other devices.
8. Hand-tighten all SMA cable ends on the SMA connectors after the cable center pins are
correctly aligned and connected. The cable connectors should tighten without much
torque or effort. If a cable bends due to incorrect alignment, remove the cable from the
front panel connector and reconnect the cable center pin on the SMA cable to the SMA
connector.
9. Carefully complete tightening all SMA connectors to 1 N · m using an appropriate torque
wrench (not included) or torque screwdriver and SMA driver bit. Tighten only until the
wrench clicks.
Caution Incorrect torque at SMA connections can degrade signal fidelity and
phase-locked loop (PLL) performance and may cause insertion loss. Use an
appropriate torque wrench or torque screwdriver and SMA driver bit to ensure
all SMA connections are properly torqued. SMA connectors for connections to
external equipment may require torque different from 1 N · m, depending on
the connector type, material, and manufacturer.
10. Power on the PXI Express chassis and controller system.
11. Verify that the ACCESS LED is illuminated on all modules. If an LED is not illuminated,
refer to the Troubleshooting section of this document.

Direct Connections to the NI 5673E
The NI 5673E is a precision RF instrument that is sensitive to ESD and transients. Ensure you
take the following precautions when making direct connections to the NI 5673E to avoid
damaging the device.
Note Do not apply external signals to the NI 5673E. Applying external signals may
cause damage.

• Ensure you are properly grounded when manipulating cables or antennas connected to the
NI 5673E.
• If you are using noninsulated devices, such as a noninsulated RF antenna, ensure the
devices are maintained in a static-free environment.
• If you are using an active device, such as a preamplifier or switch routed to the NI 5673E,
ensure no signal transients are sourced to the NI 5673E.
NI 5611 I/Q Modulator Module
The NI PXIe-5611 I/Q modulator module contains eight connectors and two multicolor LEDs.
